A Plane I Fly Crashed!

Wed Oct 12, 2005 10:29 am

N13585 was an old 172M, but a good trainer. it was the cheaper 172 to rent, the R cost a bit more. I take flight lessons in it every so often. But I guess I wont be any more.

When I was working on my Private ticket we had a plane with a call sign N50670. It was the ugliest C-150 you'd ever see, it was that gray metallic over navy blue color that was popular in 1968/69. Not that her appearance made any difference.
That damn thing flew like a nightmare. It was constantly creaking, rattling, and most importantly out of rig. I think the windshield would start making popping noises periodically. When you were practicing stalls, she'd always try to flip over on her back and drop a wing. She just didn't "feel" right. None of the other C-150's we had did that unless that's what you wanted it to do. There were quite a few times I refused to accept that bird for a scheduled flight. I told my CFI that one of these days that plane is gonna kill someone. The mechanics looked her over multiple times and said that nothing is really wrong with her, she has just been used as a "trainer" and what do you expect? She meets all FAA standards so get used to it.
Our school never did have an accident with that aircraft, and a few years later they sold her off in the mid-70's. But a few years ago she was involved in a stall/spin accident on takeoff with fatal results.
It makes one wonder if there were any "contributing factors" to the crash from this aircraft.

ZK-USA was the plane. A Piper Tomahawk, PA-38-112.

It was a dog of a plane. It sounded like a tractor, literally. It wasn't that nice to fly, though it did manage to get nearly to 95 knots at 2300RPM, which is reasonable. It had an old peeling paint job.

So really other then the dog engine it was ok. But a few years ago it was involved in a Fatal crash killing the one occupant. A student Pilot doing circuits.

I flew on the Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400 that crashed on take-off in Taipei a couple years ago. I'm not a pilot of course. Had a strange feeling at the time of the crash.

That's one of the reasons why I collect the regs of all planes I fly on. Fortunenately none of them has crashed yet. Only some DL 727s were scrapped Sad

I've crashed before, it sux, but own up to it and tell everyone your story to educate people your mistakes, and the things that you think you did wrong. Then also be humble and take the tongue lashing. Just NEVER EVER EVER belittle someone who has had an accident or incident. Don't think they are bad pilots. Because you are asking for IRONY to byte you in the ass.

The only plane that really frightened me was Aerocontinente's OB-1544 when I flew it between LIM and UIO. It was written off in landing accident in LIM on December 13, 2003.

And I pictured a few planes that crashed later - such as a TANS Fokker 28, Birgenair 757-225, Crossair Saab 340 and Avro RJ100 and Swissair's MD-11 HB-IWF...it is absolutely weird to have been close to the machine that created a disaster. It makes one feel void and powerless.

Yeah, I too flew on that SQ 744 that crashed on Take-off from Taipei a couple of times (was it 9V-SPK)?? The tropical coloured one I think, no?

As a passenger, I flew on Air Inter´s A320 F-GGED the flight before it crashed ...
They were doing ORY-LYS-SXB-LYS ... I flew as non rev. on ORY-LYS, they crashed on the next segment LYS-SXB before landing in SXB.

As a flight attendant, I did my last Concorde flight AF001 JFK-CDG on AF´s F-BTSC on July. 21st 2000.
It crashed on July 25th 2000.

I have to check in my documents if I flew on the A340 F-GLZQ ... scratchchin   Sad

I am taking lessons and and am close to going on my first solo. Crashing is on my mind, but is not really a concern. With all the air crashes at APA lately though, it is a little scary for my parents.

The only aircraft that I can think of that have crashed subsequent to when I flew on as a rider or passenger are:

Piper PA 28 Cherokee SIX, N55059 ( Local airport airplane ride)
Cessna 402B N6384X (Propheter Aviation, I flew on her, 86 times)
Beechcraft B99 N42AK (Operating as Air Kentucky/Allegheny Commuter)
B767-222 N612UA (United Airlines from MCO-ORD in 1990)

All these aircraft have subsequently crashed, the most signifigant being N612UA which was flown in to WTC Tower 2.

As for scrapped planes that I have flown, I dont have time to list them now....LOL.

This has become kind of a morbid thread but I'll join in -- I used to take lessons at Dulles (when that was still permitted) in a C-152 N757ER. I trained in it quite a bit and then read in the paper one day that it had crashed in Warrenton, VA with the loss of instructor and student. The instructor was a very accomplished female pilot who had been the first woman licensed pilot ever in Equador (I think that was the country). But there were strange circumstances surrounding the accident which led investigators to believe that it may have been a murder/suicide since the student had numerous personal problems and was taking his first flying lesson. The student's family dismissed the speculation but the theory remained. The crash profile was very odd -- full power from 1500 feet into someone's driveway on a clear day. To this day the FAA website lists the cause as unknown with a suggestion of possible foul play. But it was a really strange feeling to hear that a plane (and people) which I was so familiar with had met such a tragic end.

