For years, JFK-TLV was one of TWA's prime moneymakers. Tower Air flew JFK-TLV for a while. And yes, Delta did briefly operate JFK-TLV around 2000.

Now, many on this board have said that EWR-TLV is CO's prime international route.

NW is rumored to be considering DTW-TLV service.

and i'm surprised we haven't gone to a 3rd daily flight.....even though we are limited in aircraft, we could swap GVA with two 75Bs adn send the 762 to TLV

Would that be direct, or via AMS like the India flights?

Nonstop JFK-TLV started in Summer 2001 and was dropped right after 9/11.

In 1994, I flew DL ATL-ORY-TLV and back. The ATL-ORY was on an L15, and the ORY-TLV was an A300.

Delta now codeshare on LY flights.
And this is a good market, there are at least 4-5 daily flight TLV-NYC direct (2 CO, 2-3 LY) + lots of connecting with LH/BA, and that is off season, on peak times there could be much more flights.
I'm surprised no other american carrier is doin this route.
However, if I remember correctly, NW can't fly to Israel for the reason that if they do, the airplane would be seized, as there is some kind of lawsuit against them by the former workers of another company (I can't remember if it was TWA or TOWER AIR) - sorry don't remember the exact details.

It is not NW, it is AA and TWA you are thinking about.l

One note on this, from some other discussions on this board 9/11 is not the reason why DL stopped this route - but concerns of safety and removal of gas-guzzling a/c - MD-11. They can operate it with the 767-300-ER, however.

We were never able to really determine this. The demand still exists NYC-TLV and DL has the route authority.

I surprised this route has not been relaunched. With all the Int'l routes being added, I am surprised...

Delta not restarting JFK-TLV can likely be related to two facts:
1) EL AL serves the route multiple times daily, and DL often has a tendency to just let their partner airlines fly such routes. Just remember that DL once proposed BOS-FCO, and who is flying that route now? Skyteam partner Alitalia.
2) Continental as a Skyteam partner, serving the route twice daily, even though DL doesn't codeshare on those flights, but they can book their pax on those flights nonetheless.
Regardless of the two factors above, once DL converts their domestic-configured 763ERs back to int'l ops, they should give TLV another try, especially because of all the advantages that route has to offer:
High loads
High yields, due to lack of tough competition (LY and CO are friends  Wink )
Needs only a single plane. JFK-TLV-JFK is more than 24 hours, but the plane can be rotated on one of the shorter flights, like AMS. A routing could be JFK-TLV-JFK-AMS-JFK-TLV-... and so on.

I flew DL from TLV to JFK via Orly a bunch of times in 1992. It was an early morning flight on an Airbus single-aisle plane, like many of the European airlines' flights, in order to allow for connections in Paris to other destinations.
Two interesting points:
1) Quite strange being on a flight out of TLV serving sausage and eggs for breakfast.
2) They had a flight map posted in the back of the plane. A very, very low-tech version of today's "airshow"-type displays on various airlines including LY and CO.

Didn't Delta get PanAm's flights between TLV and JFK? I remember flying TLV-JFK through ORY around 1993, and TLV-LAX on Delta through JFK in 1995. Both times I had to change planes.

I remember that World Airways also served TLV for a while.

I flew the route from TLV to ORY. It was a widebody, however, my memory is getting bad, was it an A300 or an A310?

I wonder why DL codeshares with LY and not CO since both DL and CO are SkyTeam members while LY is not. Does anyone have an answer to that?

Delta did briefly operate the JFK-TLV route from Spring 2001-Late Fall 2001. After 9/11, Delta had to choose which routes to keep and which routes they could chop. Because this flight, as well as a JFK-CAI-DXB were new and had not been able to pick up traffic, they were axed. Also, as stated, Delta was already looking at the chance to drop off the MD-11's, which were a bit of a problem with their fuel economy, and the fact that after 9/11, the Middle East was not just a very safe place for American's to be going, nor would they be wanting to go, with all the sentiment in America at the time towards the Middle East, but Saudi in particular.

Another route that was new and also axed was the JFK-NRT flight. I would like to see DL either re-install the TLV flight or, better yet, the CAI flight. Would be an easier way to check out the Pyramids.

I honestly wish UA once they emerge from Chapter 11 would consider challenging LY with routes from JFK, ORD, LAX and MIA to TLV. They could make a boat load of money, especially at ORD where LY charges ridiculously high fares ($900 a person)
