UM Grounded - No Fuel

Tue Nov 22, 2005 10:18 pm

http://news.airwise.com/story/view/1132661263.html

State-owned national carrier Air Zimbabwe has grounded its entire fleet after running out of fuel as the southern African country's economy continues to crumble, company officials said on Tuesday.

.....

A senior Air Zimbabwe official said on Tuesday the carrier was forced to ground all seven of its planes on Monday, and to cancel all its domestic and international flights "until further notice" due to fuel shortages.

Robert Mugabe has been seriously destroying their economy for the last few years and no it's the turn of their aviation industry. Very sad news.

What's sad about it? Air Zim has been run by Mugabe lackeys for years. Stopped being a nice little airline about 10 years ago.

FINALLY!!!!

Well I am now happy, Uncle Bob and his sidekicks won't be able to get anywhere anyway!  Smile

This really makes my day.

Now maybe people will wake up and smell the coffee that us rhodies weren't making all the stories up about him being a monster. There are so many horrible stories the world has yet to hear!

Whilst it maybe that Ai Zimbabwe has had to ground it's fleet due to fuel shortages, what about other carriers?

Can't see many international airlines from Europe taking round trip fuel.

hi BBJII

I don't think many European carriers still fly to HRE - BA is the only one I can think of at the moment - I would think that they could probably stop enroute to refuel . I remember last year when I did an overland trip around Southern Africa our truck refuelled in Botswana before entering Zim - a somewhat different matter from a 777 I know - but probably a similar solution could be found. PS I see you got the map to work a lot more quickly than I did  Wink

LHR-HRE is under 4500nm, and run with a 772ER with much more range than that. BA would have 3 choices. They can tanker into HRE, then refuel on the way back, or they can refuel close to HRE and go non-stop back to London, or they can refuel both ways

Just spoke to someone in Zimbabwe.

There's more to this than we know.

Airlines have been uplifting without problems in HRE all week.

BA have uplifted as normal, other carriers have taken minimal fuel, but otherwise, no problems.

If true, then why is Air Zim only affected and not other airlines?

I think it is because UM dont have access to enough foreign exchange - apparently there is some fuel available at HRE - if you can pay for it ( as BA can ) in something other than Zimbabwean dollars .

I thinks is just crazy that government owned and operated (Controlled being the operative word here) airports and fuel companies, will not accept the national currency and only hard BRITISH or AMERICAN currency. I am sure that Uncle Bob will find a way to of course make this all part of Britains conspiracy that no one will accept Zimbabwe dollars, not even South Africans.

Oh I am counting the days until someone has the courage to get rid of him!
