Strange - Having surrendered their LGW-CGN service, why not use STN where they already have established routes to CGN and STR? Perhaps the presence of FR to LBC is enough to put them off a STN-HAM route?

Well could then be their name "GERMANwings" be a problem? All other important LCCs have chosen a more neutral name for their company ...

FR's CEO O'Leary announced to withdraw from LBC in case the airport is not going to be upgraded as regards terminal capacity and runway length. As this is more and more becomming unlikely the chances for 4U at HAM are great ...

I do not think the name Germanwings is too much of a problem, Air Berlin for example is also succesful in Amsterdam and PMI, but as far as I know, Germanwings tried to secure other names with the ending -wings... So maybe we might see a Frenchwings (it would sound terrible, though!), Dutchwings or what else... Don't forget that Ryanair is also an Irish company, even though it is not that obvious (the harp is not regarded as an Irish symbol)

Anyway, I think that HAM was a good choice, and I think that they will be more succesful than in SXF which until now seems to be less succesful than they might have expected. HAM really needs more LCC connections!

The HAM-TLS flight is definitely a good idea, I am sure it will be profitable because there are many Airbus employees who have to travel between the two Airbus plants.

I dont think they will fly to Basel/Mulhouse.

It is easyJet who flies on that route (daily as of next week with a rumoured twice daily service as of winter schedule).

Great news for Hamburg though.

You are right - the editors of "Der Spiegel" were mixing up Easyjet and Germanwings- this means Germanwings will announce still one domestic destination in the next days without revealing which one..

This is very good news for the Hamburg region. Not only will the incumbent "traditional" carriers now have some competition, which is up to par with them in terms of central airport locations, routes and service, forcing them to lower prices. Also price-sensitive customers won't have to waste their money on FR alone anymore if they want to travel abroad at affordable fares from the region.

Seems like EasyJet waited just a little bit too long.

STR-HAM is already served by 4U, so it could be NUE, but DBA has also annouced that route a few days ago. Since 4U want to fly HAM-MUC (LH competetion?) maybe they'll do HAM-FRA???

Anyway, great for HAM. Finally I can benefit from the lcc boom Big grin

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought that LH did control Germanwings....so why fly to the same destinations from Hamburd to eg Oslo?

Interestingly enough Lusthansa ( sorry -Lufthansa..) will make another announcement regarding their own low-cost counter-proposal in Hamburg this week.
It is expected that LH will offer special-priced seats on availability basis to counter Ryanair and Germanwings !LH will not introduce their own LCC- airline but rather maximise yield based on free seats on existing flights.
All off a sudden HAM becomes the center of the german airline-developement activity- Easyjet is still overdue with the revelation of their expected third base in Germany..

Are you sure about that? Why should LH counter 4U. 4U is in a way LH's LCC.
Germanwings is, as already stated by HMUcfm56, owned by Eurowings, and LH own 49% of the shares of Eurowings.

LH is indeed going to test some sort of new low-fare strategy from HAM. I am not familiar with the details, but i understand that LH would dedicate some additional aircraft at HAM and significantly increase earning capacity while at the same time employing a dedicated low-fare strategy. However, the information linked to by Beaucaire's post seems to be in addition to this new strategy.

I assume that LH is quite annoyed by 4U moving into HAM. although LH indirectly owns 4U, it does not control in anyway network or strategy of 4U.

cheers

Very informative. But I think they don't want to counter 4U but LCCs in General. And their share of 4U could act as a kind of safeguard in case they can't withstand the pressure from FR, AB, U2...

Just recived an email this morning - -

IN english!

9 NEW destinations from Hamburg

Germanwings is extending its network to integrate the city of Hamburg as a regional hub, initially situating two aircraft at the city's main airport of Fuhlsbüttel, which is just a 20 minute drive from the city centre. Germanwings will be offering flights to and from Hamburg - northern Germany's economic powerhouse, claimed by many to be the country's most beautiful city - at bargain prices, starting at just 19 euros* including all taxes and charges.

Direct flights will be offered between Hamburg and the following destinations starting with the winter 2005/6 timetable:

Istanbul, Krakow, London (Gatwick), Munich,
Oslo, Stockholm, Toulouse, Warsaw, Zagreb

There are plans to add further destinations from the existing Germanwings network as direct flights from Hamburg in the near future.

Bookings can be made on our new Hamburg routes from 6pm (CET) on 10 August.
Be one of the first to book our new low cost fares from Hamburg!
