Seattle A.net Meet - August 19 And 20

Tue Jul 19, 2005 2:06 am

Hey guys, I have been musing for some time about putting together another Seattle meet. We've gotta get going if we want to catch the good weather, so, here is my tentative plan for a meet:

Thursday Aug 18: those of you coming from out of town will probably wish to arrive this evening. Dinner and drinks, somewhere!

Friday Aug 19: Boeing Everett tour in the morning, plus the Museum of Flight restoration facility at Paine Field. Lunch, then the afternoon at the Museum of Flight at BFI. Dinner again.  Smile

Saturday Aug 20: A picnic and spotting at Sea-Tac. There's a park near the water tower that provides great spotting opportunities. Bring food to share (out of towners, I'll work with you on this one), a chair or blanket (same with this) and your camera.

For those of you in the area, you could of course join in any part of the activities.

Do we have any Boeing contacts here who could get us on a special tour on Friday the 19th? I'd certainly rearrange the schedule for that. For example, we could bump the Museum of Flight to Saturday morning. Everett has to be done on Friday since they are not open on the weekends.

So who's interested? Please post so I can make a list of possible attendees.
But that was when I ruled the world

Please count me in for the 20th, especially if the Museum of Flight activity could be moved to Saturday as well. I may not be able to make it on the 19th.

I also forgot...... As a member of the Museum of Flight, I can get one person in for free with me. It would be great if we could get several members to show up and comp admissions for those who are from out of town.

you're three weeks too late!
Sounds like a great time.
Maybe another time in the future. Have fun everyone.

Russ, sorry we missed you!

Tony, great, I'll watch for your email.

Anybody have any hotel contacts that could get us a good group rate at a hotel near Sea-Tac?

Hey, I just had an idea...might any of you be interested in sightseeing flights? And if so, does anyone have any contacts they could use to get us a good group rate? If people are interested I can always call around and see if I can get us a deal at BFI or PAE.

Hey Scarlet,
I don't have a contact, but when I was there, I stayed at the Ramada Inn Suites on International Blvd. It was a nice hotel and reasonably priced rooms. The hotel is about 1/2 block north of 170th Street entrance to the SEA-TAC Cargo access road. It also has a great resturant!

There is a good place for watching ground ops right at the end of 170th St. That is where "N" Gates, and "C" Gates are, so there are alot of United and Alaska Air ops going on.
Also, from our hotel window, we could watch as well. Not the best view, but we could still see t/o and landing.
Across the street from the hotel is a cemetery that has a good view as well.

I wish I could make it, but one trip coast to coast will do it for me this summer.

(pssst: I'm still jealous!)

Hey Slam,
When I was there, there was nothing on the west side. There was all kinds of construction going on, I'm sure having to do with the third runway construction. We couldn't find anywhere to go on the west side of the airport. The one road that cross the airport on the north end, I think it's 154th St, is closed due to construction.

The one good place I found to spot from was on the south end, on 188th St, just west of the tunnel. There is a fenced off area on the south side of the road, that we parked in and we had a good view of approaches to 34L and 34R. From this spot, you are below grade so you can see touchdowns.

I hope this helps.

I was planning on having us gather on Saturday at the water tower just north of the airport. You get a good view of landings if they're landing on 34, or takeoffs if they are on 16 - it's incredible to see the SAS A340 take off from that point! The other good thing about this spot is that it is a public park so it would be easy to have a picnic there. Here's a shot on Google maps:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=sea&ll...21&spn=0.018856,0.026358&t=k&hl=en

The water tower is that round thing in the middle of the picture, just north of the parking lot. You can see the park around it. It's on a hill so if you go to the south side of the tower you can see the airport really well. We've gotten some nice photos from here.

I'll leave the hotel suggestions open for a few more days. So far, the Ramada is our only suggestion, and we have a couple of good reviews.

SlamClick, why don't you come up and join us? Or do you prefer to remain anonymous and curmudgeonly?  Smile

Ah I am disappointed I am going to have to miss this event! I live about 10 minutes from SEA, but have to relocate to PHX to fly (for 12 months). Sounds like a great event to attend and I expect some great shots! If the weather is ANYTHING remotely close to how it is today, it just might be heaven on earth  Wink .

