What Will Be The Code For A 747-800?

Wed Nov 16, 2005 5:45 pm

People on this forum are already referring to the 747-800 as the 748. Clealry they've never heard of the HS748 (note my user name!), many of which are still flying today. So, what will the 747-800 be referred to as?

I have fond memories of the original 748 myself - those Darts made the sort of sound a turboprop should - I used to regularly fly on the 748 between AKL and ROT before Mt Cook Airlines disappeared into Air New Zealand and the 748s were replaced by other a/c . Do you know roughly how many of your namesakes are still flying and where ?

By the way - I believe that it is the 747-8 not 747-800

Perhaps B748I and B748F would be appropriate?

because we are talking 3 digit code, and as one angry guy keeps screaming, 748 is already taken.

Don't you risk confusion with the 787?

You've got a point. I'd say that 74E would be the best guess.

No it has not. The HS748 ICAO code is A748, the IATA code is HS7.

Shorts 330 SH3, SH33, Shorts SD.330

330 A330 Airbus A330 all models
332 A332 Airbus A330-200
333 A333 Airbus A330-300

Saab 340 SF3, SF34 Saab SF340A/B

340 A340 Airbus A340 all models

343 A343 Airbus A340-300
345 A345 Airbus A340-500
346 A346 Airbus A340-600

B748 and 748 are unassigned, they are my best guess for the ICAO and IATA codes, and 747 when flown mixed fleet with other 747s for schedules.
