744 Domestic Config: How Many Econ Seats?

Fri Oct 14, 2005 6:19 am

The 744 Domestic does, according to the stats part of this website, have the capacity for 568 seats, of which 24 seats would be first/business and 544 in economy. If the configuration was all-economy, how many seats could be fitted in? Does JL/ANA operate any all-economy 744 Doms? Oh, and what kind of seat pitch would that be? Would a 744 Dom, with the extra seating and weight, still be able to fly, say, up to 11 hours non-stop?

According to Boeing's product manual, the High Density Seating arrangement is 624:

  • 539 on the main deck
  • 85 on the upper deck

The Upper Deck would be 3+3 and the Main Deck would be mostly 3+4+3 aft of Door 1L/1R. Pitch would be 31-32".

624?! Wow - impressive.

Assuming 624 passengers were seated, and that there was cargo in the belly, would it still be able to fly 11 hours? I suspect it would, but with the extra weight I'm not 100% sure. Perhaps it has more powerful engines. I dunno.

That would be tight. The fullest I've work on was Corsair with 587.
They could have gotten may 5 more by eliminating their premium class, but after that you have to remove lavs or galleys.

^Can't a 747 be configured with a 11 abreast on eco in the main deck(3-5-3), like the 380 will be(the regular 380 config will be 3-4-3, but it will be possible to fit 3-5-3 in high density configs)(i'm aware that the 380 lower deck is significantly wider)?

I am sure I read somewhere that some JAL and ANA 747SR or 400D models were fitted 3-5-3, and that was made possible by the mostly shorter and smaller size of Japanese passengers, I could of course be wrong

Thanks for the link. I didn't think the upper deck could seat that many. I always thought it was on the order 70 seats in fully Y-config. I checked JL's website for their seat layout and it has 86 seats on the upper deck. I have sat on the upper deck of the 744D only once. The plane was full and it took forever to get off the plane; since then I have never sat in the upper deck.

ANA seats 569 - F24Y525. JL has enlarged its premium class cabin so it seats 546-F80Y466. JL/NH has never ever operated the 744D in 3-5-3. Its always been 3-4-3. Seat pitch is industry standard on the order of 32/33 inches, not as narrow as some LCCs and Euro charters.
A couple of summers ago NH did outfit one or two of their 744Ds just for the busy summer period with an 594-all economy layout.

dont forget that you need to be able to get everyone off with half the exits blocked within x seconds....(60 or 90secs, cant remember.. been a long day at work).. i have a feeling that this may be the limiting factor on the 744D...3-5-3... thats a lot of bums on seats..

Sure they can, just ask Emirates!!  laughing  Just kidding. But seriously, I imagine it could be done in a standard configuration but the seats would be incredibly narrow. However, with these innovative seats it is definitely doable and comfort wouldn't be sacrificed. If anything, it would be improved.

Not sure of the exact config, I heard they were 550 pax domestic in Japan, 744 max certified is 660 pax.
