LGW - India / Maldives On 757

Tue Apr 05, 2005 8:47 am

HI THERE,

Just wondered if anyone could tell me what its like on a 757 from the UK - India / Maldives etc.

How economical is this for the airlines, wouldnt a 767 or equivalent be better. Not sure.

Hope someone can help me out or share their experiences flying longhaul on 757

Cheers

Hi,

I see that Astraeus have 189 seat 757 a/c that they use on the longer routes.

Can anyone tell me what the range difference (in hours) is between a fully loaded 233 seater and a 189 seater.

Many Thx

When BY started its services to Goa,India in mid-90s, they chose 757s for this destination.

Belair from Switzerland does send 757s from ZRH to GOA, with a stop in Sharjah though. The same might go for the DE and LT flights stated above.

Did 6+ hours on a CO 757 between EWR and LIM. No problems - no claustraphobia, trolley use was kept to a minimum (keeping the aisles clear), everything ok. I think the Maldives are further, as is east India, but a few more hours shouldn't hurt - although would this be beyond the range of a 757 in one hop?

Astraeus tend to use the 73-700 with etops on their longer routes, including Aswan, Banjul, and Deer Lake in Canada.

Astraeus have moved some of their longer flights onto the 757. Malabo, Sharm, Aswan, and most of the Taba flights have moved over. Passengers are loving the 35 inch seat pitch and having IFE (which made for a very long flight on the 73G!!).We also operate 7/8 hour sectors on the Accra, Djibouti, and Freetown flights. Banjul stays on the 73G as loads are low on the MAN-BRS-BJL and MAN-BJL flights, as well as MAN not having 757s based there. Deer Lake will stay on the 73G for now as our 757s aren't ETOPS certified, and the loads are still building. Expect to see new long haul destinations this Summer and Winter 05/06, there are loads of rumours flying around at the mo!

I don't have any personal experience but my partner says its hell.
He flew from MAN to Mombasa on a Monarch 757 several years ago so I should imagine it had the full 235 seats (or about that). The journey was via LGW and stopped in Cairo to refuel. This resulted in a journey of approx. 12 hours. He said it was the worst trip of his life and has vowed never to set foot on a Monarch plane again. On the outbound trip only one meal was served ,and on the return there were not enough meals loaded so he didn't eat at all ! At the stop in Cairo the plane was parked at a remote stand and nobody was allowed to leave the aircraft . After 12 hours cooped up in a single aisle plane with very restricted legroom and inadequate catering I would think twice about it. As a footnote we have considered going to the Maldives on holiday, but when we looked into it you spend up to £2000 pounds each for your holiday ,staying in 4*+ hotels , but when you look at the details you are expected to endure a 10 hour flight on a charter flight - not for us!
Don't try to keep up with the Joneses - bring them down to your level !
