Skyservice Cancels YKA-PVR Service

Thu Aug 25, 2005 11:14 am

Skyservice announced today the cancellation of the YKA-PVR weekly flights this winter, less than 2 weeks after announcing it.
Their reasoning states the unavailability of de-icing equip, however other factors may have played a role. hmmm..maybe no ILS, no Bridge?, no hold room big enough? I can think of lots of em!

Maybe, but because it's the tour ops who take the risk on these routes, it's likely the lead contracting tour op on the charter who decided to pull the plug for some reason. The carrier just goes where they're contracted to go, mostly.

The scuttlebutt on this is that the Tour Ops (Sunquest and Signture) wanted to do it and Skyservice said they could do it. But the local airport management said it couldn't be done because of various operational reasons. So rather then fight the issue or work out the details, they just cancelled it.

Look for a Skyservice 319 to flying somewhere else on Fridays this winter!

Skyservice/Sunquest will op the flight out of YLW on Fridays....

The reason for the cancellation was the fact there is no ILS in YKA and no firefighting staff on site in addition to the de-icing dilemma.

I would also imagine that there would be a performance limitation out of Kamloops which would make it impossible to carry enough fuel to make it to PVR with a load of pax. Why the tour operators would announce these flights without ensuring that the airline can fly them is curious.
