RE: Seattle A.net Meet - August 19 And 20

Mon Aug 15, 2005 11:39 am

April,

I have access to a pickup and can also dredge up a few coolers. If we want to do the catering route my community has a Costco card and we can get all the bits for the picnic there.

On a separate note, if NW mechanics go out on strike (almost certain my spies at NW tell me) I may have to go in to work for at least part of Saturday as it's bound to be utter chaos.

Thanks again for organizing this!

Looks like I can get Friday off from work so put me down for the various tours at PAE (ME-262, MoF, 747) if there is still room.

So far as I know I've never met anyone in this group face to face - be good to finally meet some of the A.net community - thanks for putting it together!

Charles (Ctbarnes), thanks - I have a Costco card myself so we could certainly go that route. Is there a Costco between BFI and SEA? Or nearby? I hope you can join us on Saturday. Do you have any idea what times you might have to go to work? Obviously, you would be needed if they do go out.

SEAChaz - cool, we'll look forward to meeting you on Friday. I think we should be fine for room. Will you join us Thursday night for dinner?

One more thing - everybody who is going please email or PM me so I can send you my cell phone number for the event. I don't want to post it here. This will also serve as your confirmation of attendance on Friday - if you do not get in touch with me or do not show up on Thursday night I will not front you a ticket for the Friday Boeing tour.

I'm still thinking about how to do the transportation - so if you need a ride please include this in your PM or email and let me know where you're coming from and how many. (I know I've asked you guys to let me know before, but I'm getting a bit overwhelmed going back through the thread looking for info.  Smile )

Three days to go!!  Smile

There's a Costco on 4th Ave. S. about a mile or so south of the West Seattle Freeway so it's fairly close by Boeing Field.

Contact info is on its way.

Here's some info about the water tower for the picnic on Saturday afternoon.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=sea&ll...95&spn=0.014139,0.029273&t=h&hl=en

Basically take 99 to S 154th, proceed west on S 154th to 24th Avenue S, turn right onto 24th Ave S, turn left at S 146th, and then turn left into the park. We may have trouble with parking - we'll have to see if we can park anywhere else nearby. (That huge parking lot is airport employee parking and we can't park there.)

Keep sending your contact info, guys.

OK, here are my suggestions.... All are of reasonable price, for all ages in the restaurant part (with bars attached) and no too uptight.

I have one chain restaurant, one eclectic local cafe and one local restaurant for our choices.

If I don't hear anything from anyone, or our lovely leader ScarlotHarlot, we should assume the first choice of each?????

I would love to take everyone to Salumi, but it's only open for lunch (to DIE for meats and italian deli -- if ever you MUST GO THERE!!)

THURSDAY: Traditional-ease-into-it
Bahama Breeze
All Ages -- a chain with decent food that's at least little different. At Southcenter which is close to the airport and the areas I think people are staying. http://seattle.citysearch.com/map?mo...lat=474618&map_lon=-1222607&fid=2&

-or-

If we get frisky, Go downtown, grab some food, and then take a ferry ride to watch sunset. Suggest Cascadia in Belltown with a walk down to water and over to the terminal. Timing should be about right assuming dinner at 6 p.m. http://seattle.citysearch.com/map?mo...7&fid=2&pfpexclude=profile_to_map&

FRIDAY: Seattle eclectic
Pink Door (in the Market, all ages)
http://seattle.citysearch.com/map?mo...lat=476100&map_lon=-1223423&fid=2&
Followed by Alibi Room
Followed By Zig-Zag
Followed by Kells
Then ???

More mainstream alternate:
Pike Brewery (in the Market, all ages)
Followed by The Garage for bowling/pool (Captol Hill)

Place I used to work, my boss was the cousin of the owner. We used to have departmental functions there and the owner would cook us a six-course regional Italian meal that would knock your socks off!

As for Friday night, I'd go for the more mainstream alternatives. Though the Garage is hideously overpriced, it is almost across the street from where I live at Seattle U.

Alternatives I'd suggest might be to hang around Pike Market checking out the shops and coffeehouses (Kells is nearby and I believe they have live music on Fridays), or perhaps use Friday night to jump on the ferry and watch the sunset. Of course this assumes all of us in the ensamble are over 21  Wink

My only request is that we delay dinner on Thursday night until 7. It's going to be very hard for me to get either to Renton or downtown from Maltby before 7. I think some others will have traffic problems as well.

It sound like this meeting should be a pretty decent gathering. Unfortunately due to a scheduling conflict, I will not be able to attend.  Sad

I will be spending part of my long-awaited vacation in the SEA area from next Wednesday night, Aug. 24 through Aug. 26 doing some sight-seeing. Following that, I plan to visit a friend of mine in Salem, Oregon that coming weekend (Aug. 27-28).

The Space Needle and the Museum of Flight will be on my to-do list along with:

Quoting ScarletHarlot (Reply 103):
Museum of Flight restoration facility tour at Everett

Quoting ScarletHarlot (Reply 103):
Boeing 747 plant tour at Everett

Could someone please give me some contact info. regarding the above-two, it would be much appreciated? Also, if there's anything else worth checking out while I'm there?

OK, so it sounds like:

THURSDAY: Traditional-ease-into-it

FRIDAY: Seattle eclectic
Pike Place Market Vicinity - 5-7 p.m.
Meet at the Pig at 5 for happy hour if you desire, which is right under the main sign of the market. Call my cell phone or Steve's if not attending happy hour and we will let you know where we're at. Plan for dinner at around 6:30-7. From this point a dozen or so places are within 3-4 blocks (and in the market itself), so the whims of the moment will guide us...we will make sure there is room for everyone and that it's all aged.

