A 380 - The "Airboss"

Hi!
In January, a radio station here in Germany (SWR3) was searching a name for the A 380.
The winner was:
>>AIRBOSS<<
I think that name fits really to the A 380.

What do you think?

Oh please, keep it in your pants. I never said I didn't like the A380. I can't wait to see it fly, and I'll be waiting in JFK for its arrival. That being said, though, it does bear a striking resemblance to our large Floridian friend. And it is by no means a queen.

I always loved the 747. It didn't matter where it was build. It is sad to see how many Americans turned this into a contest between nations. It seems that many Americans invent an enemy when they can not find one.

It also shoed me that this forum is full of people that don't really love aviation.

What I learned from the A380 is how Europeans have so easily attached their national identity to a metal tube with wings. How sad. Certainly there other great things to be proud of. Or perhaps not?

Newark777 you evidently haven't been here for the years now when this A vs. B soap opera --propagated mostly by folks seeming rather insecure indeed about their beloved Boeing no longer being a kind of worshiping-point for the entire Planet or something-- has gone on and on ad nauseum no matter what the flavour-of-the-month form it assumed along the way.

("Sonic Cruiser?! Oh yeah, that's the best, man, the best the best the best! " Then there's no Sonic Cruiser so it's "oh the A380 won't sell, it won't sell it won't sell it won't sell." Then it does sell and then it's "Airbus doesn't play fair, they don't play fair they don't play fair!". And now it's "Ha Boeing will storm back with the 787, you'll see you'll see you'll see!" The A380 is not by any means the best-looking aircraft in the world. Who cares though? You try coming up with something that seats nearly 600 or whatever the respective client airlines will go for, that looks any better. It's like a double-decker bus --sure, definitely rather odd but then if it's around for a while most reasonable folks just get used to it. And which by the way the A380 is not that ugly when seen as an entire unit rather than just a few a.net snapshots of the nose section alone. And will probably be even less "ugly" still, in real life, just given the sheer scale of the thing.

But it's not around just to please your or anyone else's sense of esthetics, and I guess nor should it be either.

Yes, there are many people here who whine like hell about anything Airbus does. But for every one of those, you have a thin skinned European complaining that everyone is beating up on Airbus, and then trying to say it is because we feel threatened, or some BS like that.

Who cares? This is an AIRLINE site! Of course we care about how planes look! And yes, it was designed for a purpose, and little thought was given to people's opinion of its appearance. Well until the A380 approaches the sales numbers of the 747, there is no comparison.

This is not an American or an European thing, rather an appearance thing. The thread started off as a naming for the A380.

I seem to remember a similar thread for the naming of the then 7E7, well, just to let you know, my input was the "Dildo", how is than an ugly American.

If people can not stand opinions, then do not start a thread that is looking for opinions...

If anything - stop trying to emulate Boeing. The industry gave the 747 the nickname Queen of the Skies, not Boeing and certainly not a silly radio contest.

The truth of the matter is that most Americans don't give a rats backside about Boeing. There's no sentiment of national pride or anything similar to what most Europeans have toward Airbus. Mostly because the US Gov't doesn't care while the European nations that have given Billions to create Airbus happen to care very much - because otherwise their citizens would start looking at it objectively rather than emotionally.

So stop whining and drop the Boeing-Envy thing. It's not pretty.

Well that is funny, creative and I haven't heard that thousand times before...

One positive thing about the looks of the 380 is that the weakly topics of the "sluggish" take off performance of the 340 have nearly disappeared Smile

(strangely started and fed by the same people who do have "nothing against Airbus").

This wasn't a negative thread until post 10.

I'm a huge airbus fan despite the flag that sits by my username. But has anyone noticed that there is very little European-bashing going on here and quite a bit of American-bashing?

Those that argue so vehemently that the A380 is the best and the Queen is dead remind me of the jack-ass on my street with the Corvette. Always revving it and speeding down the street. He doesn't realize that no one cares!!! After a while of trying to rub it in everyone's face, we all start to dislike Corvettes altogether. Its a nice car, but I'd rather have a Porsche myself Wink

Also, what's wrong with a name that embraces the ugliness of an aircraft? Seems to work fine for the A-10 Warthog. I like A380 Skycow (or Manatee). It shows a sense of humor. It's one fat, ugly beast, but we're proud of it. Airboss is too agressive and too arrogant.

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all ok. Eventhough I am not a poster for a long time, I read the posts on airliners.net for at least two years now and I really really dislike the way enthusiasts keep up fights between Boeing and Airbus.

Of course, Americans will be proud of Boeings.Going into the Jetage with 707 and building the 747. We, the Europeans are also proud of the international cooperation between the countries building the Airbus and finally building the biggest Airliner ever.

But this is not a fight. There should not be a better or worse. Everyone here has their own favorites and it's good to talk about it but sometimes words are used here which are not friendly and not the way the big community of aviation enthusiasts has been with each other. This is not a football match where we shout at each other and hope that our team will win.

We are aviation enthusiasts and a big family with members all over the world!

Where did you get the idea that Europeans care more about Airbus than Americans care about Boeing? 99% of the Europeans doesn't give sh*t about Airbus, it's just that the European governments care about creating jobs in which they're doing a great job with Airbus. It has become a symbol of inter-European co-orperation, and that's why the governments are proud. (in other words, it isn't that much about the planes, it's about co-operation).
And since when has they're been a 'Boeing-Envy thing'? It's more of an Airbus-Envy thing. Afterall, it are the Americans coming up with ridiculious names for a fine plane and it is the American government whining about European loans to Airbus. Talking about not pretty...
