Transmeridian Just Ceased Operations

Fri Sep 30, 2005 12:13 pm

TMA just stopped operations as of midnight tonight. Flight 212 will be their last operated flight and is due to land in TOL at 0010. They ran out of cash. Their agents were notified about this around 2130. The airline I work for does their ground handling for them. Sad day......to lose another airline like this

holy cow. what happened...???

a friend of mine went from RFD-LAS and said the plane was full and the service was great (i know this is not inherent of a good business model or anything) but for christ sakes i would have assumed they were doing relatively well with that. I haven't heard anything about this until now...

I guess this also effects TransMeridian's operations on MIA-CCS, which they perform on behalf of Santa Barbara?

News will break in the morning:

Quote:
Sanford, FL, September 29, 2005 – It is with disappointment that Orlando Sanford International Airport confirms TransMeridian Airlines (TMA) has
ceased operating all commercial flights as of September 30, 2005.

TMA began service at Orlando Sanford with flights to Syracuse, NY in June 2003. In addition to the Syracuse service, TMA previously operated the following flights from Orlando Sanford: Aguadilla, Puerto Rico; Allentown, PA; Atlanta, GA;Chicago/Rockford, IL; Cincinnati, OH; Harrisburg, PA;
Louisville, KY; San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Louis - MidAmerica; Toledo, OH; Washington, DC (Dulles);

Passengers are encouraged to make alternative arrangements for travel as no replacement flights are currently available from Orlando Sanford. To the
Airport’s knowledge, TMA has made no arrangements with other airlines for transporting previously booked passengers. TMA passengers are encouraged to contact their credit card companies or travel insurance
companies to seek compensation for their TMA booking.

Flights operated on behalf of Vacation Express are expected to operate on Friday, Saturday, and Monday. Passengers flying with Vacation Express should reconfirm their flight times by calling Vacation
Express at 1-800-309-4717.

This sucks for BLV, just when it seemed like they were starting to turn things around for the airport. It seems like every airline they get into the airport goes bankrupt. Hopefully Allegiant will add flights to Orlando, from the sounds of things TMA was doing well out of BLV and they were going to go to 5X weekly in February.

This is the beginning of the shoulder season, so it isn't entirely unexpected that they would go down now.

The good thing about public charters is that all ticket funds are held in escrow until the flights fly, so folks will get their money back.

Reminds me of when Midway Airlines (I) shut down. One morning about 2 a.m., I got a drunk dial from a former girlfriend (and still-friend) who had worked her way up to station manager for them at a major airport. We had lived the airline while we were together and for a while thereafter. My then-girlfriend wanted to know why this woman was calling me drunk at 2am. The Midway girl was feeling no pain. "It just came over the teletype," she slurred. "They said to tell the inbound crews to just leave the planes at the gates. The lessors can come and get 'em. And the crews get to find their own ways home. Meanwhile, they said to take the rest of the stuff off the planes. So we're very busy emptying out the liquor kits. Say hello to Bill everyone." And a dozen drunk voices all yelled, "Hey, Bill!" as she held the phone aloft. "Well, we have a lot of little bottles left to...uh...process. Just thought you'd like to hear it from me." Sad day, but that little vignette will stay with me forever.

Thanks for the heads up about TMA.

My 2nd cousin and her family flew from ABE to SFB last week and were scheduled to fly back to ABE tomorrow afternoon.

After reading your posts, and checking out the SFB news release so I could print it and fax it to their hotel (so they would believe me), I found an alternate flight that leaves the same day from MCO to PHL so at least they won't be stranded. Just talked to them and booked their flight home on USA3000 for $69/person. Not a bad deal for same day travel.

Now they'll actually wind up getting home a few hours earlier, with a short drive from Philly up to the Lehigh Valley, and won't have to face the chaos that is sure to reign at the airport tomorrow when people show up for flights that no longer operate!

I'll bet that's the last time they tease the airplane freak in the family!

Thanks airliners net for helping to save their trip!

Man what a drag...I'll miss those TMA 757's operating SAT - Cancun. They parked right next to the WN gates in terminal one at SAT. They also just had an MD-80 here last week that had "Ambassadair" on the fuselage.

I thought Primaris was a LAS startup with 73Gs and later 787s? Or is this a completely different airline?

Very sad. Most of their pilots were furloughees from TWA, Hawaiian, etc. Now they've all had a second kick in the pants. It's a tough career out there.

Is this the same Trans Meridian that had 727s and A320s back in the 90s? It seems they had been a very small charter airline back then and now they were starting to finally break out. I'm very surprised by this.

So, SFB has lost 2 domestic carriers in less than a year, the other being Southeast. It will also be sad for many aviation enthusiasts since TMA had one of the last pax 727 operating in the USA.

Travelspan were flying TMA 757s as well.

Yes, but, IIRC, the original reason why they switched was because TransMeridian needed to put the 757 into maintence, so the switch to Primaris was supposed to be permanent. Guess it wasn't. Thanks for the info.

I flew next to a TMA pilot in July MCO-MSP, he was telling me how much money they spent retraining the 727 guys to the MD-80's. He loved his job, said the TMA boses were doing everything right.

I guess this is what happens when fuel gets too much...........

And the pastor asks everyone to turn to Chap 7 in your bible.......

The 752 that Santa Barbara used to wet-lease from Transmeridian was returned to Transmeridian on the first week of July and the Santa Barbara livery was never removed. I think this showed that Transmeridian was really short of cash and wasn't able to repaint the plane, that's why there are some pics in A.net of N720TW with Santa Barbara livery after July. Some were taken in SJU. Santa Barbara has never even dreamed about flying to SJU.

Santa Barbara currently wet-leases the only aircraft in Primaris fleet which is N740PA.

A shame that ABE loses it's second ABE-SFB link in a year's time (We had SEAL too). Good thing that Hooters picked up MCO. Maybe  crossfingers  we can get Delta or US or someone running an RJ down to Florida as well.

SFB - "Where Airlines Go To Die"

In the past 10 months:

Southeast
Jets Go
Pan Am III/IV- not sure what they are on, but they keep starting and stopping

And now TMA

I hope allegient sees the the writing on the wall and learns from what these airlines did wrong at SFB. Each of these expereinced great sucess in they begnining and all ended up failing.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!