SEAChaz - where do you live? North end of where?

Will anybody be able to pick up Aussie747 downtown at the Crowne Plaza if he is joining us? I believe he is - I'll confirm this - but he'll need a ride.

Anybody else who needs a ride Thursday night, speak now or forever hold your peace.

I'll try to pace myself so it doesn't come to that - I'm up in the Bothell/Mill Creek area so a bit of a drive after a night of fun but its all good.

You guys making reservations for Thursday night? I'm still not 100% sure yet as I may have a bit of extra work to do so I don't get called back in Friday.

Okay, guys, I have some sightseeing flight info.

I called Regal Air at Paine Field. http://www.regalair.com/charter/scenic_flights.asp At the moment they have availability on Friday afternoon. They have some 172s that can take 3 passengers and a 205 that can take 5. Prices are not bad - $125 per hour for the 172 and $175 per hour for the 205.

Of course I am not going to book slots right now, so what I discussed with the helpful person at Regal Air is deciding when we meet on Friday morning whether we want to do flights Friday late afternoon. At that point I think people will be likely to make firm committments so I won't be out money!  Smile So please consider whether you want to do a flight or not and be ready to let me know on Friday morning.

The weather forecast for Thursday - Sunday looks great so we should get a good flight if we go out on Friday afternoon.

For those of you sober enough to stumble out to SEA for spotting on Sunday, just a reminder that I'll be the FO on HP flight 133 from SEA to LAS. We're scheduled to push at 1438. There's also a PHX flight that often pushes at about the same time, but it is a 733 while I'll be on the Airbus, so it shouldn't be too hard to tell us apart.  Smile If we're going off of 34 I'll look for you around the water tank. If it's 16...??? where might you be?

In all my years of flying I still haven't been able to have a photographer snag a pic of me and get it on A.net. (Royal, you kept missing my by a day when I was at Hawaiian!). I sure would love to see myself on here (hint, hint). Big grin

A couple of hours in the 205 with 5 of us would be $60 per, not bad for a couple of hours of flightseeing around one of the coolest cities on the planet. Sign me up.
BTW, I'm free all day Thurs. so if anyone from out of town needs a lift in from the airport, or help getting to a favorite spotting place, or wants to have lunch, leave me a pm.

Slight change of plan for me:

I mistakenly said I would work at Harborview overnight on the 19th-20, and now that the schedule is fixed I'm kind of stuck. That being said, I can now meet you all at Bahama Breeze tomorrow night. Saturday morning I need to sleep off the night shift so can still attend the picnic as planned (I'm hoping things will be calm in the ER, though I doubt it). April, what time should we kick off things at the water tower? I still want to try and get to SEA Saturday, at least for a few hours beforehand, but still need to coordinate purchase of bits so I can have the coolers ready for you.

Hey Charles, no worries. The plan is to be at the water tower at 2 but if you are a little later than that we'll be okay. I plan on heading out from the MoF to Costco a bit early and getting to the water tower at 2 or shortly thereafter.

Still no news about Saturday yet. Working on it. However, have been ill this week, so I have to be careful. More tomorrow.

ScarletHarlot and friends,

AMBER ALERT - MEDICAL EMERGENCY
I will have to beg off the entire weekend.

I ended up in the ER last night with shortness of breath, soaring blood pressure and very high pulse. Nothing on the EKG, but by then the event had subsided. I am on bedrest until I can see a cardiologist on Monday or Tuesday (slot to be determined). Whether this is anxiety attack due to overwhelming problems with my back and pressure to make deadline for pain management course or true heart problem is unknown, but the drs. are taking no chances.

I am very sorry that I will not get to meet each of you; however, under the circumstances, I know you will understand the need for me to follow the drs. instructions without question right now until these questions are resolved. I do feel very tired and it is hard to get around so bedrest sounds like a good idea. Thankfully, I can talk via my laptop, which doesn't take a lot of effort to type a few lines.

I wish you all a great weekend here in Seattle, it will be great weather and you should have a glorious weekend here in the Emerald City.

I'll keep you up to speed if anything changes here.

Charles, I am so sorry we missed you. We were there until about 9:15. I know you are booked for tomorrow night but if for some reason your plans change please call my cell and I'll let you know where we are. Otherwise, we'll see you on Saturday.

How was the Boeing tour? Has anyone's hearing recovered from watching the ground run of the Me 262?

The Boeing tour was great... If you took it in the last few years, you did not miss anything, as nothing had changed since I last took the tour in 1999. On the other hand, I did have fun meeting everyone. Aeroweanie, I think that all in attendance owe you a round of applause for setting up the tour of the ME 262 facility. What an awsome airplane.. wow. I can still hear the roar of those engines.

And what about that Emirates 777-300ER? It was RIGHT in front of us... Along with the JAL 767... WOW.

The only Boeing test flight today, from BFI, is 269, which is a WN 737. Talk about Sods law. Look for it to depart around 10.

For those of you who wanted to see one of the LR's fly, sorry. N60659 left yesterday morning for Iceland, the second airframe wont be flying until Monday.

On Sunday there will be an Air China 737 buzzing around BFI.

Hey guys,

The "official" events are over, and this thread is really long. I've created a new wrap-up thread in non-av. Please add your comments there.

I will ask the mods to lock this thread.
But that was when I ruled the world
