I've noticed a lot of air packages sent to/from Chicago actually are trucked to Rockford and then flown from there to the destination.

Does anyone have any idea of the extend of UPS operations at KRFD? I read somewhere they have between 20 and 35 daily departures. Are those numbers correct? Any info as to where their direct flights go?

I guess they don't like the crowds at ORD, although there is not much of one between 10pm and 4am, when I would imagine they mostly operate.

RFD has aprrox 24 flights going to multiple locations. RFD will be expanding with UPS entering the heavy airfreight market, THE RFD hub is in close proximity to the 2 million SF consolidation hub in Chicago.

Here at Cleveland we have a DC-8 go out every night to Rockford except on Friday, then the route is "flown" by a truck.

I think that would be fun to go watch...although it would surely garner a lot of attention from the police at that time of night.

Thanks for posting that list. Quite impressive. Is Rockford a sorting center for UPS? Or is a great deal of this traffic just bound for the Chicago area? It seems to be quite a few flights from most areas of the country (except SE)....but the Chicago Metro area is also huge. Does UPS also fly anything out of ORD? I know that Fed Ex has ops into ORD, but I cannot remember if I have ever seen a UPS bird at ORD. Finally, Tjwgrr, do you know any of the aircraft types that are operating the routes? Thanks again.  Smile

Thanks again!

Go to and click on Track A Flight. Click on Advanced Users and type in RFD. It will show you the flights and where they arrived from
and also the aircraft type. Yes UPS does serve ORD also.

That site is awesome. Thanks. I am surprised that there are so few 727-200F coming in. Does UPS have many more? Or are they retiring them too? I thought that the 727-100Fs were the main ones on the way out.

Apparently all of the 727-200f's have been retired, the 100's are next.
