Sand storms ? That's what usually causes diversions there anyway.

Emirates doesn't fly to Lagos on Saturdays, so what flight did they have to cancel?

The reason is a Lufthansa A330 over-run.

The a/c involved is D-AIKH, one of its tyres burst after running into a pot-hole on the runway.

It should be cleared now, the other runway should be resurfaced totally soon (hopefully!).

BA has announced that all Lagos services will be operated by 767s until the runway damage has been repaired.

Not sure, but it's coming from somewhere. Check the following for confirmation.

Why are they switching? Is the 767 better equipped to hit big holes in the runway at high speeds?

No, the B767 does not require as big a runway as a B747 therefore may not hit the pot holes farther up the RWY.

Well, the current BA flights to LOS are:

BA0137 - 1 hour 29 min delay
BA0075 - 1 hour 4 min delay

I dunno if that explains the change of aircraft aswell?

Thanks

see the following link, obviously a B767 needs less runway than a 747

I presume that the damage is limited to just one end of the runway

Thanks for the info. I guess only one end of the runway is damaged. Still, it's scary to operate on the runway when going too far on it could cause an accident.

Now I hate Sabena even more. Specifically Sabena A332s.

Does BA plan to increase service to LOS to compensate for the tightening of an already tight supply?

That's what I thought, I don't think I'd have much confidence myself!
Having said that, I suppose its true of every runway, that if you go to far you have an accident, i.e., an over-run.
Thinking about it, take off is easy as you just position the aircraft correctly before applying the thrust, but as for landing in poor conditions, if ILS is guiding you to land at the beginning of the runway, how do you say to it well actually I choose to miss the first 1000m?

Any help would be appreciated

Apparently the pot-holes are at one extreme end of the runway; hence the 767 is able to operate whereas the 747 would have difficulty.
BA currently have no plan to operate extra services - this could be due either to not having the aircraft to operate the route, or unable to be granted permission to operate extra flights from the authorities.
I don't feel that any airline would operate into an airport that is known to be unsafe - so the 767 must be well able to operate easily within the shorter runway lengths.

As everyones said theres a pretty big hole in the runway, some reports suggest nothing more than 2-3 inches while others have said 1ft. BA swapped to the 767 for the route leaving 157 oversales on the route (Monday 25th July). The 767 went out totally full and other passengers were offered tickets on Virgin which were operating later in the evening to LOS. The 767 will remain until the hole has been filled.

So, what is the process now for getting this hole filled? Are the Lagos Airport Authorities rushing to find out what needs to be done and getting it done, or are they just sitting on their asses not really worrying about getting it filled. Just wodnering about the politics behind the whole situation.
