A380 Starts Taxi Tests!

Wed Apr 13, 2005 3:06 am

Is this the first time the A380 has moved under it's own power? Truly a milestone if it is! Congrats Airbus!

Nice pic, and if dated April 9 it seems they're doing pretty well with the timeline. The look of the wings overcompensates for the clunky nose, especially on forward or near-forward angle views. And even the nose the airline livery designer guys will probably do something creative about as well so it won't be nearly as prominent in the overall visual presentation.

All in all it seems it's settling quite nicely into public consciousness thus far.

From this angle it looks pretty sharp in my opinion. Those wings have a very graceful look to them. Now if only we can see a picture with that nose lifting off the ground...

Have to disagree - that angle doesn't flatter it at all. The "forehead" is a little...much. It doesn't look as bad from the side, or head on, but it just looks...well, wrong from this angle. I guess it's just a matter of getting used to it - if we'd had the Internet back when the 747 was first launched, I'm sure some people would have remarked "wow, what a ugly NOSE! It's HUGE! It's the Barbra Streisand of airplanes!"

And it is a serious question - what goes in the windowless space at the front of the second deck? I seem to remember hearing something about crew rest area - is that correct? Or is this where SRB will put his "mile high" cabins?

The nose definitely looks weird, and perhaps especially from head-on.

However I think the fantastic-looking monster wings from a forward angle view more than makes up for it though. And just wait until the airline livery design guys get to putting cheat lines, (or bull horns or viking helmets or what-have-you) up front there so it won't be so obviously encephalopathic-bald and strange-looking as it is now on the first-flight prototype's minimal house paintjob seen by the World thus far.

I guess it's just a matter of getting used to it - if we'd had the Internet back when the 747 was first launched, I'm sure some people would have remarked "wow, what a ugly NOSE! It's HUGE! It's the Barbra Streisand of airplanes!"

Perhaps no need for the Internet then for all that, actually, because for the first ten years or so I for one sure remember hearing tons of people saying how weird the first 747s looked!

(and actually believe it or not Babs Streisand in those days was sort of a media sex-symbol so not a lot of public disparaging going on about her either, lol)

People will get used to the A380 though, just like with the 747 and --particularly with the Internet and other worldwide instant media and so much other stuff going on and filling people's lives and attention instead -- they will probably do so in way the heck less time as well. Like maybe a couple of years or so, tops.

You're right. And I remember a lot of questions about whether the 747 would actually be able to fly, and statements that no one would want to be jammed in with 400 others for a seven hour flight.

I thought the Sonic Cruiser looked pretty weird, but hey, I think a lot of stuff looks weird these days.

Telephones that are so small they dont reach from your ear to your mouth? Weird.

Posts on a.net when all people can find to say is that the A380 looks ugly? Weird.

It's amazing how much those wings are flexed downward... and that's probably with a light fuel load! Imagine how much they'll flex on rotation!

This is to be an awesome sounding airplane. On one of the TLC shows about the creation of the A380, they had some footage of the Trent 900 blade-off test. The beat part of the whole procedure was hearing that engine spool up. Talk about buzz-saw!

Can't wait to see (and hear) it fly!

MEA CULPA, MEA CULPA,
My observation concerning A380's corporeal attractiveness was deleted!

Sorry I'm not gushing like all the other schoolgirls on this thread about how wonderful/awsome/fantastic this aircraft looks and how much I can't wait to see it at XYZ airport in XX livery.

To stay on the topic of taxi tests, it seems apparent that the aircraft does function under its own power, and the struts haven't buckled under the weight of the beast.

I'd still like to know if anyone knows how all that space above and just behind the flight deck will be used.

Does anyone know?

When you look at an A343 from the front the engines look so unimpressive compared to the scale of the aircraft. In comparison the A350 looks overpowered... four engines of that size... wow. Nice picture.

