MD-11 Emergency landing in Seattle

Mon Feb 01, 1999 10:42 am

AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 27, in route from Seattle to Tokyo, was about 45 minutes into flight over the Pacific Ocean when passengers and crewmembers in the first-class cabin said they smelled smoke.
“You could smell a little smoke and then the pilot said, ‘we’re going to turn around and come back’,” said passenger Dave Swing.
Initial reports indicated the smoke was coming from the audio/visual equipment, used to display safety videos and in-flight movies.
While it was not immediately clear if flames were present in the cabin, flight attendants reportedly used fire extinguishers.
“They said to us to prepare for an emergency landing and also asked me to take off my glasses for an emergency landing,” said passenger Omi Honda. “It was kind of scary.”
No injuries were reported.
The plane landed without incident and everyone was safely evacuated from the plane.
It was not immediately known what caused the smoke.
It was late last week that the Federal Aviation Administration ordered mandatory inspections on the nation’s entire fleet of MD-11 aircraft. Airlines were given two months to check all Boeing aircraft for faulty wiring and insulation in the cockpits and cabins.

I see this crew did not waste any time. They headed for the concrete immediately.
This aircraft needs more than wiring inspections.
