Finally Scandinavia will be on the EK routemap!

Not official yet, but uploaded to Amadeus today is a new service from Dubai to Copenhagen effective October the 3rd 2006.

EK135 DXB-CPH 09.25-14.05 A332 x234x6x
EK136 CPH-DXB 15.45-00.00 A332 x234x6x

I have been waiting for this to happen for a long time and looking forward to welcome Emirates here in Copenhagen!

I have also read that EK might start a route to ARN, but now with the new CPH route I doubt that ARN will get one too.

Is the demand high enough for EK to operate to airports like ARN and OSL?

Or how about DXB-ARN-OLS-ARN-DXB??? ------------ Probably unlikely.

SK have been cutting long haul out of all major bases for years so Im glad to see any new long haul carrier serving Scandinavia.

The frequency is interesting. Most, if not all, of their other European destinations are served at least daily.

They have started some of their European destinations with four or five weekly flights - Vienna started out with five flights pr. week but soon after that became daily.

I suppose they eventual will do the same with this route to Copenhagen.

If EK is successful with CPH, I'll bet they'll replace the A332 with larger equipment and move the A332 to STO or OSL...

I think EK will be very successful in Scandinavia.

More to the point: Who & why?

Dubai is somewhat of a detour for Asia bound Scandinavians.

And I don't see DXB "sand & shopping" tourism being a major draw for Scandinavians either. And vacationers are already served by Antalya, Sharm-El-Sheikh etc. CPH-DXB is also a fairly long flight.

Are they aiming for the DXB bound business travellers? (of which I'm sure there's a fair share)

Or is CPH-DXB simply a strategic route?

Well, who expected that EK would be able to fill several B773 with 384 seats every day from UK airports? Brits have hundreds of destinations to choose from in the Med area and trans-Atlantic, and Asian destinations are no closer to them via DXB, yet DXB is enormously popular with British tourists and has lots of connecting traffic...

Danish people are spoiled by having so many direct flights to everywhere, while Norwegians and Swedes are starved for exotic destinations - so EK will do well if they market their routes in those countries

I can't wait to see Emirates in CPH; however, I don't understand why they think they can fill 6 planes weekly to DXB. It makes me think that they are just doing it for the prestige. Anyway, I hope they will succeed with the new route!

Includes DBX in the network of big hubs that are to serve Europe for intercontinental flights in a post national-carrier era. It seems to be just a matter of time before SK is only an intra-continental airline.

Not really. SQ have routes CPH-SIN more or less right over DBX and even to BKK it will not be very much off the track. Good to have some competition for SQ et al to earn their bread!

Maybe its not off track in terms of location, but it still takes 1-2 hours to make a stopover in dubai first, so it is kind of a detour

Nah, route is usually much further north, crossing northern Iran & Afghanistan. Great circle route is even more northern.

Still, for the cost sensitive passenger I'm sure it's only a minor inconvenience transiting DXB.

(and I'm certain that EK will have a *very* competitive price for CPH-DXB-SIN!)

I don't think so, Finnair already competes with EK over Europe to Asia-passengers and does quite well on that sector. Local passengers between HEL and Finnair's Asian destinations consist mainly of tour operator customers, which would continue using Finnair's non-stop flights. But EK's colors would look very nice in wintry Helsinki!

Let me answer your question. EK is an airline that largely targets the "6th freedom / transitting passenger" who connect on to other EK flights via their DXB hub. This is also their main target market in CPH.

The main O&D markets for EK worldwide are to LHR, India, Pakistan, MNL, CGK, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh.

Flights to cities like PER, AKL, CHC, BNE, CDG, FRA, MUC, DUS heavily rely on 6th freedom traffic volumes as the O&D demand between DXB and them is very little.

In CPH, EK will aggressively promote their good connections to East Africa, Indian subcontinent, Australia and the Far East from CPH via DXB. SAS already makes a US $ 13 million loss on its nonstop CPH-BKK route...well this is bound to get bigger once EK enters this market segment.

EK will also hurt PIA a lot on its 2 weekly CPH flights from PAK as it has a better frequency, its CPH schedule reveals that there is only a 3 hour transit both ways enroute from CPH to ISB/LHE via DXB. PIA is a popular airline for Pakistanis in CPH to fly back to their homeland as its the most convenient option but its also THE MOST EXPENSIVE OPTION !!! And everyone knows that EK can kill a lot of airlines in the so called "long haul fare wars"  Wink

Maybe I should make a stopover next time flying CPH-BKK. And give them a try. At their homepage I also think they have some deals for stopovers, seems interesting and good priced.

