More 717 Orders Coming,New Variants Being Launched

Fri May 26, 2000 6:32 am

Boeing Co., the world's biggest aircraft maker, is in advanced talks with at least four more airlines interested in the 717-200, the company's smallest jetliner, a program executive said. Three of the airlines are in Asia and one is in the U.S., he said,

The orders right now between the 4 airlines are near 200.

Operators of the 717 include AirTran Holdings Inc., Trans World Airlines Inc. and Greece's Olympic Airways.

Airlines have placed 146 firm orders and 149 options for the 717, an updated McDonnell Douglas DC-9 that Boeing inherited in the 1997 purchase of its rival. The plane is built in Long Beach, California, where about 2,000 people work on the program.

Sellge said Seattle-based Boeing hasn't decided whether to build a smaller version of the 717, partly because airlines want steeper price discounts than the company says it can afford.

Boeing began wind-tunnel tests this week of two potential smaller versions, an 86-seater called the 717-100X and a 70- to 75- seater dubbed the ``100X light.'' They would be closer in size to 70- and 90-seat airliners by rivals such as Montreal-based Bombardier Inc. and Brazil's Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA, or Embraer.

Boeing will share the test results with airlines during the next three months in informal workshops, Sellge said, describing it as a routine effort that doesn't guarantee the new versions will be developed.

DeltaAir, could you please post the source of all this info at the end of your posting, I have noticed you usually grab info from different places and mix it together into your own "release". Thanks.

Please post the URL. Any plans mentioned about a longer -300 model? It would be good as a short-haul 130 seater.
