The runways at LAX are plenty long enough for an A320 to land without reverse thrust, and I would imagine that they want to keep the nose up as long as they can then they wouldnt use reverse thrust in order to maintain the lift.

Anyone else surprised they are egressing via the foward door? I would think they would want to take any added stress off the nose gear. And I would get some hydralic jacks out there pronto to help support it. As great as this is, I would not put any more stress on the nose as necessary.

Landed smooth as predicated , I HATE CNN they like to exaggerate soo much. And they come up with the stupidest and worst ideas. I love how some of the pilots that answered were like .... "umm noooo that would not be a good deal to retract the gear and land on the belly lol"

Was it just me or did the "flames" or sparks only flare up as the gear passed over the centerline stripes? Burning paint?

Now, to breathe a little lighter. I am reminded of the 1980s TV series Amazing Stories. The B-17 with the landing gear problem and the ball turret man, stuck in the turret for a belly landing. He is an artist and draws his plane with a cartoon landing gear. And he wishes, and wishes and wishes, and sure enough they appear, through his faith. Anyone remember that?

Flames may have been residual brake fluid in the front gear getting loose and toasty with the sparks.

Another person asked in the Pt. 1 thread about how the pilot didn't use reverse thrust - that vibrates the airframe and generally isn't as stable/symmetrical as wheel brakes, so if it was possible for them to avoid using it, I would wager they would.

FANTASTIC landing by the crew.

Amazing landing!!! Right on the centerline. That was awesome. I was holding my breath throughout that whole thing, wow.

Two things I was concerned about:

1) Why didn't they deploy the chutes?

2) Aren't they worried about the front gear strut collapsing?

PS i cant keep centerline in a piper doing 70knts he did no problem with his nose gear grinding down in a jet at twice the speed.

SBN580,
You are right. Why were all of these personel standing around under the nose, and pulling the stairs up to the nose, so more firefighters could board the plane? I was screaming at my TV, put jacks or something under the nose first. I hope it all resolves safely.

There was a LOT of fire from the nose wheel - a new paint job will be needed, but that is the least of the maintenance problems.

The pax look to be in very good shape - some older (?) gal took a picture as she got off the plane. Got to give the FAs credit as long as the pilots.

It's a good thing they turned off the TV screens. If I was on that flight, the last thing I would want to see is my own aircraft in distress.

Congratulations to the B6 crew. I was very relieved to see the pax just walking off the airstairs!

This was the first emergency like this that I have watched on T.V. and it really makes you worry! My heart is still pounding! It was such a relief to see those passengers step out of that A320, they looked relived and happy, can't blame them!

I applaud the pilots 1 million times!!!

I am sure that the National Geogrpahic channel will make this into a show on its "Seconds from Disasters" series!

I just heard they didn't use the reverse thrust to keep the CG back... and keep most of the weight off the nosewheel!

Why would they? The aircraft was sitting on the strut and they could drive air-stairs up to the L1 door.

Someone always breaks and arm, leg, ankle, etc. when they jump down the slides.

I do, however, think they should have put something under the front of the fuselage to support the aircraft. Seems like it would have been a good thing to do before they had everyone on the plane stand-up and start making their way to the door.

Caller on MSNBC says they did have IFE up until 3 mins. before landing, then they turned off airconditioning and the IFE.

Also said they shifted people to the back of the a/c to shift CoG.

Was responding to a question.

After the souls on the plane were safe I think a tongue in cheek is OK and I did say it was the least of the maintenance problems.

I've been on one significant emergency landing and when things turned out OK it was time to smile.

From what I understand, the Airbus System automatically turns the wheels straight after rotation. If there is a problem with the system, it turns the wheels 90 degrees, like what happened tonight. Apparently, some sort of system default problem.