The route has been confirmed by Copenhagen Airport - www.cph.dk. Initially 4 weekly flights from October 1st (Tue, Wed, Thu, Sat) and then daily from October 29th. No idea why they are to operate for 29 days before going daily but maybe they are short of aircraft....

My guess is that Copenhagen is the first step of EK's plans for Scandanavia....other cities will follow in time.

Consider the following:

1. EK has a huge number of aircraft on order, they will be expanding worldwide, including the Scandic countries. And, destinations such as CPN and ARN are key in the EK business plan.....limited service from those cities to the Gulf region and not a huge amount of competition on routes to Asia, Africa and Australia. EK can get pax from their home cities to numerous cities in Asia, Africa and Australia/NZ with one easy stop in Dubai - and throw in a Dubai stopover if the pax is interested.

2. EK's goal is not to be Dubai's airline, but instead to be the World's Airline....connecting major cities world wide via an effecient user-friendly centrally located hub........will their plan succeed? It seems to be off to a reasonable start and it will be interesting to watch; SQ became a huge airline based upon a similar business plan, EK could be next.

Another blow to SAS long haul operations out of CPH. Read again today in the media that long haul operations are marginally profitable, and likely to close down within the next 5 - 10 years. Their CEO maintained it as unlikely that long haul aircraft will be replaced at all.

Good to see EK enter the Scandinavian market. Hope to see them venture up north, and if nothing else, serve ARN soon as well.

Yes, well your right. I don't see SK with a long haul operation in 5 years as they are doing today. Unless they do something drastic to change. A whole new rethink of the airline. Quit the old mombo-jombo. New destinations, new CEO!!!

Oh my God, the CEO have been the best to SAS on their troubles.. Dont forget he was hired to expand, When he looked into the figures, he told a lot was hided from him. In fact he says, he would maybe not have taken the job, if he knew what a mess SAS was in before he was on the top of the system. He has infact done a good work,.

Well this is exciting news as Ive been wanting to add EK to my "collection" and will be spending more time in Scandinavia soon. Does this mean we can fly out of CPH to those little islands in the Indian Ocean via DXB? This opens up all sorts of possibilities for destinations on "the other side" of the world.

BTW its early and im feeling math impaired...... what is the total flight time to DXB?

For sure it will harm SK, SQ and generally Star Alliance in CPH.

Let's wait and see EK's fare policy. But I'm pretty sure they'll slash some fares like on the popular CPH-BKK.

Moreover, I'm sure PK will also suffer from EK's new presence in the Scandinavian hub.

What is old are all the pre-monopoly agreements with unions. And that is the reason why SK is doing so bad.

If Lindegaard had been such a hit for the airline, SK would be in the state that it is today. He may very well have been headhunted to expand the airline, but he has no idea of how to rescue it.
And I do think that Mr. Lindegaard is a good CEO, just not for SK in its current state. He isn't firm/hard enough to make ONE cut into the airline. He dwelled for to long. The motivation within the F/A and other employees is very, very low, which isn't good.

I am afraid this guy is running out of options to strike strategic deals with the unions. It is a shame that all of the energy of SAS is focused on these union relationships while foreign carriers are walking all over SAS to successfully capture their home-turf market share while SAS is focused just on this. And they are winning at this too.

I travel a lot to Scandinavia. Glad to see a carrier like Continental being pretty established by today. However, I would rather fly with SAS than anyone else. I have enjoyed them in the past and I enjoy them today. It is a true pity to think that their long haul flights will be gone alltogether within the next 5 years.

Huh?!! That may apply to BKK, but give me the names of the tour operators who book Finnish customers for the flights to NRT, KIX, SIN, CAN and HKG?

There are a lot of Finnish companies in these cities (as well as in PEK and PVG) flying their employees in both Biz and coach between Helsinki and Asia; Finland-based tour operator customers on those routes are quite limited.

What type of own EK staff, and how many, will be needed for their new operations at CPH?
I assume they will use a handling agent for check-in, boarding etc.
Does EK only use their own web for applications?
