Christmas Eve Travels- I Can't Believe we're doing this

Thu Dec 23, 2004 11:39 pm

Not that I am complaining, but we are going to Miami to visit family and celebrate my Grandmothers 90th birthday on the 26th.

So that means we are flying out of JFK tomorrow at 930 AM (YEOOOOCH!)

We are planning to arrive at the airport at 7:00am. Think thats early enough?

Is anyone else flying out on 12/24? What time are you leaving? Are you as scared shit of what to expect as I am?

Christmas Eve Travels- I Can't Believe we're doing this

Thu Dec 23, 2004 11:44 pm

Yep, I'd be scared witless as well. Christmas Day on a Saturday is the worst possible day of the week, as most people will work the week and travel on Christmas Eve.

Me, I'm getting up early Christmas Day and driving to my brother's house, a good 3 hours away but you can bet your life that time would more than double tomorrow night. M4 and M25 anyone (the latter being the London orbital motorway, otherwise known as the longest car park / parking lot in the world)?

Christmas Eve Travels- I Can't Believe we're doing this

Thu Dec 23, 2004 11:56 pm

I flew PAL Manila-Cebu today - total disaster. Manila traffic was awful, people were waiting outside the terminal as it was too full, PAL flights were overbooked and generally all delayed. Luckily I had booked J, otherwise I'd have waited an hour at check-in and missed my flight.

I find christmas day is a great day to fly...espically the morning...our flight from FLL-DFW was virtually empty in 1995...but our DFW-LAS continuation was full of wealthy oil tycoons who needed to bust some money at the casinos...but it still was a smooth connection. My only complaint was that we had to get off at DFW even though it was the same flight #

Actually today is the heaviest day of the X-mas season. ATL is expecting a new record number of pax today as well as Monday. A group of us here at WO and our families will be spending X-mas eve up at ATL seeing off 300 returning servicemen going back to Iraq following their 2 week leave. It's bad enough having to return, but even worse that it's Christmas Eve. The good thing is that we have another 300 coming home tomorrow morning. What a great Christmas present for their families.

Flying B6 BUF-JFK this Christmas day hope it's just as nice. Big grin

Good luck! I'll be leaving next Tuesday for Jackson Hole, Wyoming to go skiing. My dad, my brother, and I are flying Delta from ATL to DFW to SLC to JAC. Our flight to DFW leaves ATL at about 7:15 a.m. What time do you think we need to get to the airport?

Get to the airport....any airport....VERY early. At Dulles, TSA is overwhelmed this week...both screening people and screening baggage in the bag rooms. TSA is causing departure delays due to the inability to process people and baggage. Plus, it's a bunch of amateurs traveling this week....just like those people who never go out to dinner/drink except on New Years Eve. They have no clue how to prepare to go through screening. "Yes, lady, you do have to remove your metal braclets!" "Yes, obnoxious teenage boy, you do have to take off your I-pod and put it through the machine!" "No, sir, your steamer trunk will not fit in the overhead storage!" "Well, sir, you only fly with us once a year, what makes you think you should be upgraded?"

Here in Spain (at least at Valencia airport) I actually found it to be very quiet around Christmas. We flew to Holland on the 24th with the last two Xmasses, last year Iberia even cancelled the MAD flight and rebooked us via BCN to AMS because there hardly were any pax. This year I´m flying to MXP and IST on the 26th.

I leave at 930 so we planned to be there at 7AM but we are still panicked it might be cutting it close.

I would be there at 630am...just to make sure !!!

I don't know about JFK AA Operations but living in MIAA (ha!) on a regular basis if an AA flight leaves at 8am, the terminal is jammed packed since 6am!

On your return flight, I would suggest being at MIAA the earliest you can. With AA's 200+ flights out of MIA and combining the Holiday Season...you are sure to get some traffic!

Good Luck and Hope you have a nice time in my hometown.

Ah, now this is why I like having a small airport to go to to catch flights. My flight to IAH tomorrow morning is showing half full at best. I just hope the weather cooperates, as well as maintenance, crews, ect (the flight I am on tomorrow IAH-EWR is 7 hours delayed today, if this was tomorrow I would be stuck in EWR overnight as I would have missed the last flight home).

I find it quite amazing that the difference between Christmas eve and New Years eve travel is so drastic, every time I have flown on New Years eve most of my flights have been almost empty, yet Christmas eve is always full.

Wd: time to bring out my annual writing of the New Years story:

same travel time as my above post (1995-1996)
DFW-FLL....flight was completely full and boarded ready to go on time to FLL...we'd arrive around 11pm on New Years Eve...sitting in the bulkhead I lean over (I was about 8 years old, so I wasn't into planes yet and I was sitting in the aisle) and notice no crew. 10 minutes later, the FA announces no crew, so we deboard and reboard about an hour later (crew was stuck in ATL)...Finally we are off and we celebrate the New Year somewhere over the Gulf of Mexico...with Champagine (FREE) and for the kids Ginger-Ale...now you think an airline would do that nowadays?

I too am flying on 12/24. I'll have to leave my home by 5:15 to get to LAX by 6:00 for an 8:00 AM flight. Call me a masochist. I'm just glad its United First, hopefully that will take away some of the pain.

Good Luck to all those traveling this weekend, and Merry Christmas to all those who celebrate it!

I fly Xmas eve often, and I am doing it tomorrow too. Not usually an issue out of PHL, but JFK is always a hassle no matter what the day. 7am should be fine, it will give you plenty of time to get through those ginormous security lines. I strongly recommend online checkin if possible.

