AA CO and 747s.

Tue Feb 02, 1999 6:00 am

Why doesn't AAand CO purchase 747s for their new trans-pacific routes? Almost all the major Pacific Rim operators fly this particular aircraft. Does AA and CO not expect to gain a large market share?

I have no idea why they did not feel the need to buy them earlier but now there would be no point. UA has just pulled some of it's 747s off pacific routes replacing them with 777s. The 747s were not running with full passenger loads because of recent Asian economics and UA has moved them to more profitable routes. UA's experiance shows that, at least at this time, there would be no point for AA or CO to put 747s on pacific routes.

Both were once 747 operaters and AA had the 2 747SPs one time.

Also, keep in mind that Continental has a fleet of 727's and 747's operating out of Guam with Continental Micronesia. Soon the 727's will be phased out in favor of 757's. At this time Continental is just touching on the transPacific market (ie. EWR-NRT w/ 777). It may take a while before it becomes lucrative again.

Cheers,
Markus
