Airlines/Aircraft Used By Rock Stars

Tue Apr 12, 2005 1:34 pm

I just picked-up,"The Monterey Pop Festival"
3 set,DVD and saw how much Pacific Airlines 727 was shown.
Pacific Airlines merged later with (Hughes) AirWest.
I know this is a little old, but was Pacific the sponsor
of the festival? It seems it is the airline claim to fame.

Was there any other airline sponsors of rock festivals/rock stars?
I know Deep Purple had a purple jet(dc-9,I think) arriving at the first California Jam at ONT, and Led Zepplin's well covered jet.

So,as the topic suggests, how do/did the rock stars get around?

By the way, great and perhaps the best Jimi Hendrix concert.
And sadly,Otis Redding's (Great Concert) died shortly after.

Have fun!
Thanks

Metallica had a G-I that they rode around in for at least one tour. Beetles flew on American Flyers and Pan Am for their US tours.

The Backstreet boys used a B 763 with their tiles on the fuselage and IIRC The Stones visited Germany with a Privat Air B 752. And onece I got Jose Carreras, or was it Placido Domingo in a Cessna 525 CJII at DRS.

Going by captions on photos on this very site, it seems that Madonna travels with Netjets on a BBJ these days. Also, have read on another forum that Will Smith recently chartered a DC8 for a concert in South Africa, I believe.

For some years in the late 80's there was a Vickers Viscount stored at Tucson Muni with 'Rod Stewart' written on the nose, I believe it was used for one of his US tours.

Watch any programme about the 60's on TV and if they refer to the Beatles it is highly likely that they will show the group alighting from a Pan Am 707, one of the best known images of that era.

I followed a G-I flying into Salt Lake in the late 80's one night. It was bringing in Bon Jovi for a concert. The irony is that I was in a CV-240 that used to belong to REO Speedwagon in their early years. Small world.

CV-240 that belonged to REO Speedwagon? The "Flying Tuna"

I am surprised that none of the first 10 replies mentioned Elvis Presley and his Convair 880. He owned this airplane, not merely leased one, like most rock stars today.
His tail number was N880EP. TCB on the tail stands for Taking Care of Business. The plane was named Lisa Marie after his daughter. The plane is currently on permanent display in Memphis, TN.

I am old enough to have seen Elvis in concert in Wichita, KS in 1973. He used Hugh Hefner's Playboy DC-9 for that concert tour.

NSYNC typically chartered the NW 727 charter configurations when they had them.

Also seen onboard NW:
Prince
Jessica Simpson
Nick Lachey
Vanilla Ice
Bob Barker
etc.

I saw MC Hammer's chartered 727 offloading at Fort Worth Meachum field a few years back.

Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritche Vallens (spelling?) crashed in a V tail Beech Bonanza, shortly after takeoff.

Rickie Nelson's last flight was on a DC3.

I saw Chuck Berry flying on AA into Albany, NY.

Yes I have the album and saw the pics too. It was a DC-3. The CV-240 I was in used to have a coportate config inside. It flew them around while they were touring Australia. Also flew Queen Elizabeth while she was down there. Of course by the time I got there it was stripped down and we were hauling freight in it.

Jimmy Buffet, under the name "Strange Bird" currently owns and flies a HU-16 Albatross (N928J), a Caravan (N208JB), a Stearman (N43320) and a Falcon 900 (N908JB). He has also owned a Lake Renegade 250 and Citation and he almost got killed in the crash of his Grumman Widgeon.

Don't forget Led Zeppelin using a Boeing 720B nicknamed "The Starship" in the mid-1970's. In their movie "The Song Remains the Same" you see the band getting on the plane at the end of the film and the plane taking off.

I recall a former TV star and singer who toured in his own Jet Commander. The pilots would load the baggage compartment to the point of laying on their backs and kicking and pushing with their legs to get it all in. Then the star and band members would board. Finally, the pilots would load the aisle with the band's instruments. IIRC, the fuel was normally topped off, too (duct tape over the fuel caps). And then they would taxi to the longest runway for take off.
I often feared the worst, especially if they needed to get out (evacuate) in a hurry.
A few years later, the Jet Commander was traded for a DC-3, the heater caught fire, and all aboard perished.
A little bit louder now, a lil bit louder now...

Many years ago I was standing in the rose garden in front of the terminal at Berry Field in Nashville watching what little traffic there was. You can imagine how surprised I was to see a four engine jet land and taxi right in front of me. Two engines shut down, air stairs rolled out, and a long, black, Cadillac rolled out on the ramp. Out gets Elvis, runs up the stairs to the "Lisa Marie", turns and waves to me and a handful of others out there. Elvis used to come to Nashville pretty often for recording sessions and did so in his own plane. The hop from Memphis to Nashville must have passed quickly in a Convair 880.  wave

I still treasure the moment.

I saw the BEATLES (sp) arrive in MEM on the chartered American Flyers Electra Aug. 19, 1966. The Stones had a chartered 707 but I don't know with whom. I've got pictures of it from the '75 (?) wings over America tour and it was blue with a rainbow nose. Later I saw them on a Convair 580 form MEM to DAL.

He also owns a Cessna Golden Eagle, you see it in one of the more recent Iron Maiden videos (since he returned to Maiden.)
