LH A340 With Painted "football Nose"

Wed Jul 27, 2005 2:22 pm

Hi there,

Because of the World Cup 2006 in Germany, Lufthansa just painted the nose of an A340-300 (D-AIGS) like a football.
29!! other aircrafts will follow.

Come on, they can do better than that!! Let them take a good look at Germanwings (the bear) or their own retro a321. This looks just weird.

Agreed. It's a soccer ball. If they need a FOOTBALL, check with the Detroit Lions. They suck, don't have much use for footballs.

Hi guys,

I saw this aircraft at FRA yesterday and I dont like it at all... And 29 more?! I hope not a 737... I dont want to fly around with such a weird looking nose! LH should've thought about a different special livery for the 2006 World Championship!

Well....

that looks cool, I mean.. any addition to that ANEMIC 'color scheme' they have.. (especially on those 747s) is a step in the right direction. However maybe a bigger ball on the side would be better, like that Turkish A340 of a few years back. That made another BORING scheme look nicer!

Just as long as the whole world name that ball the way our friends from the United States of America want it to be named...

Is there any information already how the design of the ball will be the next time? To my knowledge every world championship is held with a different kind of ball. Would fit if the design of the nose would match the design of the actual ball.

good point but unlikely in my opinion because the ball on the LH seems to be the typical, let's say, 80's ball, son unless adidas will be going retro, I think LH just made a mistake!

Do you know if L will be having, besides the ball, a special WC livery? I'm sure they'll place the logo somewhere on all the planes, but maybe a nice full livery?

You know, there's a reason why most of the world calls one of the games Football and the other American Football... for you it might be a Soccer ball, but for most others, it's a Football - who knows... maybe LH will be sending out modified press releases in the US...  Wink ... that would at least show more effort than that nose...

Exactly my thoughts. The entire world apart from the US refers to football as the european style game. But most are aware of the homonymous usage of the word in the US and speak of soccer to not to confuse Americans. But that's more some kind of polite complaisance of us ...  Wink

As regards the football painting on that nose: Neither I like it. It just looks too unlovingly painted onto that nose. If they had better integrated the football into the remaining livery it would look better. Maybe some kind of morphing effect would have done good ...

One airplane would have been OK, but 30 is a bit too much for my taste. Think of all the hardcore spotter-photographers who now have to chase 30 different planes with that funny nose. They only have one year.

I don't really like it. But the best joke is that the footballs in our days don't look anymore like this. I have not seen since many years in official games a football with these black and white rhombus. Perhaps they are referring to the World Cup 1974 which also took place in Germany  . This for example was the ball of the EURO 2004:

I agree that one or two airplanes wearing a creative special livery would have been much more attractive. In my opinion it would also be great to paint an A346 with the flags of all participating countries as soon as the qualification round has been played.

Well, at least it is not bad considering how careful LH is with special liveries and stuff...
But then, LH is performing quite well economically, creating special liveries is certainly not the biggest expense but still costs some money...

More annoying is that the beer catering contracts went to Bud exclusively. What a shame. The nation of beer selling Bud at this event. Now that's ridiculous!

This contract has (fortunately) been changed. Now Bitburger is also allowed to sell German Pils at the World Cup (well, Bit is certainly nothing too fancy but definitely better than that diluted piss called Budweiser  vomit  )

Bet the pilots got a fright to see a giant soccer ball aiming right at the A340. Must have hit the aircraft very hard for it to get its self attached

The sports giant like Adidas and Nike may keep redesigning the ball, so that they can make a fortune selling it to us mugs, but the football on the plane is the classic design.

NB FOOTBALL, not SOCCERBALL!!

Maybe they will put pictures of Germany's current stars on the rest of the plane. Ballack, er.....

Their beer contracting changed quite often. They served Warsteiner Beer for years in the nineties. Then Becks a short while ... With Warstein being the place where I grew up, there was always a feeling of being at home at the time, although I didn't drink that much beer at age 15 or so ... .

I think it looks funny and fits somewhat to the simplistic style of LH, although 2 or 3 jets with a complete special livery I would have preferred like most here do. A complete special livery isn´t LH´s thing though.

29 noses like this are a bit like having the same joke told again and again. Seems like every single type in the fleet will have one member with the ball nose. LH and its partners in LH Regional have around 25 different types.

I like it. It is a special detail. If you have a special livery it wouldn't be painted in 30 airplanes.

We could see also a special livey, which would be great (they always are), although would be something different to this nose.

Again, LH is not a official sponsor of the WC 2006. So they are not allowed to use the official logo or the name FIFA World Cup.
So I like the idea. As said before, this painted ball looks like the classic football used for decades. If they would use the design of the new Adidas (who is the official FIFA partner) footballs, nobody would recognize it as a football.
And YES, here in Europe and in most other places around the world it's FOOTBALL!

Quoting Harry (Reply 46):
i wish i can go to europe to see the football games

Being over here doesn't guarantee you anything. Getting a ticket for your favorite match is (or better was) pure luck, as they were distributed them in a lottery style manner. Half the stadiums are gonna be full of funtionaries and sponsors and not with ordinary people. But most cities will errect giant video walls downtown or anywhere where they have large open spaces. I would expect the party to be there ...

So long as I have the funds and at least a week of vacation from work (Americans and their stupid 2-week vacations...ugh), I plan to hop over the pond to Germany for the Weltmeisterschaft.

I live in ATL and went to the 96 Olympics- it was crazy. Can't wait for WM2006. I would imagine every form of public transportation ranging from the U-Bahn to Germanwings to Lufthansa to be full of rowdy, drunken fans for the duration of the event. Can't wait!
