Was A380 Over The UK At The Weekend Of The 1st Oct

Tue Oct 04, 2005 1:02 am

I was standing on my balcony which faces south. My apartment is south west London, south of Heathrow airport.
I see lots of aircraft stacking for either Heathrow or Gatwick, however I started to watch what seemed a very large aircraft flying from west to east (my right to left as I was facing).
It must have been about 4-5 miles away at about 5-ish thousand feet. As it crossed my line of view, its profile seemed unlike any large aircraft I'd seen in the 'flesh' before.

It appeared stubby fuselage-wise, because the tail was enormously disproportionate to the length. It was clearly larger than a 747, but lacked any hump, but I could tell from the girth of the fuselage that it was probably a double decker... It then banked south away from me(towards the coast), & four engines were clearly visible on a very wide wing span!

So basically, does anyone here know whether the A380 was flying over southern UK a couple of days ago?? - Did anyone else see it? If you live south of Chressington - or near Leatherhead, it must have flown right over you!!!!

If it was, & I'm pretty damn convinced it was the A380, .. Why was it flying over the UK? - Did it land anywhere? Farnborough maybe?

Cheers

Wings,
Many thanks for the polite welcome  Smile

As you can imaging, having my very first reply being from someone warning about 'flamers' just had me rolling my eyes & thinking 'For Gods' Sake', i want my $15 back!  Silly

Lets hope only the respectable ones with something useful & interesting to say, reply.

Absolutley welcome, I was just trying to hope that no one would start being negative towards you.

Luckily they are staying away  Smile

There are several topics about the A380 world tour coming up. Do a search and you should find some information very easily.

Welcome!

Could have been an Illyushin 76, or Antonov 124

I have often thought I have seen it and I live in N.W London but I think I'm making it up and it was quiet 747.

Hi, good suggestions, but definately not. i'm familiar with both aircraft (Seen Illyushin at Heathrow & An-124 in Frankfurt) The profile was pretty much how the A380 looks from the pics on here & the vids i've seen.

The real questions are;
Who else saw it & what was it doing over the UK?

best

Well I think I saw it once in late August and once early last week it was the amount of White colour that made me look into the sky it was large, short and sounded strange. I was in south London When I saw it first and then at Heathrow the second time. I told myself I was imaging it!

What date/time was it? Can check the flight records tomorrow. Surely it would have been the talk of the town but I havent heard anything from company gossips.

Are you sure it wasn't a 747SP? I saw one fly straight through the Bovingdon Stack into Heathrow yesterday, a Saudia VIP 747SP, HZ-AIF. There are regular visits from Iran Air and Syrian example.

They have a disproportionately large tail and short body.

I think it is more likely this is what you have seen, and they are noisy. The A380 is apparently very quiet.

Hey at least seeing the A380 in England is plausible, not like the guy who fell off his bike at YYZ in the summer!!!

Thowman - Thanks for the suggestion, but it definately wasn't a 747SP, it clearly had no 'hump'. & was visually larger.

Cloudyapple - It would have been the day before yesterday (Saturday). Late morning I vaguely recall.. maybe a little later.

Cedarjet - I'm in Surbiton, 1.5 miles up from Chessington.

Welcome, Hypersonic!

Just to set the playing field level here, the last time that I recall 1MF being the first responder warning the original poster of being "flame bait" ended up like this:

No A380 flew over the last week-end. They are doing some maintenance actions currently so it is in its hangar here in Toulouse.

IIRC they changed an engine for verification also.

So welcome to A.net, but I think you might have seen something else.

In my opinion it was probably a Il-86 or Il 96. they have a big span and their tails are rather big.

Wouldn't have been an Il-96 as they were still grounded till today.

It could not be the beluga as Hypersonic said it was cetainly a quad

Hypersonic, welcome to a.net.

The majority of the people on here are totally fine and realise that we all are not experts on aircraft.
You do get the odd idiot but its usually them who ends up looking abit stupid.

I am tending to agree with Thowman, it may of been a 747SP you saw ?

Yes, joke. *cough *

Back to topic. If it was was clearly larger than a 747, and if it wasn't anything mentioned in the replies above, I have no idea what it was.

I am pretty sure it must have been an Antonov if it wasn't a 747.. I dont think the A380 would be sent to england at this moment

There were loads of Il86s in at LHR last weekend - i saw a few of them over the weekend.

But you KNOW when youve seen one of those because of the N O I S E!!!!

Perhaps it was a A340-200 in VIP configuration - Qatar Amiri flight perhaps? I know i'm so used to seeing A343s that sometimes when you see a stubby looking one it throws you a bit - especially in dodgy light.

Light Colour
No Hump
Very big span
Four engines
Quiet
Big tail compared to fuselage length
"Airbus" wing curve

Something similar happened to me yesterday. I was sitting in the garden, reading the paper and enjoying the nice fall sun, when I heard a plane noise. I looked up, because I thought it was one going to THF or TXL, I see and hear them regularly, here. I didn't see any plane flying low, but I saw a contrail of a four-enginened plane going westwards. I often see SQ, TG, MH, or QF 747s flying to/from the west. After getting the binoculars, I reckoned that it was neither a 747 or a A346 (sometimes I see them from VS), but a larger plane. "This ain't true", I told myself and I looked closer (could hardly see anything because of the sun) and found out that the fuselage was that of a large, angular plane with high wings. Than I noticed that the sound I heard was from that plane, although it was at cruise level. Must have been an AN-124.

OK, so no A380 for me, but I think I'll see it when it flies LHR-SIN.

I can confirm there was nothing unusual that day. Only an B74S in the afternoon, a couple biz jets and a T154 that's it.
