Tonight : "Swiss, A 4 Billions CHF Crash"

Fri Nov 25, 2005 12:56 am

Hi there !

Tonight, on Swiss French-speaking TV, there is a documentary called "Swiss, a 4 billions crash"...

Here is the translate summary :

Quote:
4,7 billion to continue to exist, a half of the personnel laid off and 70 small recovered million. It is the sad one and expensive history of Swiss, our national airline company, since the bankruptcy of Swissair, until its repurchase by Lufthansa.
Temps present (the documentary) from day to day reconstituted this descent into Hell, which does not owe anything with fate, nor with the hard laws of the market.

Lets see the journalists point of view...  Smile

For a small country like Switzerland, a fact like this is quite "heavy" for each valet :
Swiss creation has cost 285 CHF (about 150-200 Euro) to each Swiss...
But now what is Swiss ? A subsidiary company of Lufthansa ? Where is the old proud of Swissair ?

Wow nice one actually, I'm quite impressed ! wideeyed

There was a good focus on employee, still working there or not, and the problem of SR bankruptcy and LX sale was well expained  Smile

However I must admit that this documentary have given me strong nostalgic of the good old time of Swissair...  crying

Hi everyone, this is my first posting here. LSGG, I thought you're remakr was rather funny:

"However I must admit that this documentary have given me strong nostalgic of the good old time of Swissair..."

That's how I always felt, but now the LX has become a LH subsidiary, I'm starting to feel nostalgic about LX as well...

The sad thing is that SWISSAIR was mismanaged for many years..bad investments and acquisitions and alliances in a very competitive world of commercial aviation..I used to fly Swissair on long haul DC10s as a commercial passenger they were very good..but a turn in the 1990s for the worse, the service standards did slip considerably and staff attitude did change..I think Swissair high standards were remarkable but not in tune with the rest of the industry :stagnation and conservatism comes to mind...Now with Swiss (So What It's Still Swissair! S.W.I.S.S)...Well you dont make a new pot out of broken pieces... It is just a matter of time..Lufthansa will not allow negative equity in its investments...Swiss might survive as a niche regional carrier..feeding Lufthansa's hubs..as far as long haul is concerned , well costly new equipment and a small base at ZRH will not suffice to be viable in the long term...

The really sad thing is that the company (SAIRGroup) would probably have survived if it were not for active mis-management. This was not about not doing something right but actively destroying the company. Swissair spawned a number of quite successful aviation related businesses which could have carried the company on and probably still would.

I've looked at that report yesterday evening via the TSR.ch website.

I've known "Temps Présent" TV reports for a long time now and they are always excellent and accurate.

I'd just have liked more mentions to the numerous companies that Swissair helped to crash like Sabena, AOM, Air Lib ,... They only reffered to the failed "Hunter" strategy of Bruguisser.
Anyway, it was as always sad to see all the employees that were left dumped after the collapse.

Very very interesting. Thank you TSR !!!
