There were several project with PW
engines - including even a twin jet based on IL
-96. All of them are pretty much gone now.
-90) powered version is still produced, this is probably, the most famous one: https://www.airliners.net/open.file/373677/M/ Two out of Aeroflot's cancelled order will go to Cubana.
Transaero never looked at IL
-96, they were required to order TU
-204 in exchange for tax-free import of their 737's. 3 (I believe) are on order but they are not new planes and they are powered by PW
. But that's another story.
PS90's are Stage 3 compliant.
As far as competition... Well, the fuel efficiency is not there and it requires at least 3 person cockpit crew. Plus lack of maintenance facilities around the world.
As far as passenger comfort - the legroom is good (partially because -300 are somewhat underpowered and they can not put more seats in) - but no luggage bins above center row. Entertainment system is bad in SU
version (no personal audio), somewhat better in Krasair (later) planes.
Existing aircrafts are actively used on SU
flights to Asia, Domodedovo Airlines flights to Russian Far East.
