Jetblue A320 In Emergeny LGB

Thu Sep 22, 2005 8:19 am

KABC here in LA is showing live shots of a B6 Airbus who's nose gear is down but twisted around. It is circling on live TV right now and a full emergency has been declared.

Its into LGB, that gear looks wicked tweaked. Prayers to all on board and for the pilots. I guess it departed out of BUR to JFK and the pilot noticed the gear was cocked 90 dgs to one side. Its on KCAL 9.

Correct, they're circling to dump, but I dont know if the 320 can dump fuel. I also heard that it might divert to ONT because of longer runways.

Landing him at LAX means a closed runway afterwards (for awhile) and big delays all of a sudden, maybe some diversions too...

ONT has a runway closed for construction, so they're a single runway airport...

SAN is single runway...

Sure not going to BUR or SNA...

Hope they use SBD or PMD....

What the hell is a "soft field landing"?

Essentially a practice used for anything other than a dry-paved runway... It simply entails landing as soft as possible on the mains and keeping the nose off the ground as long as possible

KTTV/FOX 11 has/had some live air-to-air shots from SKYFOX 11 of the B6 A320. KTTV also reports that it's Flight 292 from BUR to JFK.

They're still saying the aircraft has dumped fuel. Can that particular aircraft jettison fuel or do they have to circle to burn it off?

A soft field landing is where you land on the mains but hold the nose wheel off the ground until the last minute.

a layer of foam helps prevent sparks/ignition.

Airport Fire officials will put foam on the runway to "soften" the runway and reduce the chance of fire

Simple really - the emergency services lay a thick layer of foam on the runway to reduce the risk or fire when the nosegear collapses.

So there IS talk this might still have to go to LAX, biggest runways, etc...

If it delays it delays. They are trying to find out for sure if LAX is getting ready for emergency ops.

nose gear light looks fine so if wheels are 90 deg then it is down in the steering bypass area of the gear i would think but have not seen a close shot of the wheels themselves meanwhile the msnbc guy is putting his foot into his mouth

They keep talking about a "soft tarmac." What is a soft tarmac?

I am hearing that this operation has a high success "rate" (used rate due to lack of better term) This seems like it would, but does it?

What kind of problem would this be? Hydraulic? Electric?

P.S. Definitely going to LAX.

God be with them,

All the news channels have it on. Let's just hope that they can get it down it's flight 292. They say one of the pilots is the director of safety of the ALPA.
