Sat Mar 19, 2005 6:23 am

There are some new A380 Pics

http://www.planepictures.net/netshow.php?id=314733&count=false

and

And is it me or have they moved the airline names at the front.

I like the second one, nicely porportioned. Someone mentioned it looked stubby a long while back, how now?

Still look stubby, I guess because the tail is large that it's out of proportion to the fuselage.

In my fluids class a few years ago we learned that sharpening the front of object reduces the drag by 50%, but that sharpening the back can cut the drag by up to 10 times. This object can be a fuselage, wing, engine or anything. I suppose the blunt appearance means that it is okay for A380.

I noticed the tail and agree, though it may be to counter the moment from the powerful outboard engines.

I believe the tail is so large because the fuselage is so stubby. More force is needed to turn the shorter airframe then the longer one. This is why the A318's tail is the biggest of the A32X family, the 736's tail is the biggest of the 737 family, and the 747SP's tail is the biggest of the 747 family.

And man, that is one cool looking airplane, it's a friggin beast! Can't wait to see it fly!

Great pictures. Of course I like them both but I find the first one in particular really neat because it is focussed on one part of the aircraft: the nose. It is the first completed A380 picture I see with so much detail.
I'm impressed.

I can't wait to see it fly, but I still can't get over how ugly that nose is. I know it was designed like that for many reasons, like reduced cockpit noise, but it lacks any grace or beauty.

I like both photos! Sure the plane may not be to graceful, but it is truly an aviation marvle.

I can't wait to see this thing fly and I hope to be flying on it as soon as possible! I can only dream of it in United colors! Ahhhhhh

i'm no A or B fan, i'll fly in whatever is scheduled, but that plane just looks totally disproportioned, looks so heavy too! and the nose, i thought Michael Jackson had problems with his nose, he's got no problems compared to this! it just looks out of place. as for seeing it fly, i'd love to, seems they gotta whole lotta plane sittin around doing sweet FA for a while now! seems there is a panel missing from the tail also?

Sorry dudes,

This aircraft is beautiful. That's all there is to it. I'm tired of people unable to adapt to new stuff saying it is less graceful than your average 767. It is a beauty.

BTW,
Funny how the "the A380 is ugly corner" is much less forceful than before the aircraft was painted!

I attended a seminar on the A380 conducted by Airbus itself. They displayed a video of the A380 from pusback till take off. The video was amazing. As good as watching a real recording. Looked absolutely terrific at take off.

I'm not infatuated with A or B here, as most are, and try not to be biased when looking at planes like the A380. Overall, the plane is pretty graceful, with the beautifully sloped wings, the double decks, and large engines. This will be made even better when the stretched version is rolled out. But can you seriously say that nose is not ugly? There is something seriously wrong with the look of it.  crazy

BTW I don't know what thread you are reading regarding the "ugly corner," since it seems most people here haven't had the most positive things to say about the plane's looks.

Naw, people have just accepted its ugliness and no longer feel the need to post it. You were also the first to say it was less graceful than a 767 too. I feel this plane would look a million times better with a new nose, but hey so would many other things in life. I have to echo the above, and say I can not wait to see it in person.

I expect the A380-900 -- if it's ever built -- will have more graceful proportions. Would that make it the second ugliest beast in the air?  Smile

Where is the beauty and grace of this thing??? It ain't there.......will this thing be cool too see......ya' bet, I'll be watching this beast land @ SFO  Big grin

The 747 has grace and beauty, it has symmetry, sleek curves and CLASS......this thing is just a big beast......."beast" and "king of the skies" and does NOT equal to "grace" and "beauty"!!

The Fedex decal is on the left of Etihad. You can't see it on the close-up. Virgin is not on the close-up either.

I have a suspicion that most of the perceived "ugliness" will soon be forgotten when people actually see this thing in the air. I suspect that for an aircraft of its size, it will carry extraordinary grace into the air, and the eye will be drawn to those wings of absolutely unmatched beauty instead of a bit of a wart on the nose.

Bit sexist, I guess, but I'll take an incredibly leggy model with a wart on the nose for my girl over a stubby old waitress any day (last bit not aimed at 747, by the way)...

An aircraft shape grows out of aerodynamic necessity - not purely aesthetic reasons. I dare say the A380 nose profile could have been "sharpened" by its designers. Then the "knockers" on here would have been happily complaining about cramped flightdecks, restricted views for the pilots, difficulty in getting the aircraft nose-in at the terminal etc etc etc....... SOME people (especially the armchair "experts") will always find SOMETHING to spout off about.

Anyone think that the resulting shape might been developed during wind-tunnel/computer model tests for a good reason? The initial "stubbiness" will soon disappear with later stretched versions - compare the short 'SP to the "normal" length 747 - come on, the 'SP WAS an ugly aeroplane!   . Also, as has already been mentioned, the graceful wing and tail profiles will greatly improve the general look on an everyday basis, other than on a straight side-on view (SO beloved by the less imaginative!)

Reflecting on my earlier post, the leggy model analogy doesn't really work, does it, unless you've watched the closing part of "Hey Dude, Where's My Car?"

Like the Alien, this model will need 555 grown men to satisfy her.........

The nose profile actually looks similar to that of a 777, but I don't see people complaining about that. I suppose once she is flying we can start to make more objective comments about her grace or lack of it. Can't wait to see it for real, especially in a good colour scheme (Virgin for example) and maybe the stretch version.

In a world where practically all new aircraft have the same boring appearance: two engines, single deck, it's GREAT to see something that really stands out. The A380 has a very dramatic look head on and will be a classic in years to come. People just aren't used to seeing a cockpit slung so low on such a large aircraft, but as time passes we'll get used to it. Something about it reminds me of the TriStar, which, IMO was THE classic airliner. The 747 was a classic in its day, but already it's looking dated -- after all, it was designed 40 years ago and the only thing that's changed its the stretched upper deck, and remember how people thought that looked peculiar compared to the old one? Now which is the one that looks odd? The stretched A380 will look better than the initial version, if it ever gets launched. It's great to have something that will really stand out at airports for a change

The A380 looks absolutely gorgeous in this photo. The complete Airbus livery on it really has made a big difference in its looks. Still not quite a looker like the 747, but nevertheless, it certainly looks fine to me.

What's the black-yellow rectangle in the first picture for (between the 5X and TG logos)? Are they going to place the explosives behind that area during the first flight? I heard it was going to be in the cargo deck.

In short, no. The problem you talk about was very small. Wasn't even worth worrying about. Just one of the usual things that get ironed out during testing.
