Commercial Flights Shorter Than 10 Minutes?

Sat Dec 31, 2005 12:00 am

We have concluded Westray-Papa Westray flight is the shortest commercial flight...
Yesterday I found out that this flights in Costa Rica only last for a minute according to Sansa website . Its between Golfito and Coto47....

here is the timetable.

Which other commercial flights are less than 10 minutes ??
regards

BM

Hey,

I am pretty sure last year with Air Scotland, they flew GLA-EDI and EDI-GLA then continued on to destiantions in Europe.

But i think PAX were carried on some of these flights that couldn't have been any longer than 10 mins if the wind was heading in the correct direction.

Thanks

Selfoss - 20 min
Reykjavik - 30 min

Theres a great photo around of a commercial island hopping service (I think in the UK somewhere) where two of the airports are within spitting distance of each other, literally, just across a channel. The whole flight is something like 3 minutes and is little more than a hop from the end of one runway to the beginning of the other.

Are we talking about scheduled block time, or actual off/on time here?

You mean it ought not to take too long. Because of the realities of ATC, the schedule time is thirty minutes for the 31nm flight. If you were AirForce One, you could probably do it in less.  Smile

I believe the world's shortest flight is in the Shetland Islands (Scotland) linking the islands of Westray and Papa Westray.

AA has a 757 flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands which is 68 miles away. When the winds are right and no air traffic ahead, the flight has been between 10-12 min.

DL also used to service the Austin - San Antonio route with a 737 and was a short 10 min flight as well.

Not sure if it's one of the shortest, but we have here in Brasil several JPA-REC flights everyday, by RG, JJ and G3. Flown with 737s and 320s. It's very short (58nm), and add to that the fact that REC's runway 18, which is used most of the time, draws almost a straight line to JPA.

I never flown that route, but should be 10 min or less in the air.

Happy 2006 to all
REC,AMS and a few others...

AC flies YVR-YCD with a DHC-8 which can take anywhere from 8-10 minutes.
DL flies CVG-SDF with CRJ and 732s and can be around 10 minutes depending on runway usage.

The fare for the above mentioned flight from Golfito (OLF) to Coto 47 (OTR) works out to be USD 5.00 if you try to book it on Sansa's website! No airport taxes are added. Great stuff!

Slightly off topic....
Swissair and Crossair used to have multiple daily flights on the ZRH-BSL v.v. route, with published block times of as low as 25 min. Nowadays there's just one daily flight in each direction with a published block time of 30 min. Supposedly, the quickest flight ever took 11 min flight time, according to what one pilot boasted to us ground staff.... I think there was some sort of competition going on among pilots about who was fastest!

Aircraft types used regularly (there were others in earlier days...):
Swissair: Caravelle, DC-9, MD-80, Fokker 100, Airbus 319/320, Airbus 310, Airbus 330-200 (both widebodies as a weekly extension of the shortlived Swissair BSL-EWR flight).
Crossair: Metroliner, Saab 340 (very often with payload/volume problems on the A-models due to lots of long haul connecting baggage!), Fokker 50, Saab 2000, Embraer 145, Avro 85/100, MD-80.
Balair (for Swissair): MD-80.
BalairCTA (for Swissair): MD-80, MD-87.
CTA (for Swissair): MD-87.

I used to be a F/A for Business Express/Delta Connection (BEX). They had some pretty short routes during their time. When I was there, BOS-MHT was a high frequency route. Flying time was a good 10 minutes. It's only 54 miles between BOS and MHT, yet they manged to pack a Saab 340 on each flight. ACK-MVY was pretty short too.....10-13 minutes.... but that service was only during the summer months.
I used all of my sick days, so now I'm calling in dead.

On XJ's (9W may still do this route as well) DTW-TOL leg; one's only in the air for about 10 to 12 minutes. More time is spent taxiing at DTW than actual air time.

PHLBOS..you have the same thing DTW-FNT...taxi the 22R or 21'L in about 18 minutes and fly to FNT 13 to 15 minutes....its a slower trip back to DTW because of spacing by ATC for the flow to the runway. This quickest I did a wheels up to touchdown FNT-DTW was 16 minutes to 22R..longest 22minutes to 4L

SWS-CWL - Air Wales used to fly this on their SWS-CWL-LCY routing (though they overflew if no pax were embarking/disembarking at CWL)
PNQ (Pune) - BOM (Mumbai) - I have completed this sector in 14 mins.

