UA Express Invading ORD Concourse C?

Over the past few months, I have noticed more and more UAX planes invading the South part of Terminal C in O'Hare.

Is UAX able to use the gates due to a severe reduction in mainline flying? If not, where did all of the UA 737's move to?

Will the invasion continue further into Terminal C?

UAX has used gates in Concourse C for the past couple of years...before that Air Wisconsin almost always had flights out of C in the mornings. United mainline employees just took over ground handling of UAX at T1, they'll be slowly taking over T2 ops beginning in July as well. But it's nothing new, and I'm sure it has something to do with the decline in mainling flying, addition of Ted, and retirement of some 737s.

It's actually more convenient for connecting passengers, as they don't have to take the shuttle bus or walk to T1 from T2.

You make it sound like it's a bad thing. E170s and CR7s are beautiful aircraft, certainly better than those clapped out old 737s. Besides, United Express is one of the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak outlook at United. Express carriers are money makers for mainline carriers so get used to our ever-increasing presence (doesn't that sound better than "invasion?"). Smile

Who is the leaseholder on UAX' T-2 gates at ORD? Is it Skywest, Air Wisconsin, or United? Without commenting on the appearance of that section of the airport (I've actually never even been to T-2, so I can't comment anyway), the more flights that are moved to Terminal One, the better for United/United Express' clientele, as they don't have to make either the long walk or the shuttle bus to Terminal Two.

I think UA is the leaseholder.

I believe UA owns the lease and the City of Chicago is responsible for the upkeep. I agree that UAX in Concourse C makes connections VERY easy for some passengers, however, that also signals a major shift away from mainline flying over to UAX.

Big rehab in T-2 currently. Getting new tile floors, doing away with that awful carpet that hinders dragging a rollaboard.

T-2 (prior to rehab) was third-world. It brings back nightmares of the old Davey terminal in DTW.

You really didn't mind the looooong walk to concourse C when you knew a 747 or a 10 were waiting for you @ the gate for a domestic flight........

I remember flying LAS-ORD on a DC-10. That couldn't have been that long ago, could it?

I'm gettin old...................

I was on two express flights last week that arrived into C3. It is a whole lot nicer being there. The really crazy thing (well in reality it isn't that crazy at all) is that some of the passengers did not realize that the E170 flight was express. A man walked up to a United pilot and asked him if he was flying the plane, only to have it explained that E170 flying is outsourced.

With express now having first class and economy plus and some nice new planes, the only differences between an E170 and mainline is the lack of IFE and food. Of course nowadays many mainline flights in this country have no food and no IFE (NW for example), which makes express equivalent to regular. Using mainline gates is just a final transition.

What exactly is being done to renovate T2? I usually go through ORD
a couple times a year, and I have to say T2 is pretty grim. Very
little seating in the gate areas, few choices for food. When I was
there last September, the escalator at the end of the F gates(the
one that goes to the gates on the lower level) was broken. It's
too bad United didn't do what NW did in MSP and AA did in ORD
for it's regional partners before they didn't have the money to do it.

T2 will be rebuilt-but not until the O'Hare expansion comenses pending FAA approval. As far as I know, it will be solely controlled by UA and its Star partners as well as T1 while T4 will be controlled by AA and its oneworld partners T6 and the West Terminal will be for all other carriers.

Make that T3, not T4. T4 was the old int'l terminal (T5 being the new one), and unless I am mistaken, no current building is denoted T4. There is a heating/cooling plant where T4 was, no?

No there was no T4 ever there however T4 will be built around the plant next to T3 so this is the rundown;
Terminal 1 - United and Star
Terminal 2 - United and Star
Terminal 3 - American and oneworld
New - Terminal 4 - American and oneworld
International Terminal 5 - Conversion to a General Airline Terminal
New - Terminal 6 - General Airline Terminal
New - West Terminal - General Airline Terminal - Possible new Hub Terminal

All terminals will have customs facilities finally

Elgin-O'Hare expressway will be extended from the Lake Ave.-Route 53/I-290-Eisenhower Expressway to a Lake Ave.-York Rd./West Terminal End. The Metra STAR Line Terminal will be built into the area of the West Terminal. STAR Line will be an O'Hare-Woodfield Mall-Hoffman Estates-Joliet Train Line to be built. ATS will have an extension from T2 to the West Terminal as well. the Rent A Car area will also get an ATS stop and new parking garages will be built as well.
This will all happen on top of the Runway reconfiguration.

Just to clarify, I believe T5 will remain an international terminal (there's no way all of the flights between Star and Oneworld will fit in T2/T4, esp with Eagle and UAX taking over a good chunck of T3 and T2 (and now T1) respectively, plus the non-alliance int'l carriers) and T6 would be a domestic terminal for the other airlines in T2 (and probably DL & Spirit).

T4 never existed, but it was the name given to the temporary gate and ticketing facilities under the current parking garage structure. International passengers were bussed to their aircraft from there.

The original int'l terminal was located where T1 stands today.

I am sure of what I have read. West Terminal does not have a number so I am not renumbering other terminals. The plans drawn up by Landrum & Brown who are the citys aviation consultants give the current T1 and T2 to UA/Star, T3 and the new T4 to AA/oneworld T5 and T6 will be for other carriers and the West Terminal will be for other carriers or a new possible hub carrier (DL NW JETBLUE who knows)