Oh geez...

Im worried too, my sister is flying tomorrow ( the 24th )

LAX-MSP, Northwest
MSP-FNT, Northwest

Her flight leaves around noon... I told her to get to the airport at no later than 7am.

After watching that show " Airline "... i remember the Thanksgiving episode, where they said on Thanksgiving, there was a 1-2 mile line outside Terminal 1, and thats ONLY for curbside checkin! Then inside theres another 1-2 mile line for security.

I was out at DEN yesterday picking up some family. The United checkin line went in a giant loop around the terminal! As well as the other carriers too!

I know one flight that will not be delayed, no lines for security, early check-in no tnecessary, no weather delays even if the weather is bad, "upgrade" to a nice wide seat is always available, no ATC delays, loads of food ( can't be UA), luggage hold is full, brings delight to many all over, dress code strictly enforced - Have a good flight Santa! We'll be watching you on flight tracker!!!

Merry Christmas to all!

Because of the snow storms that hit Indiana, I am now flying to PIT from IND rather than drive across on I 70.

Thank God for ATA and affordable last minute fares. I fly from IND to MDW then from MDW to PIT.

Hopefully Christmas Eve travel won't be as bad as the day before Thanksgiving.

I am flying tomorrow from O'Hare to Hartford, CT on United flight # 150 that leaves at 10 fourtysomething am I guess if I will be at the airport one hour before departure I should be fine. Besides I have been taking this trip for past few years each Xmas and it has been really OK. I guess there is no reason to panic about all that holiday travel as long as the weather is fine and everyone takes it easy.

My sister is flying home tomorrow morning at 6:30 AM. But she's in Connecticut, and BDL can't be that bad.

US Airways sure is in dire straits: her ticket was only $219, even though she bought it two days before travel last week.

Very well said! Christmas and New Years bring out the worst in people. Its almost comical. They scream and bitch at us because the weather in Ohio sucks with cold and 16 inches of snow. Whatever your plans factor in at least an extra 30 to 60 minutes in leaving earlier. The law is out there especially around BWI and will not hesitate to pull you over. You can't blame the police; in this age of heightened security, road rage and air rage. Then you have the folks in their oversized gas hog SUV's who think they own the road but can't drive do what they want; cutting you off getting lost, doing 30 in the fast lane and 80 in the exit lanes. Up at the terminal, they will park their ugly monuments to conspicuous consumption and inflated monthly payments blocking three out of four lanes until the LEO's persuade them to get to stepping. Inside the terminal, passengers still have not realized to have their names on their overpacked precious luggage. This takes up time and space. If you call or check online and your flight is delayed, that does not mean this is an invitation to waltz into the airport at your convenience. Still arrive like your flight is departing on time because, at the last minute the plane could be fixed, ATC is lifted or the inbound flight put some pep in their step and arrived early; guess what? If they can do it, the flight will depart early. And no, we are not going to put you up at the Ritz, put you on another airline first class because you decided to exit the terminal and inhale some cancer sticks and yap on your cell phone. And no, going to Taco Bell does not constitute or justify compensation because the plane took off without you. Enjoy that Chaloopa and don't throw a hissy fit!
Just exercise common sense and you will get through the holiday flying experience. Just be prepared for a lot of people acting borderline retarded in the name of the holiday spirit.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

In 2002, I flew LGB-JFK on B6, before they began flying out of SAN. It was on X-mas eve, and I don't remember it being too bad. Of course, the next day, when I was there in NY, it snowed about three feet, so I came just in time!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Well, I am here in Miami, what a day it was.

Got to LGA at 645 for a 930 Flight. We danced right by all the folks in line with luggage to check-in because we sent most of our luggage down to MIA with my parents who drove.

So we only had the carry on luggage. We sat for breakfast in the airport but before security (terminal 8) and then got on line for security, Only took about 8 minutes to go through security and it was relatively quick and efficient, most passengers weren't fussing. Heard one guy yell at his wife to shut up. Pleasant.

Got to the gate and sat for about 2 hours. Listened to 3 people screaming at a GA becasue they didnt get on their flight. They said they were taken off one line and put on another which caused them delay in getting to the gate, thus rightfully blaming the AA employee who took them off the line. It was a 730 flight and this gal as their at 430.

We boarded our A300 and sat in the 2nd to last row. This jappy gal gets in the seat behind us, yelling on the phone to someone that she'll never fly AA again, it was horrible, yada yada yada.

Once she hung up, I just looked at her and said, "what? Are you kidding me? You mean to say that if you flew Delta, Continental or Jetblue right now, you'd be saying something different? What did you expect on 12/24?!"

Its amazing.

Well, I flew on 12/24 and survived....it was seamless. the recipe? got there almost 3 hours early, only had carry-on luggage and laughed at the idiocy that surrounded us.

I flew last year on Christmas Eve out to Hawaii. Luckily, we entered the system in Key West, FL, so it was relatively hassle-free except for some strict screeners.

Surprisingly, my first flight up to Orlando (ERJ-135) was only about half full, but then the B764 to ATL and B763ER to HNL were overbooked. The ATL-HNL leg was delayed in getting off the ground by about 40 minutes, but that was primarily due to congestion.

Overall, not too bad of an experience. However, I will make sure that future Christmas Eve travels, if any, start at a smaller station than, say, ATL.

Mirrodie-I assume you mean JFK, not LGA. LGA does not have a Terminal 8, and additionally, LGA does not see the Airbus A-300.
