Thu Aug 25, 2005 1:22 am

I saw recently on the site here and Finnair 757 landing at SFB, and the other day along I-4 I saw another Finnair in finals to SFB.....anyone know if they started service here and if it is nonstop service from Finland?

It operated for Air Scandic in the UK. On a B757 leased from Finnair.

Sorry, we would officially have to say they're based in Jersey, which is not in the UK.

Jersey is part of the UK, so technically it is in the UK  Wink

Well, this was the day of surprise for some:

Wikipedia:
. However, Jersey is not part of the UK, but is rather a separate possession of the Crown, comparable to the Isle of Man. It is not a part of the European Union either.

And, they have an internet domain suffix of their own!

...so how come there's all that off-shore Banking in Jersey? EU rules really don't apply there, not even double taxation agreements which all the EU countris have between them.

Jersey, together with the rest of the Channel Islands, are part of the British Isles, but not part of the UK. Jersey has it's own government, legal tender and is not part of the EU. That's why when you are in the airside shops in airport departures lounges across the UK, the Channel Islands are listed as one of those magical Duty Free destinations enabling you to pick up cheaper goodies.

Further, why then would Tesco, Amazon and Boots set up subsidiaries in Jersey to avoid VAT and other UK taxes? Mind you I think that loophole has been closed since but it further illustrates Jersey's status.

There's not even a formal requirement to accept UK money there. I'm sorry about to have brought this up, but Jersey is not in the UK, and the people and government of the U.K. do not 'own' it any better than they own, say, Australia.
Air Scandic is a front, a so called "off-shore" business that to me exists solely for a tax evasion purpose. Seems it has not got an air transport operating licence any longer, but is chartering other operators' equipment only.
