DTW Tower Closed?

Sun Jan 23, 2005 5:37 am

Detroit Tower is currently closed, ATIS says they'll be reopening at a temporary location. Anyone know what's up?

Someone used the wrong cleaning product up there and it made everyone sick.

I think someone posted before that people were getting sick because of a cleaning agent, and they had to evacuate the tower.

CMH controllers were explaining it as: doing mold removal and overcome with fumes.

They were doing something with chemicals in the elevator shafts and the fumes were making people sick. Thus, the tower has been evacuated and NW is nearing gridlock with the combination of snow and lack of ATC.

A Chautauqua just declared an emergency for smoke and sparks in the cockpit. They seem to be doing alright though. Trucks are standing by, however.

I was just watching local Detroit news and they mentioned that operations were moved to the old control tower (on top of the LC Smith terminal) until they could get rid of the fumes.....hard to believe that this was the main tower at DTW for so many years.
Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool.....

And about 2 hours after that Chauqautua a NW 757 declared an emergency with an engine out. Man DTW is bad luck today.
