Last UA Boeing 762 Flight 25 Mar05?

Wed Mar 23, 2005 4:13 pm

Hi !

I looked in the schedules for UA and cannot find any 767-200s (762) after 25Mar05. Looks like the last flight will be this Friday 25Mar05 as UA 947 IAD-LAX dep 1715 arr 2002.

Can anyone confirm this ?

I've had some nice flights on UA 762s and it's too bad that they are leaving the UA fleet.

No! This is the end of an era. I will really miss UA 762s. I remember my first flights on them in the 1980s and they were always well worth looking forward to as after I flew QF to LAX I'd connect onto UA to JFK but they only had First Class and Economy back then, yet I flew Business on QF and got a "free" upgrade to First on the U.S. Transcon leg as UA wouldn't put me in coach on a premium ticket. Didn't happen all the time but I preferred the 762 over the DC-10s they operated.

Although in the end they were beat up and worn down I'm sad to see them go. The 762's in UA livery were my favourite plane when I was a kid. I would stand at the fence at the customs building at JFK and watch them come in from LAX and SFO and always loved them so much. They served UA well. So long...

Inevitable but still sad. The launch 767 airline.

It's been maddening since UA allocated the 762 fleet to primarily the JFK-LAX/SFO routes (and a few others) for years. In the 80's, the 762 fleet was more widely used thru the UA network.

We used to get the UA 762 in YYZ operating YYZ-ORD on an occasional scheduled basis thru the 80's.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I have no idea about a fire-truck arch sendoff at IAD or upon arrival at LAX. I would hope so.

I'm sure UA will sweep the occasion under the rug as always. Never once have I seen them throw a going away party like DL did for the L10 and 727. We would only hear about a fleet retirement after the fact in one sentence at the end of the following day's Newsreal if we were lucky. It's not due to BK and their financial situation, they just never saw the occasion as one worth mentioning for some reason.

Yeah,it's too bad UA doesn't commemorate fleet retirements. I have a DL727 poster and a DL L1011 print.

I remember the end of the 742,DC-10,727,732 and soon the 762. I never got on a -200,just a few -300's .

There is only 1 B767-200 remaining in service with UA. N603UA.

The retirement of the B762 fleet actually coincides more with the implementation date of March 29, 2005 for N registresterd FAR-121 aircraft fitting of TAWS (Terrain Awareness and Warning System).

The B767-200 fleet was not modified with new avionics for this new standard.

Hey guys,

I beleive that UA still has two B762s is service - N603UA and N617UA, the latter of which I caught at IAD last Sunday. Flight UA946 (UA8144) will indeed be the last UA B762 arrival at IAD, but according to the flightplans, UA will be operating the same aircraft on the LAX-BOS run the next day as UA162! I beleive that the BOS-LAX flight on Mar. 26 will be the final scheduled UA B762 flight.

The two aircraft will probably be ferried to VCV shortly afterwards, but again, I can not confirm this....try to catch them while you can!

Regards,
-Omar S.

Nope as of today, N603UA is the only remaining 762 in service with UA, N617UA was pulled as of 3/22.

The p.s. 757s have replaced the 762s on the JFK to SFO/LAX runs.

If the aircraft is indeed operating to BOS as suggested, one might think that UA could squeeze one more revenue flight out of 6203 by flying it back to LAX (closer to VCV) before the avionics deadline. But maybe there are some other aircraft repositioning issues.

The 762 has already been replaced by the 757 p.s. The 762 fleet for the last few years had been used mostly on flights between JFK to LAX or SFO with three class service. The remaining 762s were all company owned and were the oldest planes left in the fleet. It was decided to retire them rather than perform the extensive maintenance they would have needed to keep them flying.

Did the 762s ever fly to Europe? I flew UA 767s whem my mother and I did a two month exploration of Europe when I was 17. Then 4 months later when I transferred to a boarding school on the east coast I flew ORD-BOS on a 767.

Memorable planes for memorable times in my life.

I think it won't be long till we see many 767s leaving the skies.

Neil, I can remember one time as a kid in the 80s seeing two 767-200s taxi past one another. I actually have a photo of it somewhere. Ah those were the days of widebodies on transborder runs.

Yes when UA began Europe services in 1990 to CDG and FRA, the B767-200 was intially used.
About half the 767-200 fleet was upgraded to ETOPS standards for the routes

I'm finding quite a few 767-200 runs over the few days afterwards:

3/26/05
UA162 LAX-BOS, 8:30A-4:50P
UA181 BOS-SFO, 5:50P-9:22P
UA178 SFO-BOS, 10:30P-6:55A+1, plane goes in for mx at that point

3/27/05
UA169 BOS-LAX, 6:15P-9:38P, plane RON's there

3/28/05
UA946 LAX-IAD, 7:40A-3:28P
UA947 IAD-LAX, 5:15P-8:02P
UA991 LAX-SFO, 9:15P-10:35P

Sadly, that appears to be the end of the line...

It is a very sad day when they will be all gone. I remember how excited I was to learn of the new service UA would institute on their transcons, but now that the 200's are gone, I'm sad. Almost flew on one from ORD-LAX in Feb, but it didn't work out. Now I really wish it had.

