Are Eastern Airways About To Get 146's?

Sun Jan 01, 2006 4:06 am

News on another forum is that T3 are about to acquire one or more 146's. Has anyone heard any more about this? Can anyone confirm if it is true?

If so, which routes are they planned for? I don't think any of their current routes have the demand for the 146, so are BACX poised to drop more routes with T3 picking up the pieces, like when BACX cut many routes and withdrew the J41's a couple of years back? IOM services would maybe fit the picture, but that's just a guess.

Any info welcome.

VLM - 146's????
I don't see the need for them on ANY of VLM's network?

Eastern are looking for many different aircraft:

the J31 have served them well and have a good network and are profitable
the J41 have allowed good yeild J31 routes to be upgraded
the EMB135...I think they have all gone back to lessor
the Saab2000...I think these are the way forward..

They have started alot of routes with J31's upgraded to the J41 and J41 routes have been upgraded to Saab's if they are needed.

Eatsern's way forward will probably be the Saab.

The 2000 will grow to about 7 or 8 thin 2006.
I think the J's will be phased out for either Saab 340 or EMB135.

but 146's....neithe T3 or VG would fill one enough to warrent it...maybe the ocassion lease for special events extra capacity..but not full time.

It would suprise me, the 146 doesn't seem to fit into their business model! It would imply a move into more high capacity routes, but without going into competition with other airlines then I can't see that happening.

It would also possibly mean Eastern having to offer lower fares if they were to introduce the 146 and compete on routes already served by other carriers!

I praise the service and the niche regional routes which Eastern operate, however, one could never accuse them of being a low-fares airline Big grin

Hi, my mum is cabin crew for T3 at MME and they are getting rid of the J31's and J32'S in favour of J41's and 2000's. There hasnt been any news on 146's. I doubt they will acquire any because they pride themselves on their buisiness class like service and a 146 would be too large to do this on such short flights if you know what i mean  Smile btw they are starting MME-brussels with the J41 soon apparantly. cheers

Its because they are a niche carrier, that they are able to charge higher fares, and consequently afford a cabin service. Once again, basic economics.

On a side note... does anyone happen to know how Eastern have been doing on the MAN-STN route since Air Berlin started this service last month? Perhaps it's a bit early to tell yet.

No No No - the Saab 2000 are such unreliable aircraft

EMB135 is a dog of an aircraft also - way too high a CASM for what Eastern needs. They need to stay a low cost / high fare airline to ensure profits.

Eastern are advertising for Saab 2000 Technical Fleet Manager, based at Humberside, and B1/B2 Certified Engineers (for various locations throughout the UK) so it looks as though the Saab 2000 has it  Smile

I believe that the INV-MAN-INV service is to be upgraded to a S2000 sometime in february. I think that these a/c are they way forward for them. I think the 146s would be a bit too much for them in terms of capacity, unless they are going to open up new routes? Perhaps they could have a go at replacing some of the dropped BACX routes from MAN if they did get them?

T3 are a really nice airlines, i enjoyed my ride with them NWI-MAN a couple of years ago, and believe it or not, they were cheaper than the train! (also 5 hours quicker than the train!) T3 should stick to what they have been doing for years, operating niche routes where the demand is only small.

What about routes like Wick. Could Wick support a Jetstream 41?

Hope they may start a HUY-BRU flight, or indeed a new flight from HUY to anywhere. BRS and SOU would also be good choices

The T3 NWI service is sometime upgraded to S2000's, they always seem to really late, so as people have said previously maybe a bit unreliable.
We had 146's for a few days last summer on the MAN-STN flights, leased from Flightline, due to some J41's being out of service, the loads were quite low, but it was only a leasing argeement.

Where are these potential 146's coming from?

What's happening to BACXs? Are they going to LX still?

Nothing to do with the aircraft's reliability, if this happens then the aircraft are covering for tech J41s but they have to do a run to and from either EDI or ABZ from NWI before they can fly to MAN, hence the delay. Unlike many other carriers, we don't just cancel flights when there is a problem.

Very interesting speculation about our fleet plans. The Saab is here to stay, and is very popular with our clients (particularly in the charter market), as for 146s or other bigger beasts, I'm not aware of any plans at present.

BACX are not getting rid of any 146's. They are passing 6 RJ100's on to LX however, the first having been handed over last month. The next is soon I believe. Registrations being G-CFAB - CFAH. 'H was first, 'B is next.

As to T3 getting 146/RJ's, that is purely pie in the sky at this time. SAAB 2000 and J.41 are the flavour of the month, and I believe they are looking to acquire some of the ex-LX ones. Not sure about that though.

The SAAB suits their business plan and as far as I can tell, they aren't having too much trouble with it. My wife may be able to find out a little more when she is seconded to LCY in February to support the T3 operation there.

I believe Mr Lake did come over to the Island to have a chat with Euromanx which may have been something to do with 3W's RJ70's. However, nothing came of that or the Nigerian gentleman who also came across - so far anyway.

If I find any more confirmed gen I'll post it.
