It appears that Delta will be discontinuing their two B737-800 JFK-DEN flights next month.
Can anyone confirm this and specifiy why?
This will be at least the second time that they discontinue JFK-DEN. A few years ago, they operated a daily B757-200 flight.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Nuts. That was the only way I could get to SXM without staying over night somewhere. I'd fly Delta DEN-JFK on the red-eye and then American JFK-SXM on passes). The JetBlue flight arrives too late to catch the first American flight out in the morning.
Looks like the only red-eye option left to get to SXM from Denver is entirely on Delta DEN-ATL-SXM. That's going to be a $1200 airfare...

DL's loads were horrendous, as in hovering around the 40s-50s whereas B6's loads are consistently in the 80s. Combine that with an average fare hovering around $100 one way and DL was smart to get out quickly.

JetBlue does really great in this market and maybe this will inspire B6 to add a 3rd daily.

I highly doubt it since the loads are weaker and the fare is lower I think.

Because when I go to SXM I non-rev on American. There are no red-eye flights between Denver and Miami, so my only option was to buy a one way ticket on Delta DEN-JFK and get to SXM that way.

I'm surprised... I've taken that flight several times, and everytime I've taken it (I've taken it middle weekdays and weekends) the plane has been pretty full... Granted I don't take the flight every day, and I'm sure the loads are different each day.
Sad to hear. I was just on the flight Friday and there were maybe a handful of free-seats. I wonder why JetBlue does so much better, considering they leave an hour later (1AM in Denver (not really an intl airport) is DEAD) and their prices aren't much if even cheaper than DL.
I usually get the DL Roundtrips (DEN-JFK and then usually LGA-connection-DEN) for $200-$250 tax included.

This would be the second destination DL drops after their major expansion at JFK (the first being SAN), but most other routes out of JFK are doing fine, and if both yields and loads are bad, it's the best to axe the route. Although I wonder if it wouldn't have made sense to keep a single flight on the route (redeye from DEN).

I recently took this flight (evening flight at 8.15pm) and the loadfactor was maybe 10% to 20%. No surprise for me that this flight has been axed.

Wasn't this one of the new cities that WAS NOT timed to make Europe conections? If that's the case--I'm sure it didn't help at all.

Even though the loads from JFK-DEN may have been poor, how were the DEN-JFK loads?
If anything keep the DEN-JFK flight, axe the JFK-DEN flight. DL's got several a/c lying around DEN at night. Granted it would take some work planning aircraft rotation to minimize the void left by taking one a/c for the JFK flight, but its very feasible.,

At least DL could maybe change its times around and keep a red eye and move the other flight to a timing with European departures.

On the bright side, SLC will gain a red-eye flight to JFK in May using a 757. It will be upgraded to a 763 in June. This is in addition to the two other SLC-JFK flights.

Factoid: That is only the 2nd SLC redeye departure and 3rd or 4th redeye if you count the HNL and ANC arrival!

DL will have three red-eye departures from SLC. 1 to ATL, 1 to CVG, and one to JFK.
In the summer, red-eye arrivals will be 2 from ANC, 1 from HNL, 1 from OGG, and one from FAI.

Perhaps in the future Delta will give another attempt at JFK-DEN and time the flights better for connections to Europe.
jetBlue is now the only carrier providing JFK-DEN service operating twice daily. Hopefully they will add a 3rd daily soon...

What about UA? You're talking about Jet Blue and Delta, but UA has a hub in DEN.

DL used to do JFK-DEN to connect with int'l departures.
First a 763, then a 757, and I also remember a 72S on the route too

Low yield routes like DEN-JFK leave them to B6. Delta does not have the luxury to be loosing revenue in routes like that.

Domestic flights with service from LGA rarely ever perform well at JFK, the exception being Florida.
When given a choice business travelers will always choose EWR or LGA over JFK, hence the lack of business routes from JFK within 1,500 miles.

I don't doubt it because those flights don't compete with LGA, if you notice I said Business travelers will always choose EWR and LGA over JFK for flights 1,500 miles and under. Obviously California is farther than 1,500, so does not apply.
If there were no perimeter rule at LGA AA, UAL etc would be flying transcons from LGA instead of JFK. Look at Chicago, hourly service from LGA and one daily Regional Jet flight from JFK.

I only took the DL DEN-JFK flight once, to connect on to NCE - the flight timings for the morning departure were perfect for taking early evening departures on to Europe - would DL not be able to make money that way ? After all DEN has very few choices for travel to Europe.

Save Nice, Istanbul, Athens, Barcelona and Venice folks traveling DL would be better served connecting via ATL than JFK, how many people from Denver can there be traveling to Turkey or Athens each day. Colorado is not the most ethnically diverse State in the US, probably not too many Turkish or Greek enclaves in Fort Collins or Pueblo.

Or flying direct via BA and LH. For whatever reason DL has always had problems with DEN. Between FL, F9, UA, DL there is a lot of traffic going to ATL and the greater New York area.
