Help Again, My 2nd Flight JFK-LAX Aug. 1970

Sun Feb 20, 2005 4:25 am

Ok, thanks to Alb222, I have found the aircraft and route I flew on my first flight as a kid, that was June 1970, LAX-DAL-ATL-JFK, on a DL DC-8-51, I need to hopefully find the return info if possible, From what my Dad says the return was non-stop and on a wide-body, from what I can tell the only wide-body in commercial service in Aug. 1970 was the 747, now I hope someone can help me fill in this very last blank for my data file on my travels. So my question is, who flew the 747 non-stop from JFK to LAX in Aug. 1970, I have been told probally only AA,UA or TW, and if anyone has flight times etc.. it would be very appreciated. I know we connected off a South African Airways flight from JNB via RIO. it was a 707.

Here's the link to my first posting...

The only thing I can tell you is that it was either TW or UA. AA did not use the 747 until September. TW was the first to fly the 747 transcon. My guess would be TW.

Hummm, any idea of where I could find the info on UA and TW 747 flight schedules from Aug. 1970? I guess that's then the missing piece, and then my data base will be done, complete with pictures, and exact a/c when possible and known.

Anyone with an OAG, that covers this time? That would be a cool, a complete archived OAG data base, I'd be in heaven.

Cearley says AA did start 747 service earlier in 1970, so probably AA and TW flew JFK-LAX nonstop in 8/70. UA started 747s around July, but he doesn't say whether they immediately flew JFK-LAX or not. FWIW I have a December OAG, and there may be a September in the library, if you don't hear from anyone else.

I stand corrected. Thanks Timz. Actually, AA started 747 transcon JFK-LAX service on March 2, 1970.

Just spoke with a friend, retired AA Capt. He said AA 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 were AA JFK-LAX transcon with Flt. 1 being a 747 departing JFK at 9AM arriving LAX 11:30AM. This is from memory and he cannot remember other 747 flights.

"Didn't Pan Am also run JFK>LAX?"

PA wasn't authorized for passenger services over domestic routes during this period. In fact, PA did not begin to fly U. S. domestic until after passage of the Airline Deregulation Act.

Re: LAX-JFK: Most likely you flew AA or TW. AA's first B747 was indeed 3/2/70, as Timz correctly pointed out. TW's first B747 service was introduced 3/18/70 (source-Cearley). UA's first B747 service LAX-JFK-LAX began 8/20/70 (source-UA's 7/1/70 sys. timetable)

Without digging out some old OAG's or schedules, Aaway has it right. I would bet the bank on TW,UA or AA. I dont think anyone else flew that route in the summer of 1970 with 747's.

"In fact, PA did not begin to fly U. S. domestic until after passage of the Airline Deregulation Act."

You mean they didn't carry domestic passengers. But they did have JFK-LAX 707s in 1970.

Best I can do on the old timetables:

1 July 1970 OAG shows AA 747s at 0900 and 1800 and a TW 747 at 1745.

14 Sept 1970 AA timetable shows 747s at 0900, 1200 and 1800.

1 Dec 1970 OAG shows the three AA 747s as above, TW 747s at 0900-1445-1545, and a UA 747 at 1200.

Chances are it was AA or TWA. PA in 1970 on the LAX-JFK route could not pick up pax at LAX on their way to JFK. Pax could only deplane at LAX and JFK . This flight I believe was part of the round the world flight PA1/ or 2.

We did connect straight from an Intl flight, not on PA, but on SA, would that have allowed us to possible make the connection onto PA from JFK-LAX? I know rules can be different for passengers arriving direct from foreign ports.

In any case, PA didn't fly the 747 JFK-LAX then.

As I recall PA's "round-the-world" flight only crossed the US for a year or two, around 1976.
