IL-96M, What Happened To It?

Thu Dec 23, 2004 7:11 am

Hey guys I was just wondering what ever happened to the IL-96M?

This aircraft is supposedly equipped with western avionics and PW engines.

Are there currently any orders of it by Russian airline's?

Where is the prototype right now? There are photos of the aircraft here on A.Net but they are a bit old.

The latest picture of it shows it to be powered with PS-90's, what's up with that?

Good question... sure is an awesome looking plane. But doesn't Aeroflot fly them today already?

AS FAR AS I CAN REMEMBER,
during the late 90's the US EXIM bank withdraw financing for the project due to Russian currency meltdown and poor economic performance.
So the American partners had no choice but to withdraw form the project.
However, Illusian finished the project Russian Engine and Digital avionics.

Maybe someone else can provide more details, as I don’t' have them.

If I'm not mistaken, the EXIM bank withdrew from the project because Boeing was fearing that the IL-96M/T could be dangerous for them. (Imagine a long hauler, with 4 PW and Rockwell Collins for a price the half of a brand new B777...)

So, the Russians have put PS-90 instead of PW2337, and have replace the avionics with russian made one.

And SU which had ordered 17 IL-96M and 3 IL-96T have been released from his obligations in 1999 or 2000. Transaero had 6 on order, and they have also been released from their obligation.

Ilyushin is now marketing the IL-96M/T as the IL-96-400M and T, but as far as I know none have been delivered yet. I think that Atlant Soyuz have some on order but due to financing troubles, they won't have it soon.

Regards,

Sterne

If not Mistaken I've seen IL96 of Aeroflot operating to Mumbai some time last year.

It would be nice though to actually see how the IL96M compared with the A340 and B777 with regards to Pax comfort, reliability, and of course PERFORMANCE.

Hopefully one day this might come true. Maybe RR would be interested in powering that aircraft with some trents. Just imagine how sweet it would look.

That would be an IL-96-300, the original IL-96 model. Its shorter than the M/400 and is in service with several CIS airlines including Aeroflot.

This summer I was standing at the end of the runway in MIR when an IL-96 landed, what a great sight! This was a Russian charter. The staff at MIR told me the hated the A/C due to all the noise, I LOVE it!

Are the PS-90's Stage 3 or 4 compliant?

There were several project with PW engines - including even a twin jet based on IL-96. All of them are pretty much gone now.

"Classic" (PS-90) powered version is still produced, this is probably, the most famous one: https://www.airliners.net/open.file/373677/M/ Two out of Aeroflot's cancelled order will go to Cubana.

Transaero never looked at IL-96, they were required to order TU-204 in exchange for tax-free import of their 737's. 3 (I believe) are on order but they are not new planes and they are powered by PW. But that's another story.

PS90's are Stage 3 compliant.

As far as competition... Well, the fuel efficiency is not there and it requires at least 3 person cockpit crew. Plus lack of maintenance facilities around the world.

As far as passenger comfort - the legroom is good (partially because -300 are somewhat underpowered and they can not put more seats in) - but no luggage bins above center row. Entertainment system is bad in SU version (no personal audio), somewhat better in Krasair (later) planes.

Existing aircrafts are actively used on SU flights to Asia, Domodedovo Airlines flights to Russian Far East.

Great info SFO2SVO.

So are you saying that the IL-96 ordered by Transaero WILL be powered by PW engines. Are you sure about this?

It really is a great aeroplane. Visited one of Pulkovo once sitting on the tarmac at EHBK, on a charter flight from St Petersburg. What a massive machine!

No, sorry, I meant that Transaero never intended to acquire IL-96 as someone mentioned in the post above. They are required to get TU-204 and those will be powered by western engines. They are Tu-204-120 from Cairo.
There are a lot of rumors around the deal. Transaero is positioning itself as western-only fleet airline. 204's do not exactly fit the picture.

Look here: http://www.transaero.ru/english/about/news.html?news_id=112
(their English is even worse then my  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Back to subject, AFAIK IL-96s are used by
Aeroflot
Rossija
Domodedovo
KrasAir
...anybody else?

I think this aircraft has just one problem: The western discrimination for russian aircraft. This plane, with economics, range, etc... is a good competitor of the 777 or A340, but the bad fame westerners have of russian planes limit the aircraft only for eastern airlines. It is a shame, as there are really good russian aircraft around.

If not Mistaken I've seen IL96 of Aeroflot operating to Mumbai some time last year.

Aeroflot has been flying exclusively the Tu-214 to Mumbai since they restarted the route last year. The IL-96s that you see here may have been DEL diversions due fog (quite a few of those last year) or the VIP IL-96s that periodically transit through here.

Funny, I was going to ask this question once and eventually forgot.

The closest thing to the IL-86, which is one of my favorite airliners visually speaking, even though I've never seen one.

However after after 10 years of it's appearance at the Farnborough air show and with all the new versions of airliners from A & B coming out, I doubt we will see the IL-96M/400 anytime soon in passenger service. Regardless, I'd love to see this plane, at least as a freighter. It's a beautiful machine in my opinion, more visually attractive to me than both the A340 and 777.

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays

 Smile

Atlant Soyuz is using the RA-96002.

And I'm sorry but Transaero had ordered 4 IL-96M in 2001 and 2 in 2002...soon after the order have been cancelled because of the program's termination.

About Transaero Tu-204 they'll be leased from Air Cairo, as you correctly pointed out, but on the other hand Transaero have placed an order for Tu-204-300. And nearly everybody is sure that they'll never take delivery of them, they'll just use the "order" as a way of obtaining more aircrafts from either A or B.

@Levent: Pulkovo is not using any IL-96, they're using IL-86.

Sterne

You´re totally right, Sterne, I just got carried away by this awesome aircraft! I took a series of pictures of the plane and its crew, they were very nice to talk with.

What airports outside Russia are getting IL-86s nowadays? Where is Pulkovo flying theirs to?
