Aircraft Mockup At LHR?

Mon Sep 19, 2005 7:58 pm

Taxing by the big Virgin hangar at LHR, I noticed a strange looking airplane mockup (no wings). It appeared to have the no. 2 engine of an old DC-10, while the nose more closely resembled a 747. If I can recall, it was green - the color of planes before paint is applied. I guess it's probably used for some sort of training purpose...emergency/fire rescue training? Any info would be helpful. I'm sure you LHR regulars know exactly what I'm talking about...

I love America. I guess that makes me Bush's poodle, but I'd rather be a dog in New York City than a prince in Riyadh.

MAN also has one; it can be seen from the level 13 observation deck; though I don't think it is used. the fire service tend to use the training ground on the far side of 24R usually

As mentioned above, the airframe is for firecrew training. I once saw an edition of the show Airport were a firecrew from the Caribbean was being trained by the Heathrow fire services. Having flown into London, Heathrow airport several times, I know the airframe you are refering to.

... yes, it was constructed to provide fire crews with every type of cabin/engine combination, which is why it looks so strange! There is no longer any fire training sign in front of it (there used to be, before it was moved to make way for the Virgin hanger), so it must be quite alarming for less savvy passengers!

The Concorde parked (sorry, 'abandoned') nearby also produces some very amusing conversations amongst one's fellow passengers...  listen

It is not a real airframe however, nor part of.

Is there any more photos, info etc

Also is there any good photos of fire training, fire engines from around the world, on A.net, Planepictures.net or Jetphots.net.

Thanks for the help.
