Wunala Dreaming Showing Off Today?

Fri Mar 25, 2005 12:20 pm

The "Wunala Dreaming" (or "Big Red"), Qantas 747-400ER was flying around downtown Melbourne very low this morning dipping her wings in what appeared to be a gesture to enable passengers to get a great view of the city. We had rather low cloud around noon (MEL time) -- I would estimate 3,000 ft ceiling in the city and the 747 was well beneath the clouds.

I was walking down Clarendon Street and heard a low airplane and looked up to clearly see the huge red fuselage flying right up the street out of town (East). Then she turned (North) toward Saint Kilda Road and out towards the MCG. About ten minutes later she came from the South and did a very low pass to the west of downtown. She seemed to be buzzing all around downtown. The eerie thing was the image of the big jet so low with the city in the background and the hum of the big powerplants brought back images of a terrible day in September 2001. However, the beauty of that airplane zipping around town showing off quickly brought happier thoughts to mind!

Any one know what Qantas was doing??? Something for Good Friday? I would have loved to have been aboard!

Might have been a promotional shoot or something like that. I don't know if they would do that with a 3,000 foot ceiling, though.

Could it be a charity flight for needy kids? They do things like that sometimes, with crew, ATC and oil companies all "donating" thier services for free. For some reason the long easter weekend rings a bell for when it normally takes place.

It was the Qantas Good Friday Charity Flights to help raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital Victoria.

There were a couple of flights today. Jetstar had them too in QLD.

Thanks... I wish I had read the Qantas web site earlier! I can promise you those pasengers got a great ride for $99!

Some times when QFhas a special flight, like the Avalaon Air Show 747 transfer from SYD, they use an old 747-300. Today's customers got the flagship of the fleet. Would have been fun.

We see her in SIN quite often. SYD-SIN-LHR is one of her most frequent routes.

She also tends to do 'national events' like the Olympics, football games, etc. She is the flagship of our fleet, so it is only fitting that she should attend.

Its a bit like how BA used to use Concorde. Always went to the best events.

She has flown the route, but not with a lot of frequency as there is really no need to fly the 744ER to LHR when the 744 can already do that. You will see her in LAX every week. The ER was designed for the LAX-MEL

I had to pull my car over at about 1:30 to watch her fly straight over.... my guess is that she was at about 3000ft. It would have been a really good photo op but when you are on your way to work you don't expect to see a B744ER flying around southern Melbourne. I think these charity flights are a great idea. QF did a few of them this year I believe, and in other cities as well. I read on the DJ website that they had one as well. Not sure where it went though.

All the best to everyone for easter!

she's actually been on the LHR run now since early february, on wednesday she went to Joburg and has done Joburg quite a few times in the last few months, yesterday after the charity flight she operated QF 9 to Sin and Lhr, it's been close to 2 months since it was last in the US, seen alot at HKG, BKK, LHR, SIN currently, she also did 1 week out of Perth on the Per-Sin-Lhr service.

last time it was in the US was 2nd feb, operating JFK-LAX-SYD.

SYD to JNB??? Wow, I bet the passengers expecting no Skybeds for another year got a great surprise, as did the business passengers who would get a 1st class suite... as the JNB flights are sold as J&Y only.

I would imagine we'll see the ERs going to JNB a lot more when the A380s arrive to take some of the LAX routes.

Are you sure she hasn't been to the US in 2 months? I could have sworn I'd seen her as QF 93/94 (MEL-LAX r/t) more recently than that. I did ride her SYD-MEL a few months ago, I think a continuation from LHR-BKK, where she was connecting to SIN-LHR.

absolutely dead certain, you can sware til your blue but i have it here right in front of me, if she went to the US recently she's still be on that 93/94 run, it's been 2 months since it last went to the US, Syd-Jnb is often served by 3 class 744's and ER's and Wunala has done it on a number of occasions, as with other ER's.

Does JNB truelly not warrant a First Class cabin and service. Would have thought there was a demand for first class seats between these two major cities.

you'd be suprised at the premium loads out of Jnb, very good to say the least though it's not a normal thing to see a 3 class at Jnb.

SA006, i can give you heads up when it will be headed to Jnb, she was also there on 23 march.

I was wondering , will the other 744ERs fly to Europe and regional routes? It seems only OEJ flies there.

If only St Kilda Rd did not make a curve at the Shrine, VH-OEJ could land on this beautiful strip...  Cool