Enjoy!

Oooooooh I'd love to go, but I'm only 14 years of age, and my parents don't feel comfortable me traveling to a place by myself  Sad  Sad  Sad. I wish I could go tho, I'd have quite a bit of fun I'm sure...maybe in a few years.

I can thoroughly recommend the Ramada Inn too. Spent a week there in May. You could watch the take offs from the window and keep one eye on the basketball on TV. I love Seattle in general, shame I can't get back sooner. The restaurant is great at Ramada too. Nice friendly Hawaiian guys running it. They got me to try the Sake one night and I can vaguely remember bouncing off all 3 walls of the elevator to get back to my room.  drunk

Nope - it's now smack in the middle of the 3rd runway project. I really miss it, was one of the better airport viewing areas I've seen.

There's also a great viewpoint at the corner of 8th Ave S and 192nd St from the parking area of the Lutheran Church there. Scarlet's suggested viewing area is equal to this spot, just on the opposite corner of the airport.

I am sad I will miss it, but am moving to Illinois at the beginning of August.

On another note, I take flight lessons at Wings Aloft which is one of the two big flight instruction/charter companies (with Galvin being the other, and there are others as well). I will see how expensive it is, but I know that an introduction flight is around $100-150 per person per hour, which is kind of expensive, but really fun. I have given paid for an intro flight for people as a gift and they love it. Even if they don't want to be pilots, the experience of feeling the controls and getting to look outside is a blast. Also a passenger is permitted to come for free.

I have worked and volunteered at the Museum of Flight, but I am not a full time employee, so I can't get anyone in for free. But I will say that it is an awesome museum, and you are right next to the runway at BFI with all of its excitement. On another note, there are biplane rides available at the Museum of Flight, and they are not too expensive at all. Seattle is probably one of the best cities to fly over because it is so beautiful with the skyline, lakes, islands, forests and more.

Scarlet,

Dang! I've got a 4-day trip starting that Thursday. I would have loved to make it. Keep me in mind if you do it again.

Obviously you won't be spotting at night, but I'm bringing in flight 898, arriving SEA at 2:21am Sunday morning.

If you guys make an extra spotting trip out to SEA on Sunday, I'll be working HP flight 133 SEA-LAS, departing at 2:38pm. I'll wave out the window at you!

FYI,

The cops are getting picky about the water tower (even though we all know it's a park). The county or someone posted signs at the 5 space parking area saying do not leave your car unattended. Plus if you are just hanging around the tower, the cops feel the need to harrass you sometimes. Not saying don't go there, just be ready for anything. It should be fun. Maybe I'll show.

Thanks for that tip, N317AS. I have been there recently and seen the signs and had no trouble. I sat near the watertower where I could see my car, just in case.

Update on a tentative schedule: I think we are going to have to move the MoF to Saturday morning. We have a couple of intriguing possible events that are being discussed for Friday, but they would have to happen on Friday.

That said, we may have to do any sightseeing flights up at PAE on Friday. Does anyone have any contacts there?

Are there any additional hotel ideas or do you guys want me to pursue a block of rooms at the Ramada?

I will have limited Internet access next week, so if I'm not posting as much, don't worry - I haven't abandoned the meet.  Smile

I'm a relatively newbie to the A.net community, but any excuse to go down and spot at Seatac and meet local (and out of town) spotters sounds good to me.

Put me down as tentative for Saturday and keep me posted on the Museum of Flight restoration tour - its pretty close where I live/work might be able to cut work for a few hours if I am here (my employer can't seem to make a decision on trips to DFW and ATL next month )

Hello all again

Does anyone in the Seattle area know if August is any good for going on a whale seeing trip?

Cheers

Thanks April for organizing this!

Things are a bit up in the air at this point as I'll be in the process of packing for a move down to California, but I should be able to go to at least part of the festivities. Put me down as definate for Saturday, and if we can arrange something special through contacts with Boeing on Friday I'll make the time to attend. Also should be able to make at least one other evening out.

August is a great time! Most of the Orca (Killer Whale) watching trips leave out of places further north (Friday Harbor or Victoria), but I think the Victoria Clipper folks offer a trip out of Seattle.
