Sat Dec 10, 2005 11:09 am

When LTU starts there seasonal operations into Toronto YYZ in May '06...it wont stop. LTU will operate year round 2x weekly service DUS-YYZ on Tuesdays & Thursdays using A330-200 aircraft. The announcement was made at a YYZ conference with the airline and handling company.

Great news, at least for YYZ. How about a year round YVR-MUC?

What kind of loads have they been getting for their seasonal DUS service? What is so appealing about Dusseldolf?
If you flew today, thank a Flight Dispatcher!

It's not just Dusseldorf itself, but the whole NRW catchment area which has a population of about 18 million people. The whole Rhein-Ruhr area is very industrialized and many big companies are located there. Plus there are many German immigrants living in the YYZ area such as in Kitchener. Dusseldorf is not very touristy but the Germans have money and love to travel.

The summer loads are usually full of German tourists coming to Canada for vacation...Plus it seems the Germans would rather fly LT and connect throughout the country then LH...kinda like MP vs KL in YYZ also

I don't live in the Rhein-Ruhr-Area, but instead of taking an (expensive) LH-flight out of FRA I'd rather take a train connecting to DUS to fly LT. LT has very good reputation in Germany.
I think LT will earn money on the YVR-route with lots of German tourists on board...

The LTU sales rep in YVR has indicated this past Auguast that LTU will no longer fly seasonal to YYC and beginning winter 2006 will also go year round into YVR

I still believe that the biggest mistake that LT did was to get rid of the 767... The A330 is such a large plane (with LT's seating...) and thus hard to fill.
But anyways, great news but I just hope that this adventure will work out better than the China routes...

Good God, LTU is at it again.

I honestly don't know what's up there. In the past they used to fly mainly to "warm water destinations" in the winter and I think they were quite successful with that. Why are they trying things like that now?

Who the heck wants to fly to YYZ from DUS in the winter? Tourists? No, way to cold there. Business man? Very few, other airlines and airline alliances have better offers I think. People who want to visit relatives and friends there? Yes, but only a few and way to less to fill two A330's a week to operate profitable.

Sorry but I can't take this airline serious anymore, first they tried to earn money while offering flights to PVG and PEK, they failed badly. Then they tried to copy Air Berlin's city shuttle service, they failed again and the three daily flights to Vienna were cancelled before they started.

Oh yes, I forgot: LTU just got a financial support of 200 mio. EUR, so the management is trying to burn it as soon as possible like they already did well in the past.

A few months ago I met a LTU F/A on a party, we had a little chat and she told me that she is working for "such a successful airline" and that "LTU is doing very, very well". Makes me wonder if Kim Yong Il shows up at DUS from time to time to give all LT employees a brainwash.

I don't like Lufthansa but compared to LTU is Lufthansa a world-class airline. Both airlines are offering an inferior product, but at least are the LH guys so intelligent to offer a bad product while making money beside.

My flight from DUS-YYC got cancelled twice last December and apparently didn't start service until 6 weeks after the original launch date. I couldn't understand why LT (or any airline) would even consider doing a charter in the winter to YYC (or YVR for that matter), there's just not enough touristy things to do in Western Canada during the winter, unless you ski. Most national parks are closed as other tourist attractions. I can't see why LT would start a year round YVR service if even the major airlines downgrade during the winter. I could maybe see a YVR-YYC-DUS, but not just one or the other.

I think that they are trying to find themselves. They seem to be wanting to compete with everyone in every market these days. They seemed to be a much better airline when they were strictly offering tourist destisnations into the sun.

As any airline, that's debateable.

There is conex traffic and donate forget there is a large German population in BC and immigration from Germany has remained very consistent over the last 7 years. And yes there is a lot of skiing traffic as well particularly to the interior mountains. Calgary was a disater from what I hear and Vancouver out performed expections during the summer months. I think YVR would be a better option than YYZ.

Maybe they will order the 787 at some time. I know that the Airbusses are quite young and that LTU does not want to have a mixed fleet anymore since the mixed Boeing/MD/Lockheed and Airbus fleet nearly broke their neck financially.
But I do believe the 787 has good chances with Condor and LTU when they are out of their financial troubles.
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

There is a large German population in BC, not nearly as much as the Kitchener, Ontario area, but has a fair size. LT offers very limited cnx through DUS. There is a lot of skiing traffic, but enough to justify a weekly A330? I doubt it. I'm very sure that the summer service to YVR out performed expectations for the second year in a row, but that's summer and not winter. YVR pretty well dies in the winter. If LH and KL can't even maintain B747 and MD11 service all year (and don't forget that the pax are mostly cnx through FRA and AMS to other parts of the world), I can't imagine LT serving YVR all year with an A330. I've traveled the YLW-DUS route at least 4 times a year over the last 10 years myself. I'd love to see a yearly service to YVR (even though I don't like LTU), as it'll give me another option, but I just can't see it working.

I know that here in YHZ, DE and TS fly 4 times a week from Germany to YHZ in the summer and the flights are FULL (seriously):

Monday FRA-YHZ Condor 767-300
Wednesday FRA-YHZ Air Transat A310-300
Wednesady MUC-YHZ Air Transat A310-300
Friday FRA-YHZ Condor 767-300

It's always suprised me that we don't have any service to YHZ from HAM (I think TS did a few years ago) or DUS.

I work for a car rental company in YHZ that is very well-known in Europe with pre-paid voucher rentals. I've seen us expecting 74 customers off that one aircraft on Fridays waiting to pick up rental cars...

The important part is: "Summer" !

While there is a considerable amount of traffic in summer, I agree with those A.netters that doubt that 2 LT-flights per week DUS - YYZ can be filled sufficiently in WINTER to make a revenue from them.
