G-V Emergency At PDX

Tue Nov 22, 2005 4:42 am

Looks like the site was down for three hours but if anyone didn't already know, N225GV a Nike G-V is having gear problems and it currently circling near PDX for an emergency landing. Turn on the TV.

Hey, just checked Flight Delay Info at FAA and it shows PDX is Green. Which means there are no problems ATM. Has it landed, or is it pretty far away from landing?

Thanks

Listening to streaming ATC audio now, he is using a block of airspace he has been assigned to perform some "aggressive" manuvers (pilots words) to help try to get the gear down.

They are a good couple of hours away from landing, they are trying to burn off fuel.

I'm hoping nobody I know was on that flight.

Correction: They got the landing gear down, it will be landing in about 15 minutes or so at Hillsboro.

Everything should be ok. Pilots deal with this a lot. Will there be live online video coverage so we can watch?

Thanks

Check out the map of the flight path while he has been circling:

Brand new plane to Nike, too... Certificate issued on 11/3/05. Aircraft appears to be owned outright by Nike. Damn shame. Hope everyone comes out of this alright...

The aircraft is normally based at HIO. Got to see the other two Nike gulfstreams all the time there when I was getting my instrument ticket at Hillsboro Aviation.

N225GV has only been with Nike for three weeks, this is the same plane with its former owner.

Still listening to ATC audio.....

They had apparently shut down the left engine for some reason, they are waiting till they have it going again before beginning final descent.

I wonder if they shut down an engine to try and restart the hydraulic system. Who knows, but shutting one down sure doesn't help with fuel burn!

I wondered about that too. I waited before I posted that on the play-by-play just to be sure I heard what I thought I heard. Why compound a LG problem by shutting down an engine too? Looking at the pics on the TV station's website, it was the right main and they shut down the left engine. Anybody familiar with the GV hydraulics or LG system?

According to the Gulfstream chief test pilot on MSNBC, they used high speed maneuvers and g-force to knock the gear loose after the nitrogen air pressure back-up system didn't work.

We had a pretty good view infront of Aero Air also...

when they did the single gear touch and goes we originaly thought they were going for the big one... then we all realized once he pulled back up what he was doing. they did it right before the A4 intersection in front of us.

at 8am when he did his first fly over of hillsboro i thought he had to go missed because of one of you HAI brats not listenting to the tower Big grin

the media says that shutting down the engine on the unaffected side will over pressurize the affected side... that doesnt seem phsycly possible...

i really want to know what gulfstream says they did.

Sounds like it may have been an issue with a sequencing valve gone bad, or something along those lines.

The early video of the incident showed the G-V flying over the runway at maybe a couple of hundred feet with the gear barely sticking out of the wheel well. Sure would have been funny if they would have had someone in a REALLY fast car with a sunroof trying to pull down the gear while the pilot flew low over the runway ala the Piper incident some years ago!!!

Maybe a bullet bike???  Wink

Note: This is stated purely in jest. I know the difference between a G-V and a Piper Cherokee.  duck

No PDX flights were affected.... only HIO had minor issues when the tower told the student pilots to scatter. it was really quiet out there between those times  Smile

many years ago we had an incident during an airshow where the wingwalker nearly fell off the plane and was hanging from the tension cable between the landing gear... a truck raced up and down the runway for about half an hour to get the wingwalker off... and they did. so its been done before  Smile

this is what i saw at 8am during the first flyover... both gear were down but both doors were at 20 degrees from closed and the nose doors were completly closed.

Just some info I found out.. N225GV will be reregistered as N3546 (3546 is NIKE spelled backward on the telephone keypad). Just as the 6453 in N6453 is "NIKE" on the telephone keypad.
