JM Bye A340, Hello B777?

Tue Jul 05, 2005 4:36 am

Air Jamaica had three Airbus A340-300, now the first (6Y-JMC) is gone to Air Canada (as C-FDRO) and the second (6Y-JMM) will also go back to AC.

So JM has only one A340 (6Y-JMP), but I'm sure that this plane goes also back to the former operator (Air Canada).

There are rumors that JM switch from Airbus to Boeing. But I think that they need very fast a new longrange aircraft. What about the RG B777 (ILFC)?!?

Okay, maybe is one A340 is enough for the LHR route. How often does they fly from KIN and MBJ to LHR?

Sorry about my bad English

Lease rates on the 777 are higher then the A340, also there are not any 777s available as all current operators seem to hang on theirs and the production for the next 12 months is allocated as well. Plus all costs to switch maintenance and pilots to 777 and low credit status of JM so financing will be difficult as well, so I'd say it would be smarter if they hang on to the A340.

"There are rumors that JM switch from Airbus to Boeing. But I think that they need very fast a new longrange aircraft. What about the RG B777 (ILFC)?!?"

What will they use for money?

Realistically, all they need to get to London is an A330 or a 767-300.

RG is not returning their planes anymore, at least not for a while.

Toxtethegrady

Totally agree with you.A330 or 767-300 is enough.

Short term does DL have enough 763s to expand their "as needed" wet leases with JM?

They might still have the second A340 but I can assure you it hasn't been to JFK for quite some time. JM has been operating out of the NYC area (EWR & JFK) with North American Airlines aircraft (B757). I believe they are only sending one of their aircraft to JFK at the moment, and its usually the A321.

So then what are their A340s doing besides their LHR run? And is that flight even daily?

I think that if JM really does go ahead with changing to Boeing that they should use the opportunity to co operate with BW when it comes to their long haul equipment. By the end of next year BW will have to make a decision on the 340 as their leases will expire by 2007.

Tell me if this plan is wacky. BW and JM place a joint order for some 764 keep them for about 10 -15 years and then trade them in for some 787s.

FCKC Thanx for the info

Air Jamaica has now 2 340-300 the first one is going to LHR and the second one is going to JFK. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry I'm correcting me Air Jamaica has 2 340-300 but are no longer flying to JFK with them. But I know that MBJ to LHR or KIN to LHR is a daily flight with the A340-300. Air Jamaica is doing MBJ to KIN to LHR or KIN to MBJ to LHR.

A 767-300 is not enough for Air Jamaica. It doesn't provide the capacity needed for this route. I don't know the exact load figures for JM, but based on the fact that most British Airways flights on the KIN route go pretty full, I would imagine that JM enjoys similar load rates.

Delta doesn't have any 763s available for a lease at all. Their 763ERs are being used to the max on international flights, and the 763s and domestic -ERs are also heavily used as well, with the domestic -ERs needed for more international flying for next summer season. DL could only help JM by replacing JM A320/A321 capacity with either own 738 flights through increased aircraft utilization, or through the use of a 763 as evidenced on ATL-MBJ.

As per Delta's pdf-timetable, JM still operates the A340 into JFK from KIN 5x weekly.

Didn't one of the A340s come from VS originally (leased from ILFC)?

No Air Jamaica is no longer going to JFK with their A340. I looked on their web site and the route to JFK is now done with the A320 and with the A321.

I don't see anything about Air Jamaica having 2 A340-300s. I only see Air Canada getting 2 A340-300s from Air Jamaica. If you calculate 3-2=1. Air Jamaica has only 1 A340 left. No?

It hasn't stopped them losing potloads of money.

I would not be surprised if JM shut down altogether, as it just does not have the cash available to finance any new acquisition or the credit to go out and buy. So everyone getting wet panties over the thought of new metal of any variety in JM's brilliant colour scheme will be disappointed unless someone comes in and rescues the carrier from its current predicament.

Sad to see this once legendary carrier in trouble, but they could yet survive. And I sincerely hope so.

This is interesting news - I wonder if JM really think they can survive with just 1 A340. Even if it is only used to LHR that leaves no room for maintenance or anything else. Their situation has been dire for a long while but I think things are getting worse.

BW, not JM, leased an ex-VS A340 (9Y-JIL).
