Becoming A Pilot
Hi, I am a ramper at the moment but would love to one day become a pilot. Is there any literature out there and/or anyone who can give me tips or guide me through the process, of getting certified. I currently have no flight experience and would greatly appreciate any help thank you. --NWairlnk07

You have several options. You can go to your local airport and start your training. You will need around 35 thousand for training. You can then become an intructor then join a regional airline. Or you can go to a Flight Academy where they have connections with airlines. Many people have reccomended ATP Academy. There is also MESA Pilot Development. These schools are around 20 thousand more than traditional training. Or you can go to the military but that requires commitement and it shouldn't be a spontaneous decision to join. Also get a degree because some flight schools require you to have a 2 year degree. But before you go into pilot land, take some intro flights to see if you really want to fly.

well, i thing i hate is that every airline requires experience, which most jobs require, anyways. How the hell are you gonna become a pilot if you didnt fly a plane that an airline requires you to fly. You, obviously, only have the training.

Yes I was always intent on going to school for aeuronautical science with a flight option but now I am reconsidering that choice. I still want to be a pilot, but I have always been intrested in I.T. and computer science. Since I have read recently how much the degree doesn't matter, I think I will go to school for computer science and get a masters degree and slowly build up my hours and get my liscences. Maybe use an I.T. job to help pay for the hours. Then once I have the hours and ratings... apply for a job.. And if it doesn't work out or I can't get a job right away I always have a computer science job to fall back onto. Does this sound like a good idea?

Jfkaua: Great choice. Your right about that you dont need a degree in aviation to become a pilot. But it is a hard road to get to the regionals. You need your ratings and dont forget about the medical. You need to be able to pass a FAA class one medical. Also if you take the civil way and just do the training at you FBO by rating at a time and have the computer job maybe you will be making $50,000 a year with your computer job, you also need to be a CFI to get hours so the computer job might have to be part time.
Well once you get your 1200-1500 hours and get into a regional flying anthing from a Dash-8 to CRJ-200 you will be lucky to make $26,000. I would do some PPL trianing and make sure you like flying. Also if buying a copy of FS9 and a joystick would not be a bad idea. I know a few people that say FS helps alot in getting your PPL.
ATP flight school is great and they have a great connection with Express Jet.
But if you work hard and keep on task on day you might be in the left seat of a 787 o 747 A340.

Airlines train you to fly their respective equipment. Very few pilots have any time in the types they're going to fly at the airline before they're hired.

WN requires that new pilots be type rated in the 737. Last time I looked at their website they said if you didn't have a type rating they would still hire you but you had something like 3 months to get one. That's has to cost thousands to be type rated in the 737.

HEY GNV! whatsup man??? You with 9E I assume? If so, you want to learn more, there are PLENTY of people right at your fingertips to talk to... all the crews all day man. Ask them how they did it and got there, plenty of good info there. Also, HUGE recommendation, avoid leaving the airlines at all costs... and work very very hard to keep good performance reviews, most airlines, ours included give preference in pilot hiring to internal applicants. If you need to take a break for flight training, I would search out some of our lil' company loop holes in Leave of Absence policy. I personally got all my ratings through ATP, loved them and very very fast.... 112 days after coming into the program already having my PPL SEL/MEL... I ended with my Comm SEL/MEL/Inst CFI/CFII/MEI.... WELL worth the money... and the time is great for takin a L.O.A. ; ) Anyways, if you wanna talk more, hit me up at work, send a "y msg" from your OO or TR to SHV's TRNW , address it to Chris, they'll get it to my box and we can talk more sometime...

WN is the exception to the rule, really.

Thanks everybody for the info. I have also been recommended to look up ATP. It seems to be one of the best flight schools out there.