I have flown many a mile on the UA 762s back and forth between the west coast and JFK/IAD. The F class service between JFK/SFO and LAX was the best F class service in the USA at that time (1994-2000) and my last flight across the USA was in C class on a UA 762 from JFK to SFO. Again, the international service on the domestic transcon. In fact, to commemorate the nearly 100,000 miles I flew on the route, I purchased a pair of F class seats from a 762 and they grace my home office. If I want to take a nap in the middle of the day, I can. Its a nice memory of all the trips I have taken on United when things were good and F class was F class the way it should be.

It is sad to see the 762s go, however, they have served United well and hopefully, United will find a good home for them and not chop them up for scrap.
That would be truly sad.

Thanks SHUPirate1 for finding more flights and for everyone for the tribute.

UA also flew the 762s to BRU from IAD and even nonstop MIA-GIG for a while. They also flew LGB-ORD (!!) in the late 1980s as well.

My last flight on a United Airlines Boeing 767-200 was on N608UA on 21Jul03 operating as UA 196 LAX-IAD.

I can indeed verify that SHUPirate1's schedule is correct. The last plane remaining is N603UA, I flew in it on January 7th from SFO to JFK as flight 8. N617UA was parked on 3/22, I took that plane as flight 9 JFK-SFO, definitely one of my best ever flights.

This is official - the last United 762 flight is UA 991 LAX-SFO on March 29th. I might try to get on it. I am, however prety certain that I am getting on flight 181 BOS-SFO. That's the ultimate transcon in United system. Expect a trip report and maybe a cockpit shot. It's definitely sad to see these go and I wish I could have flown more on them. Nonetheless, we all must go forward.

Looking forward to my final 762 flight(s).

Alex.

Perhaps you meant March 28th consistent w/ SHUPirate1's post ? If (as Laxintl said) the retirement is TAWS related, 6203 is not TAWS equipped, and TAWS is mandated from March 29th....

[EDIT: Ooops. March 29th is a legal day...sorry about that]

....no person may operate a turbine-powered U.S.-registered airplane configured with six or more passenger seats, excluding any pilot seat, after March 29, 2005, unless that airplane is equipped with an approved terrain awareness and warning system....

So N617UA is gone - sad. We flew 617 on UA1295 DEN-LAX on Oct. 14, '04. It was a substitution for a 767-300. We'd upgraded and were handed C boarding passes instead of F (2-class 763 was scheduled) so I knew something was up - I was expecting a 763 (3-class) at the gate. Surprise - it was a 762! Most folks would have been bummed at the "downgrade" but it was nice to have a 762 one last time.

I hope they give it a sendoff at SFO, it definately deserves the recognition. But, they are expensive to operate and maintain, and UA will benefit in the long run by retiring them.

The 767-200s are definitely vanishing. For now SFO has AA, AC, and DL operating the 767-200s in. Air Canada once a day as well as Delta. American may be a bit more frequent. So sad to see these birds go away.

They were sure a novel aircraft when they first started flying back 20+ years ago.

I think the 762s are being highly overated here, as of right now they really are bad planes.
- Outdated seats in all cabins
- Miserable seat pitch in J
- No E+
- One movie screen for each cabin, most of which are poor at best
- Ratty interiors
- Failing IFE

However, Seats 10J, 11J and 10A in J shall surely be missed.

Let's also not forget N612UA that was hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center on 9Sep01..... crying

It's the only UA 767-200 lost.

On a happier note, I flew on:

N601UA
N602UA
N603UA
N604UA
N605UA
N608UA
N617UA
N620UA

I agree that cabin of UA's 762s are lacking in my respects. I prefer the 762 over the 763 because it's more intimate and yet a widebody.

Anyone know if AA is planning a totaly phaseout their 762 fleet?

I think American will continue to fly them for a while. A dozen or so are already parked in the desert and I don't think any of those will ever return to service, those are there should another 767-200 operator need spare parts.
American is now left with at the most 16 B767-200 Series aircraft, all of which are ER versions, and are seen only on the daily transcons JFK-LAX-JFK and JFK-SFO-JFK runs. Those are not as old as United's first 767-200, the 200ER's date from the late 80's.
So yes, sooner or later, American will completely phase out the 767-200 fleet, but not right now. When? I would say early next decade, however you never know what the economy may be in years to come. Future will tell.
It would be great if one of them ends up at a museum.

Just got back from my daytrip, which included a transcon 762 ride. It was UA 181 from BOS to SFO. Seat 1F, First Class, great ride. Pictures and trip report are coming.

N603UA made it back to LAX this evening. Spending its last night in LA before heading off to IAD in the morning on UA946.

On the subject of UA 762s, I flew back to LIH (Lihue, Kauai, HI) from LAS yesterday (3/26/05) and upon approaching the gate at LIH, I noticed a UA 762 parked at gate 9 next to a 752 parked at gate 10. Looks like UA made a substitution for either flight 30 to LAX or 74 to SFO. Pretty neat to see a 767 at LIH as UA and AA normally use 752s for the LIH runs.

Your eyes must be deceiving you. It was a B767-300 in reality. Operated in as UA75 from SFO and turned around as UA30 to LAX.

UA 946 (callsign "United 8144") scheduled to arrive IAD 15:20 local time, currently assigned gate D15. The weather near IAD is overcast + rain, awful light for photography.  Sad

Then it's going back to LAX, then to SFO at 9:15, then it'll overnight and depart for VCV at 9:00 and arrive to its resting place at 9:56 according to rotation.

End of an era for sure. I wish I had taken more 762 flights...
