Crazy AA Fact

Sun Mar 20, 2005 3:06 pm

In the year 1987, AA saved $40,000 by eliminating one olive from each first class meal.

Yes! Wasn't that Bobby Crandell's idea?

Yeah, that and a tape recording of a ferocious barking dog for security on one of the Caribbean Islands instead of paying for the real thing. Good old Bob.

It wasn't R L Crandall's idea, it was an employee, an FA if I remember correctly. She noticed that when they went to clear the coach meals, most of them had the olives left. So she suggested to someone that they stop catering them. This was the genesis of the IdeAAs in AAction program, whereby employees could submit money saving ideas. The ideas were evaluated, and if implemented, the employee received AAchiever points, which could be traded in for everything from time off to free passes to cash. It was actually a great program, at least in the beginning, and some folks made some significant money off of it, while generating some pretty hefty savings for the company.

Wow! I think I've heard something like this before, its amazing how something so small can make a relatively big financial difference!

Cheers,
Ian.

If AA saved that much my eliminating the olives then why on earth don't McDonalds take away those stupid horrid gherkins from their hamburgers.

Most people I know hate them and throw them away. They could save quite a bit by not including them!

How much did AA miss out on by not charging $1 more for each ticket sold last year?

What ever it was, AA and every other damn air carrier made up for it with a fee for every damn thing else, so it's a moot point.

The way I heard it, Bob Crandall eliminated all olives from all the salads, at a savings of closer to 400,00. Not sure if that was per month or year or what. If you think about it. saving 40 thousand is nothing.
I have been flying AA for a long time and I have heard this story told many a time.

Shame that saving didn't work either. He should have looked at the big picture.

Had they not saved the $$ then, they may not have had the $$ to last as long as they have. Saving a penny on each trash bag adds up. Making use of ground power rather than the APU.......

Like Ben Franklin said: "A penny saved is a penny earned."

ok...off topic...but:

McDonalds uses dehydrated onions... they simply put the flakes in water, and then serve them on their burgers...a great way to keep weight down in the transport of foodstuffs...

...interesting, eh?

Two years ago on an AA flight from JFK-LAX, I was seated in J. I asked the FA like I always had for the herb/oyster crackers as the after takeoff snack. She informed me that they had eliminated them in favor of only serving heated mixed nuts without the choice of the crackers. It was said to be cost saving. It must work if one olive per plat did something...!

Saving is good, but not at the cost of pax. Why don't they start cutting the ridiculous salaries of upper management?! The more the airlines take away, the more pax start looking at other carriers.

The only thing ridiculous about the salaries of AA's management is how low it is. The sacrifices they make to keep AA afloat are way above and beyond the call of duty. When they bail out for greener pastures, AA's board will have to pony up with some serious bucks to replace Arpey and company.

I have a question a question:

-Was Arpey a good CEO?

This is not a retorical question, but i was wondering if he was like Carty(?).

Another crazy AA fact. They lost two airplanes on 9/11 and had to endure the subsequent fallout of the overhaul of the entire security system in the US, and are STILL flying. The magazine sucked, the pillows were dirty, I enjoyed the meals but will do without, and MRTC will be missed, but it made no sense.
They still have my business.

Ditto to that.

Arpey WAS NOT a good CEO. He IS a good CEO, he hasn't been fired or anything. I had no problems with Carty, except he made a very serious mistake in judgement, giving management bonuses during negotiations with the unions. I didn't even have a problem with Crandall, who was very much "ahead of his time".
Anyone who can keep an airline as large as AA still flying is OK by me. As I said before, they still have my business.

No more pillows: great. Now get rid of the blankets. I routinely throw both in the overhead bin to get rid of the clutter. As for meals, do you serve one to your passengers when you travel by car? It's a hangover from the good old days. On longer flights food needs to be provided, which should be cheap and good quality if paid for.

If you need a blanket of pillow, take your own with you. You could provide yourself with something actually comfortable.

Well if you add up AA and Eagle's total passengers for 2004, now if they charged a single $1.00 more, it would be a whopping eighty-seven million, two thousand, three hundred twenty five dollars of lost revenue (87,002,325.00).
Now $5.00 more would have netted them $435,011,625.00. I do not see why all airlines do not raise the fares $10.00 across the board, in the case of AA, that would be an extra billion dollars in gained revenue.

RE: Crazy AA Fact

Here is another fact:There is a reason why AA's planes are kept the way they are, in bare metal. Painting the aircraft costs money of course but it also adds a few hundred pounds of extra weight on the fuselage, which then adds to the total take-off weight of the aircraft. By keeping paint off, AA does not incur extra fuel cost of carrying extra hundred or so pounds of weight for each take off. Multiply the weight of paint on each aircraft times the number of aircraft in the AA fleet times the number of avg. take offs in a day, that gives you the amount of dead weight on which fuel is burned carting it around. Hence, AA have little incentive to paint the entire fuselage, as this will cost $$$ annually in extra fuel costs.
