NZ Given Unlimited Flights To The UK

New Zealand based airlines now have rights for unlimted flights to and from the UK. The agreement was signed by the British High Commissioner, Richard Fell and the New Zealand Government in Wellington today.

What happened to the original plan of allowing NZ one extra LHR slot each day?

I've done a search and couldn't find any new topic dedicated to this new agreement

I think from reading the Government Press release on the NZ Government website that it is the intention to have an additional flight into LHR daily through It looks probable Hong Kong.
It will be interesting to see what happens here.
In the immediate future Though I do not think Manchester is a goer.

I also thought this was the case. Good news if it is allowing unlimited flights.

I also heard on the news today that part of the agreement, the UK still have the rights to limit the seat numbers from the US to the UK. No mention of seat limits on the Asia-UK route.

NZ now has the rights for unlimited services to the UK, however getting the slots for LHR, and the cost of these slots will be interesting.

Well we know that NZ will only do one LAX-LHR daily flight and other flight will be via Asia. Could the UK impose restrictions that only the B772ER could do

Could a 772ER fly AKL-BKK-LHR?

When BR begin direct flights to LHR from TPE will they still fly TPE-BKK-LHR?

Yes, it well could but Air NZ would probably want to use the codeshare with TG than create a new flight (TG - AKL-BKK direct from 31/7, A346). The flight that most people are predicting is the AKL-HKG-LHR route where there are no S.A. airlines currently fly. Hopefully this will spread to another place such as Shanghai or Beijing.

I'm quite sure that whereever this new flight stops it will be operated by a 744.

I'd still say via HKG or maybe PVG myself.

I believe that a stopover in Singapore is likely. AKL-SIN is a bit shorter than AKL-HKG, and NZ could also route some Christchurch originating passengers to that service via CHC-SIN-LHR.

No doubt IMO at this stage that a 744 will be operating the route. Especially with SFO going 777 later this year, some 744s will be free. Still Backing HKG as no Star All. goes through there at the moment, and with the new refits, who knows what might happen.

It has to be a route that can justify year round pax loads, and good yields on cargo. Not even us staff (outside of fleets & routing/engineering) know where as of yet - we are all guessing, but there are a few frontrunners so far.

I am not sure that SQ will allow NZ to take some of their traffic from AKL to SIN. HKG sounds to me like the most likely route.

I can't understand all the excitement about this. There are already flights from AKL to LHR, it's nothing new. And if there are additional flights stopping at HKG that opens up the possibility of flying from HKG to LHR, already very well served indeed. I suppose that's why most neutrals (choosing my words carefully) would be much more interested in flights to MAN, even if these were just extensions from LHR say three days per week, like QANTAS used to do (yes I know you can stick the pax on a connecting shuttle - pax will then fly with Emirates instead, I know I would!).

Well it would be nice to have another carrier who you can fly completely round the world with Smile

LHR-LAX-AKL-HKG-LHR. Sounds like a nice itinery to me.

Also don't forget that an NZ HKG-LHR route would give us some (albeit small) Star presence on the route. Would certainly make me happier as a FF on Star.

KUL I understand is an option aswell that has been looked at by NZ. Not sure on their rights via Malaysia though. I'm sure they can get 5th freedom for a KUL-LHR sector though.

AKL-SIN-LHR is not likely at all IMO considering SQ fly AKL-SIN almost double daily with connections to a wide range of European destinations including LHR.

i doubt that AirNZ would fly via BKK, as competition with Thai would probably not be welcome since they are both Star Members, and going through Japan/Korea is too far off track..

So i suppose Kul and CDG make sense as other options.. Im sure the Malaysians would give AirNZ fifth freedom rights, probably in exchange for the same in New Zealand (if they dont have it already) then we could see KUL-AKL-LAX

I'd think that they wouldn't fly to CGK, they don't even offer a flight to DPS, the real holiday spot. I highly doubt that Air NZ would fly there before targeting other big cities like NRT, SIN, KUL, HKG, TPE etc.

Thats true about CGK...

But Sin/BKK should be out because of competition on the same routes by other Star Members.

HKG/TPE are too far off the route? which will add excessive flight time (i think)

So hopefully KUL will be the choice... That will make the day for many malaysian spotters... seeing AirNZ back in Kul for the first time since '98 at sepang i think.

I do not Think HKG is too far off. It seems to be the front runner at the moment. I doubt KUL will be operated to as a LHR stop at this stage as I am unsure if KUL could use a daily 744 flight from NZ right now. But, we'll find out I guess !!! Smile

Does this agreement apply to UK carriers too? Just wondering as neither VS or BA serve New Zealand. Would have thought a BA operated LHR-SIN-AKL flight could be a goer, in place of QF codeshare via SYD or CX via HKG. If timed right would allow passengers to connect at SIN onto QF's FRA and AY's HEL services too. I know liklihood of such a service is slight though.

Since SIN & NZ have an open skies agreement I think its likely that ANZ may operate AKL-SIN-LHR even tho SQ has 3 daily flights into LHR. SIN-LHR is currently served several times a day non-stop by BA, QF & SQ already on top of the numerous other possible connections with other carriers thru other cities from SIN. I doubt there is any need for SIN to protect the route for SQ. If anything this will add to SIN air hub status which takes priority over SQ's profitability, claims the Govt of SIN.

Shame there's probably not much demand between MNL and AKL and back and TPE and AKL and back, or it could route, say 4-times-weekly, AKL-MNL-LHR-MNL-AKL and, say thrice-weekly, AKL-TPE-LHR-TPE-AKL. This would thus enable the airline to provide the only non-stop link between LHR and MNL and back and LHR and TPE and back.

Pretty sure they have fifth freedom ex HKG to LHR already.

NRT is slot restricted and wouldn't be an option because of this IMO.

SIN doesn't make sence to me personally with SQ flying 3x daily. Stranger things have happened though.

MNL not enough traffic on the AKL-MNL leg probably.

TPE isn't there some restrictions on non stop flights TPE-LHR? Even BR go via BKK and will continue to do so when they get the 773ER.

Pretty sure this applies to BA and VS aswell, while there is plenty of traffic, for airlines like BA and VS it probably doesn't reap enough rewards yeild wise being that they have quite large premium cabins. But I agree it would be great to see a BA LHR-SIN-AKL service.
