Helios 737 Pics From F-16 - Are They Fake?

Wed Aug 17, 2005 9:56 pm

There are some pictures of the Helios 737 that crashed circulating on the internet that are supposed to have been taken by the Greek F-16 pilots.

However Flight International is reporting that the pictures are fakes because they show a 737-800, rather than a 737-300. Do you think they are right?

Well, here is a picture of the very aircraft that crashed. Compare and decide for yourself.

yes since basically the 300 would only have the one overwing exit whereas the one pictured has two, clever but they didnt do their homework quite right

Definitely fakes. All photos of 5B-DBY show a single overwing emergency exit and that registration does not look right.

Its definatelly a 800.
There is a very easy way to tell. The NG 737 (-600, -700, -800, -900) have a completely different hot section then the old ones. (-300, -400, -500)

Look at this picture which is a 737-300, https://www.airliners.net/open.file/902692/L/

Compare the exhaust cone with the pictures.

It's abviously not a -300!!

The reason they're fake is because the Greek military wouldn't have let such pictures go at this stage of the investigation. Or is that too easy, and spoils the fun for the anoraks...?  Wink

Hi!

And you also look to those Greek AF F-16's and there's no way for you to confirm their markings, and in real ones at least you can see the flag on the tail. This is actually some poorly fake photos. They can cheat some generously public but not enthusiasts. It came to my mind that photo of a guy on the top of the twin Towers and a A aircraft coming in!!!

Basic knowledge of the differences between a -300 and -800 is enough to know these are fake. The wing/flaps are a dead giveaway.

Apart from the obvious facts stated above, it seems pretty clear to me that the lightfall and focus on the plane don't match the surrroundings at all just compare the contrast of the f16 with the 737, nowhere near the same

I agree with qwerty. Pretty good job on this one, and it could fool just about anyone (well, anyone but plane spotters.) It won't be long before the fakers get so good that it will be impossible to spot one, and then pictures won't mean anything.

This reminds me of the one where the guy did the AA 757 flying into the WTC. he stole Jonathan's pic and used it. People like doing this but they are stupid anyway for doing it.

the 737NG has an ordinary canoe for that hinge, as you can clearly see in the third photo ...

It would have being more helpful if the creator of those 'shots' put more effort into something worthwhile.
Why is it fake images appear of tragic events - Sept 11th 2001, the Tsunami in Asia and now the Helios tragedy.

Very distasteful...

The engine pylon is also an unmistakeable way to differentiate any 737NG from a 737classic.

I don't know if anyone made this comment yet, but one way to see they are clearly fakes, besides the extra over-wing exits, is that the flaps are blatantly extended for take-off....

I don't think there are any non Greek F16s stationed in Greece, there may have been a small number visiting for some purpose or other but I doubt there are any stationed there. The US has no units stationed permanently in Greece and that doesn't leave many other NATO F16 operators who are likely to be stationing them in any longterm fashion in Greece. Except for possible Turkish ones but I think the Greeks would call that an invasion!

Even if someone isn't an a.nutter the plane is obviously inserted in because it doesn't blend at all with it's surroundings, I say probably a hurried fake, because they obviously didn't do their homework.

I enjoy playing spot the difference. I've got a new one. The "S" of Helios passes through a distintive window (one with fuselage rather than another window on either side). The picture of the doomed aircraft shows the "S" passing though a window in the ordinary series (on the port side). Take a look, you'll se what I mean.

They do it because it is their 5 minutes of fame. Whilst playing with photoshop may be tasteless in this case I don't believe it is a bad as the idiot who with the text message claim (who wasted a lot of investigators time) or that stupid girl who sent a text msg to her friend saying there was a bomb on board a Ryanair a/c so she won't miss the flight ... Unfortunately there are always idiots who call bomb scares in after real ones have gone off - been like it for years in England which I think is why the IRA started using code words I think...