I took a flight in first class seat 1A on United N612UA exactly one week before it went into the WTC. Once I realized that was the plane it made it even more real, because I could picture the inside of that particular first class cabin and the horrors that must have been occuring.  Sad

I have logged flight time on the following aircraft which are not with us anymore.

VH-FTX  candle
Tomahawk. Mid air in the circuit over Hoxton park Sydney Australia, than crashed into a house. 2 killed in FTX other a/c landed safely.

VH-DDS
Beagle pup. Engine failure while doing aero batics force landing went wrong a/c ride off. 2 people injured (for all you up and coming pilots out there in case of an engine failure in a single or if force landing is required never choose to put your plane down on a green field. It could turn out to be a crop of CORN!... Always choose if possible a baron dry looking field.)

VH-EMZ
Archer.... Ride off during maintenance.

VH-CTT candle
Seneca. Crashed while in circuit area at Bankstown Airport Sydney. Both student and instructor killed.

All these a/c crashed in the past eight years. I was not in any of the a/c at the time of the accidents.

Moral of the story..... Don't fly in a plane I have flown  bomb

I flew on the Ethiopian B762 (ET-AIZ) that ditched into the Indian Ocean almost 10 years ago. I flew on it last in 1994 ADD-FCO-FRA in albino colours, which it had after having been leased out to Air Tanzania.

I've flown on N30DK, a Lear 35A, which crashed about a year ago. The company I work for had just sold it a few months before hand. It's a little freaky knowing that.

The Tomahawk I trained in crashed a week after my solo.
It was another Nathaniel Hawthorne student on her way to Nashua to pick up the examiner for her private pilot check ride. It was the nicest Tomahawk they had until that. Needless to say, she came home without her ticket.....

Very scary as the same technical problem that brought down TWA 800 could have happened on N93119 some weeks before! The fuel tank wiring was probably already damaged at the time of your flight.

Once on a flight from GSP to ATL, I flew on a DL MD-88 N927DA. In case some of you are not familiar with that registration, that was the DL MD-88 in which the engine exploded during rotation and shrapnel penetrated the cabin, killing several people sitting in the back.

A buddie of mine had a picture of him standing in the cockpit of a classic 747.
I saw the picture sitting on his desk for months before I asked him when it was taken.
The picture was taken 1 week before TWA 800 crashed off longisland. He was going on a senior trip in highschool before we started college in the fall. Anyway it was the same plane, same flt number and same crew in the picture that died one week later. He had a newspaper cutout showing the captains picture and comparing it to the photo it was a match. i got the chill from that picture right away.

The very first plane I ever flew was a little C152, N24961, and it ended up crashing when a CFI and his student spun in into the ground outside RNM. It was kind of spooky knowing that Id sat in that pile of wreckage not more than a few days before.

Two of the planes i flew myself had to be written off.....  Sad

1. D-ELLO a C-172 was deliberately crashed by a student (who had financial trouble), killing also his instructor.  Sad  Sad

R.I.P Theo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. D-EMRS a C-152 suffered a nosegear collapse on landing, when supposedly the 76 year old pilot came in way too fast....until the incident investigation is officially closed, the plane still "stands" at my airport. But due to the extensive damage to the wings and fuselage it might get scrapped.

N985BT - C172R - I flew it twice in the fall of last year. That following spring a student pilot tried to exit the runway on a first solo going way to fast. The thing practically tipped over. Busted up everything. It was obviously written off.

I´ve flown many times in Denim Air's Fokker 50 PH-FZE, most times on the jumpseat in the cockpit. The plane crashed upon landing in Melilla in January 2003; it skidded off the runway and fell into a ditch, the winge separating from the fuselage. Luckily no one was killed.

Was onboard N739PA "Clipper Maid of the Seas" at about Easter 1985, when flying from FRA to LAX for a school-exchange program - a slide of the A/C standing at the Gate in FRA must be somewhere deep, deep in my archives...But I was really shocked, when the B747-121 was bombed out of the Sky over Lockerbie in 1988

In 1994, I flew to Spain on a TWA 747-131 and back on the same type (the routing was JFK-MAD and MAD-JFK, both TWA 747s); I never got the registration for either aircraft.

In 1996, I was shocked to hear of TWA flight 800, knowing that only 2 years earlier I had been on a TWA 747 just like the one that crashed.

I just wonder if either one of the two TWA 747s I flew to Spain (and back) was the same one (N93119) that crashed two years later??

Years ago, shortly after having earned my PPL, I was busily building flight time for my CPL and instrument rating. The flight club I was a member of had just bought a brand new 182 that I immediately fell in love with and was putting most of my time in.

It wasn't three months later and a couple of guys flying it did a go-around and clipped some trees and then put the plane into a gravel pit at the end of the runway. Both were killed.

The owners drug the wreckage back behind a hangar after the investigation and I saw it first-hand. A gruesome sight that I couldn't begin to describe.

Some things we experience in life we'll never be able to forget...