UA definitely flew scheduled from San Francisco to Oakland using 727s.

My favourite short flight was when BA wanted to promote it's Super Shuttle (MAN, GLA, EDI, BFS, maybe NCL don't remember) and the Concorde. Hmm. Ooh, I know, let's tell Shuttle customers that we'll randomly schedule a Concorde onto the odd Shuttle flight! So once a week or so (don't know how often), you'd turn up for your commute to Belfast or Edinburgh or wherever, and there's G-BOAC at the gate. Don't know how many times they did it, the promotion ran for a few months.

Colgan Air (as US Express) flies some short routes:

HYA-ACK Beech 1900 20 minutes
BLF-BKW Beech 1900 20 minutes
RKD-BHB Beech 1900 20 minutes
RKD-AUG Beech 1900 20 minutes
BFD-JHW Saab 340 20 minutes

There's also the UA LAX area shuttles:

LAX-SNA EMB-120 30 minutes
ONT-LAX EMB-120 28 minutes
LAX-SAN EMB-120, CRJ-200 37 minutes (Not that short, but with 29 daily R/Ts!)

In the past, UA has operated ORD-CMX, ORD-RFD, and GRR-LAN (to my knowledge), which are quite short as well.

AC has some short ones on Jazz:

YVR-YYJ A319, Dash-8-300 27 minutes
YVR-YCD Dash-8-100/300 28 minutes

Skyway (as Midwest Connect) flies some short routes:

MKE-MBL Beech 1900 35 minutes
RHI-IWD Beech 1900 30 minutes
ESC-IMT Beech 1900 27 minutes
MQT-IMT Beech 1900 25 minutes
MKE-MSN Beech 1900, FRJ 35 minutes (they used to run this one with a 717 thrown in during the day)

AS flies short routes in Alaska as well:

WRG-KTN 737-700 30 minutes
PSG-WRG 737-700 22 minutes
JNU-GST 737-400 32 minutes

Keep in mind the times here are block times, so wheels-up-to-touchdown time is going to be shorter.

Don't forget Hawai'i interisland routes flown by AQ and HA.

For a combination of shortness and capacity they are impressive.

HNL-OGG: 17 mins (in the air)
HNL-LIH: 15 mins (in the air)
HNL-ITO: 30 mins (in the air)
HNL-KOA: 25 mins (in the air)

Back when HA still flew to LNY and MKK I did (Twice!!) LNY-MKK....it was scheduled at 8 mins, took no more than 5 in the air!!

As the "10-minute limit" seems to be lifted, here´s my shortest (in minutes) scheduled flight that I actually have timed (I didn´t time my LAX-SNA flights).

OS 0211 SZG - LNZ: 54 nm
Scheduled with 30 minutes
on 06-NOV-2005 we were airborne for 14 min 32 sec using a CRJ100/200.

CO Express used to fly IAH-EFD, which I believe was blocked as 20 or so -- but was probably less (Houston-Ellington Field TX). Distance? 28 miles
Also, I believe US flies RUT-LEB as a continuation of another flight, which is 33 miles. Can't imagine either takes more than 10-15 minutes.

To afford the inhabitants of and visitors to Papa Westray and Westray a flight to and from mainland Scotland and an interchange to flights elsewhere in the UK and beyond while not wasting money by operating seperate services to two islands so close to each other. Very sensible if you ask me.

I spent some time in STT this summer, and looked into flying to San Juan on AA. All the schedules I have seen have displayed an ATR between the islands, and I was told they only fly the 75's on 'specialty' flights-few and far between.

Quoting FoxDelta (Reply 16):
Didn't Continental fly between both Houston airports with DC9s

Sad to say but Continental doesn't fly the DC9 anymore, and they do not have service between the two Houston airports, as with all the ATC it would take much too long.

RE: Commercial Flights Shorter Than 10 Minutes?

I don't remember any that are actually less than ten minutes, but Republic Airlines used to have scheduled mainline jet service between New Orleans and Baton Rouge (about 15 minutes) and New Orleans and Gulfport, MS (about 20 minutes). This was in the early 80's.
Tired of airline bankruptcies....EA/PA/TW and finally DL.

The Winair flights between St Maarten and St Barts and St Maarten and Saba are below 10 minutes flight time.
