Assuming it actually is a satellite pic, no reason the aircraft can't be at cruising altitude. DFW to Killeen is reasonable, but could be CO from CLE to Austin for all we know, or AA DFW to AUS, or SAT, or Laredo.

Nope. No MD-80's into Killeen. I am almost positive it is DFW-AUS. I will try to post a map off of fboweb showing a current track DFW-AUS. CO only flies ERJ's(It doesn't look like an ERJ) into AUS from CLE, but they do fly in 737's from EWR into AUS (Clearly not a 737 Big grin). SAT is possible, but it would be higher, (upper FL200's) and farther to the west. Also, to further rule out the possibility of an AUS-bound ERJ, they almost always approach from the NE, not N. Anyways, I will see what I can find.

Yes, this was Greater Southwest/Amon Carter Field. It was closed in 1974, I believe. It's right next to the Aviation Museum and the AA Academy (hence its internal reference code GSWFA).

Beat me to it!  Big grin The old runway was just sitting there for the longest time before the new roads came in. Why mess with taking out heavily reinforced concrete for normal lightweight road pavement? The TXDOT guys got a little break for that section! Neat picture though.

Cheers!  Big grin

How old are these maps BTW? I have a pic here of YUL with the transborder terminal still under construction.

http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=31.02...69&spn=0.006262,0.009836&t=k&hl=en

Sorry, you may have to type in "montreal" in the search bar. Then focus in on YUL. The transborder terminal is still under construction - it was completed in 2003.

It is an AA MD-82(83?) going into AUS from DFW. Right there, it would be around 14,000--16,000ft

Hmmm......I suddenly think that plane over Killeen looks like an ERJ! Big grin I will keep an eye on Gray's (GRK) schedule and watch for smaller things, such as ERJ's. So much for my smarts on local air routes...........

One question about the 145-into-Killeen theory: would they really set up a base leg that long? In the pic they're just about to pass abeam the threshold of runway 1, 11.3 nm ESE of it.

I'm still undecided whether it's an MD80 or a 145. Is there a STAR into Austin or San Antonio?

I've got it! It's an MDRJ845.  Wink Another thing I've noted is that this photo section is at least three years old. Were the 145's being used on that route then?

Good point. In Waco though, sometimes 145's from DFW fly right downwind just east of IH-35 before turning base for rwy 01. That gives them about an eight mile base leg from ESE.

Thanks,

I finally looked at the arrival routes-- turns out the STARs into both AUS and SAT run from BLEWE to the Centex VOR. The MD80/145 is about 9.7 nm off that radial-- so the locals need to tell us how often ATC allows shortcuts.

AUS-bound traffic does not use the VOR Centex as a direct waypoint. Arrivals from the north fly over an intersection called SEWZY. It is farther east than Killeen though. I wasn't thinkin' straight when I posted that it was an AUS-bound MD-80. They don't fly that far to the west....under normal circumstances. BTW, Centex is used by departures as a waypoint, but not by most arrivals.

Can't be a 145, because there are 2 engines, and there are no engines on the wing...so it has to be an MD-80 (also because if you zoom in, it really looks like one anyway).

Admittedly, this may be a bit off topic, but this curious object came to my attention while searching for contrails on Google Earth. I'm not good at posting photos so I'll just tell you where to find the object. Locate Mongolia on Google Earth (Mongolia borders China to the north). Just to the north of Mongolia, across the Russian border, you will see a rather large crescent shaped lake. Slightly more than half way up that lake you'll see a long whitish object which I was originally investigating as a possible contrail. Upon zooming in more closely I found the object to be most unusual and interesting. Is this simply a flaw in the map...a quite interesting looking flaw, no doubt... or is it something more mysterious? Any opinions?

Best Regards,

Great directions! It took me about 10 seconds to start GE then find it. It is just a photo flaw...and a rather large one at that! As for the blue ghosts under the planes, I have no clue. The best I can tell you is that they were taken via satellite, not arial photography.

SEWZY is on that same radial, south of BLEWE, and farther south than the aircraft in the pic-- so we're agreed the aircraft isn't on the STAR into Austin.

Flights arriving into GRK from DFW come in from the NW side of Ft. Hood since they cannot fly at low levels over the base. That flight is most likely flying into AUS. It is flying parrallel to I-35 just over the Bell County Expo center. Yes,sometime ATC will direct AUS flights on that route.

Raking over the ashes, again, there's something on finals for 24R at MAN here:

53 degrees 22 minutes 05.37 N
2 degrees 14 minutes 42.08 W

I appreciate it's not a very technical description...looks like it may be a 757.
Last flight: DFW-LGW/AA/763. Next flight: MAN-CDG/AF/A319.