It's too bad everyone (most everyone) in this forum has to be so negative in this forum. The A380, I believe will prove all the naysayers wrong and become an incredible aircraft. Yes, it is different but then again when the 747 was first introduced it also was totally something new. Time will tell alot.

Couldn't agree more, this is a great milestone. And very special thanks to the FFAS for bringing all their excellent pictures to us. They've done a better job of covering the A380 than Airbus!

But seriously on the topic, the A380 should be able to taxi with just 2 engines running. I notice the pic show's all 4 running. But I guess in this shot, all 4 could be idle.

If it can move under its own power, perhaps it's not too heavy after all.

Let's do the math on this.

A380 specs are as follows:

WEIGHT: 1,234,600 lbs. pax / 1,300,700 lbs. frt.

ENGINES: 4 each at 70,000 lbs. Total thrust: 280,000 lbs of thrust.

(Yes, I know, A.net specs call for 68,000 derated and future power to 84,000 listed on various websites.)

An-225 Mriya specs are as follows:

WEIGHT: 1,322,773 lbs.

(That is 22,073 lbs. HEAVIER then the freight version of the A380.)

ENGINES: 6 each at 51,590 lbs. Total thrust: 309,540 lbs. of thrust.

(More thrust then the initial engines for the A380...but the 84,000 lbs. rated engines will be 336,000 lbs.)

Mriya flies...lots of pictures of her all over the world and even some of her in flight...right here on airliners.net, in fact...do the search for it.

I asked this question before (in a different thread) and got no answer to it...so, I'll ask it again...WHAT MAKES YOU PEOPLE THINK THAT THE A380 WILL NOT FLY?

The math is right there...with an actual, real life, operational aircraft that some might even add (AND IT'S BUILT BY THE RUSSIANS) to support the facts.

Please, explain to me why Airbus would spend a decade of time and hundreds of millions, even many billions of dollars to create a huge paper weight or shade awning? I don't get you people who doubt this thing.

And I am NOT a fan of anything involving the French! But it cannot be denied that Airbus has it going on right now, they are on their game. They are building incredibly popular aircraft, with the airlines as well as the traveling public.

They are a strong competitor to Boeing. The government subsidies Airbus lives on, effectively undercut Boeing's sales and that isn't right...but it is life.

Airbus is on the money with what they are doing to breathe life into the future of air travel, like it or not.

The A380 is here, she'll not only fly, but do so for many years to come. And you who have these ridiculous tantrums about that fact, simply do nothing but entertain the rest of us who understand that.

Sorry for being so blunt, but sometimes, its needed to get people's attention.

tac.

The A380F will feature 76,500 pound engines. Only the regular A380 will feature the 70,000 ones and there was never any talk of 68,000 pound ones.

Finally, taxi tests, sweet! Can you smell it?  goodvibes  Yep, that's a first flight I smell coming soon. I hope Airbus gives some warning when the first flight of the A380 will be but I wouldn't be surprised if the bastards go ahead and fly it without telling anybody. Either way I have a feeling it's happening soon.

I'm getting geeked up about it here in the States, I can only imagine how geeked up aviation nuts in Europe are. If I lived over there I'd be looking to take a week or two off and just camp out at Toulouse. Since I can't be over there, I hope I'll posting a congratulations to Airbus on the A380's first flight soon!  bigthumbsup

Whatever people's personal opinions about the 380 may be regarding its looks, one thing is for sure...this isn't an aircraft you can ignore!

Are these ground tests really strict or if the thing starts to feel "ready" during a high speed run can the captain just take off?

Are these ground tests really strict or if the thing starts to feel "ready" during a high speed run can the captain just take off?

Trust me, every movement of this bird is well planned. Each of these tests has a very specific goal and it won't fly until they get to that page in the test program. For instance, they won't try a take off until they have reached V1 and brought the nose wheel off the ground. Tests will be run to give confidence that the brakes will drag the thing to a stop if the first takeoff is aborted and so on.
