Pilot Tries To Land On A Frozen Lake.....

Eh, it's not the smartest thing to do. I guess he didn't like to be in traffic.

I don't feel sorry for this idiot at all. The ice thickness around the Twin Cities this time of year isn't the greatest. Anyone from Minnesota should know this.

Thank God he is not a 744 pilot  Smile
If Continental had a hub at DFW with nonstop flights I would always fly them, unfortunantely good things take time.

Landing on ice works great accually, but the thing is it only works great when you land on ice thats thick enough to hold up yer airplane. And from what I hear I'm guessing that ice aint thick enough.

Actually it is very rountine for airplanes to land on this lake. Although looking at the color of the ice, it is obvious that it is probably getting a little thin to hold up an airplane.

The pilot is a recently laid off Northwest Airlines mechanic who was landing to visit his mother. One of the wheels of the plane hit a hole in the ice left by an ice fisherman and the plane became stuck in the ice. It was only after the plane was stuck that it began to break through the ice and sink.

Landing on a frozen lake is very common in more isolated regions of Canada. Frozen lakes can make great runways provided the ice is thick enough. Obviously it wasn't in this case.

Skyways in Sweden has been trying to open a scheduled service to land on a frozen lake using a Saab 340 or Fokker 50.

See last month it was about 15 degrees in Minneapolis, but seeing as how lately the highs have varied from 50 to 70 degrees, it doesnt sound like a smart idea to land on something that is still frozen

Even here in Grand Froks its been in the 60s

Backfire: Do you happen to know where this lake is?

Cheers

Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.

Hi Mats,

Yes - it's Lake Aresjon.

Having checked in the photo archive there's a picture of the Saab 340 demonstration flight performed last year:

Skyways have made some test landings in Åre during the last month.
But I'm not sure if they will be allowed to use the lake as an air station..

I have landed on frozen lakes before, both on wheels and skis. The operation definately goes more smoothly if you have some degree of local knowledge and and reasonable assure your self of the thickness of the ice.
