Picture Of Second A380

Sat Jul 09, 2005 7:31 pm

Just checked out the Airbus web site and they have a picture of the second A380 outside the hangar on July 4th prior to painting:

Hey that is cool, thanks for the pic. Actually, one thing I was wondering about, is why did SQ publish that picture of the A380 with the Singapore Airlines tail being fixed on it, but it is nowhere to be seen? On another post, one was talking about his visit to the A factory and he saw all 380's but none had a SQ tail...

Thanks for the pic!  Smile

When will the A380 with SQ colours roll out?

When is the first A380 with GP7200 to roll out?

I heard that the A380 is to be at the Dubai Airshow in EK colours, Is this true?

An A380 already with an SQ tail or an A380 wearing full EK colours all sound nice but I think we will see the first A380 wearing any airline colours at entry into service. The A380 is still in its test phase so wearing an airline livery during a certification program would be a big risk if anything happens during a test procedure that could result in an incident. You as an airline wouldn't want your airline logo on that aircraft if such a thing would occur.

I'm not saying that something bad might happen during the certification process but I'm just pointing out that you won't see an aircraft wearing an airline's livery which is still in its certification process, it's just too early for that. If it will happen, it will probably be at the end of the entire certification when the A380 is almost certified and all areas have been covered with satisfactory results. Now it's too early for that in my opinion.

I totally agree with you on that one. But dont forget all that free publicity they will be getting for taking that risk.

So is the SQ tail that we have all seen in storage then?

I don't think all the free publicity will measure up against risking the sales potential of the A380 on the longer run if any incident might happen. Again, the A380 is still in its test phase.

A388 - That's not necessarily true. During testing and certification of the 777, at least one aircraft involved was painted in full United Airlines colours.

It all seems to go so slow, they should have had at least 3 A-380s in the air by now, and #2 doesn't look like she's going anywhere within another 6 weeks.

MEA-707,

Don't forget there is a six month delay. I would imagine that changes have been made, so the line is delayed. But one thing is that the line is still going.

It's quite common for aircraft in customer liveries to participate in the test program... Check out this 777 on a test flight....

During the 777 certification process there was one flying around during testing and it was wearing UA livery. It even had "Experimental" painted on it above the forward entry door. I saw it in Denver on a few occasions.

I know about the 777 prototype of AF but what I'm trying to say is that the A380 is still in its very early stages of testing. How far in the certification process was the UA experimental 777. AFAIK it wasn't in the very early stages of testing like the A380 is right now, right? Please correct me on this. I would love to see the A380 in any airline colours soon, don't get me wrong, I'm just not sure if Airbus will do that with the fact that the A380 is still an early bird, so to speak.

Good to see the second A380 is coming out. Despite the 6 month delay I believe they will sort out the A380 and it will be a success. The first one only flew a few months ago! It's wanted and needed by the airlines that ordered it.

Cheers, Ralph

Correct. When I saw the UA 777 it was in the March '95 timeframe. First revenue flights occurred three months later in June '95.

Agreed. She does not look ready to me. Still looks like quite a bit ongoing in the wing area?

If you go back and look at the 777 first flight video a UA 777 is plainly visible getting checked out nearby as the first frame taxies for it's first flight. ref: 21st Century Jet video, Sabbagh

On the 747 program the No 2 airplane (N747PA) rolled out in full Pan Am colors and flew the test program that way. The No 4 747 (N731PA) went to Paris Air Show that summer (1969) in a Pan Am paint scheme but with Boeing titles. ref: 747 - Story Of The Boeing Super Jet, Ingells, pg 207

Actually, the UA Test 777 was very early in testing, as it did the cold soak in Kiruna, "Pond testing" during taxi-tests, and other various saftey procedures required by the FAA.

Hope it clarifies..

Can time or money be saved if carriers participate in testing/certification of an airplane prior to official entry into service?

Thanks for the link to some great pictures! I do think that the plane would have looked much nicer if the cockpit were on the 2nd level and the nose wasn't as pronounced, but I'm not an engineer, only and artist  Wink

I have never seen a civil aircraft that looked ugly to me.

I guess the magic escapes you, but I'm still amazed that something of that size, made of metal, can fly.

cheers

If you have problems finding the picture it may be because you need Macromedia Flash Player 6, the picture is a multimedia image not a plain old .gif etc.

The image is accessible another way by going to the Airbus web site http://www.airbus.com/en/ then move your mouse pointer over the 'My Airbus' heading, a list of options will then appear, click on the 'Multimedia Library' option that appears directly below and it should send you there direct.

The tail that was painted in SQ colours will be installed on MSN 003, as far as I remember.

Cheers mate. I thought that they would have done that aircraft in EK of SIA colours?! It appears as if they've done the tail already so it's going to be another A380 in Airbus livery.
