Interesting Fact About Oil

Sat Jan 15, 2005 12:16 pm

1 Barrel ( = 40 gallons) is equal to only 4.5 gallons of jetfuel. So imagine how many barrels have to be imported to fill your Dash 8 ??? Or, G-d, your Airbus A-380 !!!!  Nuts

Kaddyuk,

I think that JeffLAS means that it takes 40 gallons of crude oil to create 4.5 gallons of jet fuel.

He's saying that, from 40 gallons of crude oil, you get only 4.5 gallons of Jet-A...

perhaps only 4.5 gallons of jet fuel can be extracted from a single barrel of crude when it's refined?

That's a lot of shit we pump into the air every flight. 40 gallons of gas = ~ 260 pounds of particles thrown into the air......

Someday we do better.

I should have explained that you are only able to refine 4.5 gallons of jet fuel for every 40 gallon drum. Sorry for not being more clear.

It's not exactly like cooking down a barrel of oil into 4.5 gal of jet fuel. Out of any given barrel of oil you can produce the 4.5 gal of jet A plus additional products such as diesel, petrolium distillates, products destined for plastic and composite materials as well as the all important waxes for your red delicious apples...

And it's not 260 pounds of particles. Much fewer than that, when you account for all of the water and CO2 produced by running the engine.

Actually most U.S. carriers are paying between $1.25 and $2.15 a gallon right now. And figure that one gallon of Jet-A weighs roughly 6.71 pounds.

I can't speak on how much Jet-A comes from a barrel of crude. But I would find it hard to believe that you can only get 4.5 gallons out of a barrel and still only pay $2 a gallon!
