What do you all mean by "pinning the gear"? Is that a safety mechanism that locks the gear handle in the cockpit and prevents it from any accidental erraneous movement? According to the ABC7 Video link, it sounds like the passengers on that flight aren't getting a new plane... they're still in SFO.

Wasn't there a 747 lost within the last three years or so that broke up in flight over the Pacific, they said that airplane had suffered a tail strike and that hidden damage may have led to the break-up in flight?

Anyone else notice that it was the first 744 in the new colors that fell on its a$$?

Not very good.

Great looking aircraft, that livery suits it well. Hope she is up and flying again soon

I read something of a similar situation in Airways or Airliners in one of the editorial sections, of a story some mx guy going up into the cockpit of a 747 with instructions to lower the flaps.

Instead he raised the gear. Being you have to knowingly use the downlock override to raise the gear on the ground you wonder what the person was smoking. The picture of the 747 had the same outcome of the UA 747. Aircraft was resting on it's tail with the wing gear up and the body gear partially retracted. The 747 is a tail heavy aircraft when empty.

Not that this would have helped since they weren't planning on the body gears coming up, but how many airports have this handy high tech device for freighter aircraft parking spaces  Wink. EVA Air, FedEx, and all those wrong CG loading incidents probably could have used this in the past.

The pins are a safety device installed in the main gear over-center mechanism (usually). They mechanically prevent the gear from retracting. They allow maintenance to perform various checks and tests with the gear handle up. Some operators will install pins on layovers or during certain procedures (towing or taxing). Usually installation of the pins is a logbook item.

Akelly, you see just about the whole UAL 747 fleet through SFO in a week. This is were most the non-high check mx is done. Why would you divert to Seattle?

By the way guys, how many 747's does UAL have running in the fleet right now? Cause at noon yesterday they had 8 on the ground here. I figured thats a bulk of the fleet now.

Superfly, as far as I know, your flight 770 is still a 744. Email/call for details.

CI had an almost brand new 744F which sat on its tail due to some cg problem, it was flying again very soon but the gear weren't pulled up on that one!

At least only the a/c got hurt, not any wrench turners. It does look dumb though. Perhaps some refresher courses to the MX department about proper procedures should be in order? Improper or shortcuts in MX procedures can be disasterous (like the AA DC-10 at ORD, that crashed just after takeoff, caused by improper engine removal procedures).
Even in a tail dragging situation, like with the CO 777 at EWR back in March, it was only out of service for a month for repairs and testing, with much of it done by Boeing people at EWR. I suspect this a/c will be out a week or so , unless more serious damage is found. Will Boeing send people down to do the inspections and repairs on this UA 747?

Captain Speaking:

Folks we would like to welcome you aboard flight XX non stop to Tokyo. Due to the rising cost of fuel and the airline financial situation, we are just going to tilt the plane back, make lots of sounds for 10 hours, lower the nose back down and we will then all be happily at our destination. Meanwhile, the maintenance crew is scrambling to change the hangar into NRT airport to make sure the passengers are provided the most realistic experience possible.

Later,

So what is the report on the final damage? Does anybody have a timeframe for repair and return to service. Flying through SFO tomorrow will it still be visible?

The word I heard is $6 million in damage. Body gear may be permanently damaged but wing gear are repairable with gear castings shot and fuselage supposedly broke on production splices. Their was some talk of scrapping the aircraft but that is supposedly no longer an option.

Does United still have enough 744s to carry on ops? I know they've made one trans-con a 763 with a trailing 319, but I'm not sure about the others. I get to fly one of these beautiful beasts on Saturday, quite excited, even tho it's in old colors.
What now?

Sounds like its better to scrape it. Kinda excited to see what they will do with this 747. . and/or if they pull a plane out of the desert to fill its place! What are the chances of that happening?

There was a great day picture up on Myaviation.net, but I cannot find it for the life of me.

Also, some airlines have a device that is placed under the tail that keeps the plane from tipping over, although I believe it is used for loading and unloading cargo.

What does this mean? I mean, is this something that cannot be repaired? If so, wouldn't scrapping then be the only option? Or is it simply that the aircraft will be able to operate, but will have continuous problems with the gear? Could somebody please explain?

It means...Instead of being able to repair the actual "body" landing gear (the 747 has (2) wing & (2) body landing gear ea.) they will have to be scrapped and replaced with another set of body gear. However, the wing gear can be repaired. Hope that helps.
